it would have to be like mikes top 50. a "pre-season" team based on expectations for the coming season. Good idea, would be a great debate too. bit hard to compare stats mainly for guys whom are being relegated/promoted as they will invariably fluctuate but great talking point.

... I think a Div 1 all star team v a Div 2 all star team would be a great tussle. In all fairness I Cant really see it being a close game. Yes there is some talented players in Div 2 but the vast vast majority are in div 1. Thats why the clubs are in divy 1 because they have more good players than the teams in divy 2.

gotta feel sorry for division 3 clubs and players. Division 1 and 2 blokes constantly tell them they don't care for it. Then guys start a thread to talk about division 3 and a page in it is all about division 1 and 2 players and clubs and issues.

reality is Div 3 will not be around post 2009. There will be 2 divisions, 12 in each. The clubs in Div 3 that dont have the ability to be promoted due to Junior programs will be folded into other clubs.
However, Preston (previously a very successful club) has a good junior program with some very good young talent. Stu Medland now as head coach should propel these guys into a 1 or 2 finish, putting them straight into Div 2 next year. He has done the same at Watsonia in winter with their very young seconds team.

To get Preston back into Div 2 next year would be an excellent coaching effort. The club seems to have the right culture, they are always striving to get up a division.
As for non-competitive clubs being folded into others, while this might in many ways be good for the sport, there's a lot of people who would be set against the idea.

interesting post wildcat09. Is that based on actual data or on wild speculation?
I can't imagine clubs like Springvale and Williamstown being too happy about being "folded in to other clubs"?

maybe the case, but if you have no junior program and are happy to just play one or two senior teams in Div 3, you are better off just playing in the masters.

Agreed, but these clubs have been around a long time and are financially stable. Not sure if they would agree with you.
Back to my original questions though. You say this will all happen post 2009. Not far off. What are you basing this on?

Have to admit though there are clubs in Div 3 that would benefit from a merger. Say this was the case than said clubs would have to be absorbed by their closest Div 1 club in my opinion.
Footscray into Newport or St.Kilda into Sandy.
Again is their anything to substantiate the Merger theory?

12 teams in Div 1??? 10 is already too many, the bottom 2 teams for the last 4 years I have played have not been competitive.
I will say however that its even worse in Sydney having played Div 1 up there - the bottom 4 are uncompetitive.

Those teams that are being classified as non-competitive are 'young teams' in 2 years time they will be kicking both of our teams off the park.
Chelt & Melb's teams had predominantely juniors in them. We get old but they mature. Agree though 12 is too many. Sandy should just go back down.
As for Div 2 & 3, there are only 8 teams in Div 2. Surely that can be increased and eliminate the need for Div 3.

So it could be ten teams in div 1, ten in div 2 and the remaining six div 3 teams get absorbed in to other clubs? Sounds interesting.
So the vote got up? Why is there no mention of this on the VBA website or anywhere else for that matter? Seems like pretty big news to me.

The competition structure was brought up, 12 teams in each of Div 1 & 2. Leaves 2 in Div 3, we can all play the crystal ball game and guess who is left behind.
The vote was in favor but it was decided no action to happen this year.

That's pretty interesting. So bottom two teams this year would stay up and be joined by top two div 2 clubs and same with div 2/3?
Could be interesting to see what kind of impact a club can have if being allowed to do two years in the higher division instead of just one before relegation.

I think that structure would be a good initiative. It would deffinitley benefit the fringe dwelling sides. Teams that have the skills but not the juniors. On the other hand it will expose the bottom sides, but who knows perhaps formalising this proposed format would be enough for all clubs to really have a look at where they're at and almost force some sort of development.
It may also raise the question as to whether the competition can sustain as many clubs as it does? I suspect that for some clubs who have watched their junior programs dwindle over the last few years, time maybe running out.

Predictions:
Springvale: Defensively are the best team in the division and have the bats to accompany.
Williamstown: Scored 100 more runs than any other club in the division last year, they bat all the way to 9 and Green, Camov, Simpson & Lester all get the job done on the hill.
Preston: Will be lead by Pendulbury, contributes with bat & ball. New coach will have them up and focused.
Port Melb: Will need to replace Clester's 20+ RBI's & 50+ Inns pitched. Still have the stocks to manufacture plenty of runs. New Coach will be looking for results early.
St.Kilda: Keiper will lead with the stick & ball as usuall, Mills to contribute from the hill. Well balanced defence with at times explosive offence.
Berwick: Will continue to improve. Quinn & Fahy are the nucleus. Always hard to toss on their home ground. Going to be hunting for a finals campaign.
Chelsea: Well lead by Johanssen's bat. Will need to have recruited a pitcher over winter to contemplate a finals birth. Solid defence.
Footscray: Going to struggle. Looking for improvement from it's youth. New coach Curnow will have a tough job this year.

I have spoken to him once or twice. Mace's arm seemed alright on sunday morning, found the middle of my bat a heap of times. Didn't enjoy the infielding though it was very painful indeed!
