Well explained dafarm and I have no issues if this is "market rate" certainly can't confirm or deny that fact myself. I was simply replying to an earlier post from an apparent member of Monash who suggested that baseball was simply a social sport at Monash Uni and just never heard of a social organisation paying out so much money. On the issue of pitchers, isn't this a problem that a lot of clubs face? Does this mean an A grade club who loses their number one pitcher should ask politely to play B grade because "they don't have adequate pitching". I suppose you nailed it though, you yourselves don't think you're strong enough (great confidence for your MVP and the rest of the members, has anyone told them and the coach they're not good enough). I think others just see this as a lame excuse not to face up to A grade baseball

On the issue of pitchers, isn't this a problem that a lot of clubs face? Yeah I guess so. And it will be more so now with the extended summer. The MVP said it herself, she doesn't want to play A-grade. That's her perogative. But let's take that aside, she's a national rep and I don't want to focus on her. The coach, pres, chairmain of selectors and I have been around baseball long (and I've been around and know everyone at monash well enough) enough to make an honest and realistic assessment of where we are at (B1/A2 level) - all good clubs should do this - and I daresay that is our job. I don't shirk away from that one bit. As a club the issue is discussed openly from time to time. Bruhaha, I would re-iterate that we haven't made a final decision, and we are still trying to recruit and planning for all possibilities. We're having our AGM soon, and we will no doubt be having a players meeting to suss things out further.

Fair enough dafarm, it just seems that Monash are being a little selfish in wanting to bask in their success while only playing B grade. All clubs should be wanting to better their successes. I mean look at A grade, Cheltenham has been dominate forever it seems but yet the other clubs in A grade front up every year pushing hard to knock them off their mantle. You don't see the rest of A grade saying "oh well, we're not quite good enough". If this was the case, we wouldn't have an A grade at all. I hope a final decision is made that best represents what is good for baseball and wish Monash all the best in making the right decision not only for themselves also for the DBA and the baseball community.

No worries bruhaha. We're not saying "never to A-grade ever again"!
should add that It's up to the DBA executive not just us to workout a decision. We've been very upfront with Wearney about what we perceive the situation to be (i spoke to him 2 weeks after our season ended, cos I knew this was gonna come up at some stage).

I'm pretty sure you're referring to 6for8's comments earlier in the piece. I can assure you that he isn't a member of Monash, instead a yound man with a brilliant baseball brain and a good understanding of how the university systems work.

I am probably sounding like a broken record, but I have heard from an exceptionally impecable source that Andy t will be presented as head coach tonight at Knox. Can't divulge the source but let's just say it is credible.

I am probably sounding like a broken record, but I have heard from an exceptionally impecable source that Andy t will be presented as head coach tonight at Knox. Can't divulge the source but let's just say it is credible. That would be an interesting decision from Knox. Andy played at Heathmont last season, therefore he would require a clearance to coach or play at another club. I am pretty sure (as per By-Law 12) that no clearance requests can be submitted in the MWBL prior to March 1st? If this is the case, and Knox announce AT as coach tonight, they would be announcing a Heathmont player as club coach, which is in direct conflict with By-Law 26, "No person shall be appointed Manager or Coach of any team or Club in the association without first having been registered as a player of that Club". This announcement potentially would then be an act predudicial to any subsequent clearance request. I couldn't see knox getting themsleves into this situation, I'm pretty sure the league would be forced to come down particularly hard on a club that flagrantly violated the by-laws. So I predict this rumor to be false! No announcement will be made tonight.

Two quick points - to dafarm, MWBL have had a junior participation rule for 5 or so years now, for A Grade finals. This year they brought in a 1 team rule (or combined team) for B Grade. Melb Uni have not suffered over the past 5 years and infact, sent players to the DV junior finals to umpire last season as a way of 'getting involved' with juniors in winter. My understanding is the MWBL understand the situation with Melb Uni and Latrobe Uni and have suggested other ways to be involved.
As for the AT to Knox (and probably DT), seeing as last season and the season prior, Knox played hardball with a few clubs in relation to clearances on the basis that no letters were sent prior to a clearance being produced, actually refusing to even acknowledge the clearance, I would find it staggering if they announced or introduced these guys as coaches.....even if the supposed clause of 'pending clearances' is in the letter - kind of middle finger in the air to all the other clubs and the league.....

ringwood losing players this winter. names mentioned: ayres, smoke, taylor, bright (overseas) chessman, jones (college) pickles appointed club coach.
joker, you seem to have a real grudge against knox. did you not get an invite to the Hat? Correct me if im wrong, did i read on here a club (watsonia?) appoint a coach recently for winter, the new coach is coming across from westgarth? So does this rule re 1/3 and the by laws apply in that case cause i havent seen a ripple in the water about that one. im sure i saw something about that but i cant be f' ed going back through to read this.
I believe andy being the person he is, has openly discussed his intentions with heathmont and they understand he wants to go back to a club where his baseball life started and help with re building. wished him luck and verbally agreed to clear him.

I have a grudge against most clubs, not just Knox ;D If Westgarth have done same, then apply my comments and questions x 2. I wonder if Ringwood's player exodus you refer to was brought on by their 'B Grade Experiment'? I've heard rumors that Waverley's Div 2 experiment may have been less successful this year too? Perhaps a warning for other clubs considering the same?

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel FranktheFalcons post with the sour grapes, a new member who is openly promoting Knox BC, who demoted themselves last year from A grade because of a lack of playing talent...both through departures and players wanting a break, and now promoting a coach or coaches who aren't cleared and appears to be quite arrogant and condescending about this fact... is a little wrong?? 12 months is a loooonnnngggg time in winter baseball....

No need to apologise, I was just clearing it up for everyone.
Whilst I have been responsible for denying a player a clerance once, I will vow to never do it again.
Honestly, if a player wants to leave, for whatever reason, then he or she should be allowed.
I know the by-laws are in place to protect clubs, but honestly, if you're waiting for a LOI before you talk to players about whether or not they're coming back the next year, I'm tipping it's too late.
If the geat Andyt is going to Knox, good on him. I am sure the Penguins will be just fine without him.

I believe from very good sources that the Monash coach got paid significant money for a team playing B grade and for a guy that has never coached a senior game in his life before last year season. I wrote the cheque. What is significant in your eyes?

a lot to comment on here - will stick to what is 'sensible' for me to comment on....
i would suggest that it may be slightly premature to be announcing a head coach who is still conected to another club - surely it would not make too much difference to say to club members that you 'are in talks with' someone and are just awaiting all of the 'legalities' to be dealt with before making a formal announcement? not to say that we all dont seem to know what is going on anyway, just a bit of courtesy to other clubs in the competition and the league itself....
and on ringwood in b grade, i may be wrong but if they had a grade players in with some genuine thirds players and juniors who are developing themselves wouldnt it make sense to suggest that the a graders might be stepping back in order to help advance the development of those juniors? isnt that the goal of all clubs - in order to maintain some kind of strength through the years?...

I believe from very good sources that the Monash coach got paid significant money for a team playing B grade and for a guy that has never coached a senior game in his life before last year season. I will strongly argue that it's far more work coaching a Uni club because there are so many never-played-baseball-before players each year. At Melb. Uni. there must be, oh, 20-40 new first years at the start of each year. Some local but many from overseas, to add in a language barrier for extra fun. About ?half? hang around for the season; only a dozen actually [learn to] play half decently. Most of them have never played baseball ever before and many have little idea about ball sports and even fewer skills. (Although they make up for that with impressive enthusiasm and stick-at-it-ness, even when they are unable to get much game time.) It's an amazing effort that the club coach can give those new players the time and attention they deserve, while simultaneously giving the A grade players the workout they require. Not to mention at the same time providing the women's team with an environment that gives them the chance to train and play in a way that is integrated with the rest of the club.
Coaching a standard winter club must be a doddle in comparison.
"Significant dollars"? If so, then they are being well earned, I'll bet.

hahaha seriously your a flog... try coaching kids who can't keep their attention for more than 5 minutes, or can't understand the most basic of rules or a kid who's autistic. The ppl that coach kids don't generally get paid, they do it for the love of the game, the love of the club, for the love of their own kid in some instances. From what I heard last winter season one MWBL uni club was offering 26k to a prospective coach, but the majority was being paid to players. I'm glad I'm in the DBA where only one club buys premierships...

I've been following this debate about Uni clubs and I just want to make a couple of points
1. development of the sport isn't just about a junior program. At La Trobe, which I assume would be the same at the other uni clubs, our main recruitment stream is new students most of which have never played the game. Is this not development of our sport? Introducing new people to the game of baseball?
2. having coached and been a committee member at La Trobe, and having spent time on the committee at another club i can assure everyone out there are as many challenges running a university club as there are in an independent club. it makes it almost impossible to get a junior program off the ground when the university you represent will not support it. We have also spoken about a junior program at La Trobe and its not something that's possible in the short term at least
3. and finally, pakkyp, $26k for a coach? I find this hard to believe unless they (defiantly not La Trobe) were looking to sign a coach for 26 years.....
Our club has to work for the support provided by the university, and i would assume the other uni clubs are in a similar situation. If anyone wants to discuss this further I'm happy to
