The designated pitcher rule allows a player from the firsts to pitch (only, no hitting) in the seconds, and then play from the start of the game in the firsts.
i.e. We have player x, he is learning to pitch, but is an important positional player in our firsts. We want him to get some pitching done in the 2's, so we start him pitching, he has a DH attached, and then when he's finished pitching, he comes out of the game. For the firsts game, he plays in his usual spot...
Only thing I don't understand is why there is an age restriction on it?

Only thing I don't understand is why there is an age restriction on it? The idea is that the DP is used as a development tool, not a tool to allow clubs to have your RF throw in the 2's. Obviously, BV have decided that anyone older that whatever the age is should have had plenty of time to develop already. If clubs are intent on developing players to pitch, they can always just play them as a pitcher and if their bat is so needed, have them re-enter. I think the DP rule there saves the poor bloke who just fills in for the first 2 innings of the 1sts game for the guy coming back in. That is my understanding of the age restrictions and why the rule is there in the first place.

I haven't checked the relevant BV rule here, but the application seems to be somewhat different to the spirit of the rule that was introduced to Victorian baseball many years ago now.
From my recollection, the DP rule was designed to allow a "less than top line" pitcher under a certain age to throw in the seconds and then play the entire firsts game if required. The age limit might have been 25, could now be 30.
Under the DP rule, a promising young player could A. play two full games in the one day (potentially great for his development) and could B. get his pitching work in the twos while being able to play another position and to hit in the later game.
Of the DPs currently listed (on the Summer League website) for the new season, John Hussey, Greg Wiltshire, Kable Hogben and Blake Cunningham rate a mention!
Surely this is wrong, or at least misleading. They are among their club's leading pitchers. They cannot possibly qualify as DPs under earlier or any other reasonable criteria, given their proven record at the highest club levels.
Perhaps someone in the know can fill us in on just how the Designated Pitcher Rule is now applied.

clubs wishing to use the DP rule must nominate their top 2 pitchers who cannot be used as DP's.
My understanding was a DP must be under 30 but that may have changed

This years playing conditions: 34 a) ii) A club may use a player, (1) that is not one of the two nominated pitchers, (2) who is under thirty years of age at 1st October, and (3) is not a non-national, to be the starting pitcher, and only pitch, in the reserves game and then must start in the Firsts game on the same day in a position other than as the pitcher. This player is known as the Designated Pitcher (DP).

Perhaps they are the top-2 nominated pitchers for each club?

I think you're right, chilli. The listing simply is misleading.
The four I mentioned would likely be the top-two nominated for Blackburn and Cheltenham.
Who, then (if any) would be the nominated DPs for those two clubs?

Seems the rumor in the correct thread was true, and one of those listed has since been cleared from Blacky to Essendon.

KC, P26 - I think you're confusing the nominated pitchers with the designated pitchers. The two nominated pitchers, or a non-national can't DP. Anyone else can be a DP as long as they are under 30. Clear ... as mud?

You're right fm2, there was some earlier confusion over the wording in the Summer League "Player Requests" page.
That has been sorted to show that the Nominated Pitchers are the ones named.
At least one interesting one in there, though. Sunshine lists Shaun Moore and Chad Galloway as the Nominated Pitchers, meaning that Rory Meddick (under 30) can be used as the DP.

To nominate is one thing. To have them officially ratified is another.

Seems that Women’s baseball is not that important at one club, with it withdrawing it women’s team but asking the women to fill in to one of the lower grade men’s teams.

I hear that Markus Solbach is back to play for the Rebels this year. Good luck to everyone's seconds for the rest of the season.

Cannot confirm or deny that! All I can say is that Dan has had a great start, and doesn't look like injuring his knee, and going home early. But if markus does return, I'm sure he'll be happy to play anywhere he can get a game. On another subject, the rebels are looking for a catcher to play the early game, and can handle a guy throwing low 90's?

Just looking at the stats page for Div 1 and it seems our import has been hard at work throwing 826 innings this year. Not bad, means he has a 0.05 ERA and has substantially brought down our team ERA! Perhaps the 8 is the typo and it should read 26? LOL
