Looks like the weather gods still dislike us.
Whilst Thursday looks reasonable, they are predicting unsettled weather for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

"Always with the negative waves Moriarty, always with the negative waves."
(sorry, Kelly's Heroes is a favourite of mine)
We're going to get four games in, and I'm backing the Aces to win each game of the series.

Need to keep McOwen and Latimore quiet. Remember that SA were the finalists with Vic last year, and swept the ACES over there to open this season. They have some dangerous hitters and a solid staff, should be a great series.

Anyone know what the Pitching rotation is likely to be ? - Or does Phil like to keep this a bit close to his chest ?
There are a couple of starters I havent seen yet and would like to so as to work out which day(s)/game(s) to go to.

Reflecting on our season to date.
Is having the Japanese connection good or bad.
On the Pro side : We have been well served by Japanese players that we have had. Kamei, was a standout gun. Also, the remaining Japanese players all made major contributions during their time here.
On the Con side : They were only here for the first half of the home and away part of the season due to restrictions by the Japanese League as to their participation.
The Aces and the Bandits are the ones who have been hit hard by this restriction.
Is this an alliance that will continue ?
Should the Aces in future times look more to the US as to recruitment ?
I open it up for your thoughts.

Probably something like Wiltshire > Blackley > Nishikawa (GO PIRATES!!) > ?Jamnik?. If his leg isn't better, do they go with D. Hendricks? Give Cunningham a shot? On the imports: Any time you increase the quality of baseball players playing in a league, the standard goes up, and seeing the best standard of baseball possible is a good thing. Even if they were only here for a time, some is better than none. In future, maybe a few more players from the USA/Canada mixed in with the Japanese. BRING BACK KAMEI!!!

My opinion, like yours Goblin, comes from the M2 members section.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Japanese input, though from a members view it was disappointing that it lasted just on 20 games. We saw some good pitchers (a couple of wayward ones too), but had some fun with Hashimoto in CF and leading off, Ijyuin roaming all around the place and hitting our first Grand Slam, and I firmly believe that in a decade's time we'll be talking about the Aces of the last ten years and saying all our imports were good, but that Kamei from the first year was the absolute best of the lot. (If he isn't and someone does better then I will be delighted, however Kamei was leading the triple crown when he left for home - can't do much better than that!)
Unfortunately, just as Kamei was becoming a bit of a cult hero, he's gone - right now, it would have been better for the crowds if they had stayed, but then again, we knew the rules before the start - they go home at Christmas. Still, from a member's perspective it takes time to get to know your imports and to have them wisked away just as you get to know them does suck a bit.
I am not sure of the players opinions, but I am sure they learned a fair bit from them and enjoyed playing with our Japense friends, albeit for a short time.
It will depend on how the season goes with our new crop of imports (Americans) as to how we go I would imagine, and I am sure that the Aces management and coaches will sit down and discuss this at the end of the year. We have added a couple of extra import arms from local clubs, but no bats (Beresford does come back this week though) were added (but gave the local lads a chance which I'm all for as well). Dare I say if Aces management would like to add a hitter or too next season post-Christmas then BV may be asked to look toward a two import rule?
With Trav Blackley gone, Peter Moylan reportedly not playing and with someone like Matthew Blackmore injured, our pitching stocks won't be as strong now, but I do think the pitchers on the roster can still get the job done and win the title.
Perhaps an alliance with an American organisation could come into play? The Japanese seemed to use this as an instructional league, perhaps an Aces-US alliance can do similar come Christmas each year?

Beresford, Russell and Hertzler come in to the Aces squad. McGrath (Under 18 Champs), Sheldon-Collins (Under 18 Champs) and Mascoll go out. A couple of players are being assessed for fitness, so there may be late change. www.baseballvictoria.com.au/default.asp?Page=72162Adelaide roster is posted on their ABL site.

Forecasted for drizzle over Sat/Sun. But like Stu, I would be shocked if we didn't get the four games logged before Sunday night. Aces management were aggressive with recouping the Cavs and Sox games, and with that approach surely there should be enough sunshine for 36 innings one way or another. Added advantage for the field is that weekend is tipped to be warm. The outcome of the Bite series may largely go down to infield defense. Latimore had a brilliant November, but looking at recent form over the Bite's past two series it is nothing to be afraid of. McOwen has contributed consistently but not by clearing the fence. I saw them play the Cavs in Adelaide over the weekend and as an Aces man was encouraged by high-volume pop-ups and not scoring until the 7th. One thing the Bite batters can do, though, is place. Oh man can they place. So if the Bite continue playing their base-running short game (which suits their home-ground) and the Aces continue to spank balls over the fence (which suits our home-ground) I'm happy with that. Glad to hear Wiltshire will open proceedings either Friday or Saturday.

I for one am happy to see Mascoll out, not sure why he was included and Beresford is a definite improvement.
My question is, are there any players who 'deserve' a shot? I think that with the problems we have had with the corneers and having to use Davies at both positions has made our line up weaker. I wouls have thought that the likes of Mack, Gourlay, Dingle or Ferguson (playing as well as Mascoll at the moment, probably better for that matter) from Chelt, Blewjas, Bertrand from Doncaster, T Dicker from Blackburn, Ayres from Upwey, George from Werribee, Knuth, Charles, Ryan from Geelong, Pollock or McIntyre from Essendon. Who goes out? Lawman has started to struggle, Tambaurino, Mascoll. What do we think?

Does anybody know which players are on the team for this weeks games against Adelaide? The stuff on the baseball victoria website seems to list some players who are in and out, but how would they know becuase it's not even on the Aces website? I hope the big man, Andy Russell is back because it sounds like they missed him last week, the little honey.
If anybody knows anything please put it up on the forum. Go Aces.

Karlsen - C Huber - 1B Wearne - 2B Davies - 3B Beresford - SS McDonald/Rutgers - LF Biddle - CF Russell - RF Knuth - DH
Pitching the same as now

Knuth crushed last year, and looks like he's doing the same this year.
We've already got a bunch of seppo's throwing, be good to see Knuth get a gig. Though I can't imagine Holmesy would be willing to give him up and lose him for club games!

You're a smart young fellow, Lando. Ah, the benefits of a college education.....
I reckon your lineup for Game One is just about spot on, although it might be Tambo as DH.

The Jack is more than capable of speaking for himself, BP, but I just wonder what you are saying.
Some or many or most of these players will almost certainly have been considered by the Aces organisation - especially since the Japanese players went home.
Dingle and Charles are already on the 40-man, McIntyre is a former star at Claxton Shield, while Gourlay and Blejwas are well-credentialled players at higher levels. Knuth has almost certainly been approached and the others mentioned have been terrific performers in State League baseball.

I'd say young Tom dicker is worth a shot at 3b also. Hitting around .400 in club ball and not too long out of a great couple years of college ball. Very underrated.

You know what they say Goblin - "The more you bet the more you win" * - (see disclaimer below).
No doubt the Blue Sox came in from $3 to $2.85 to win it all on the back of the Thompson and Oltjen additions from here on in, makes them very hard to beat you'd reckon.
Can still get $5 for our boys though and that pretty nice value !
I like the double tonight Blue Sox and Aces FWIW *- (see disclaimer below).
* = Disclaimer...Dont bet regularly , you cant win despite the fact that you think you will/can/might :-(

Aces a 5-1 shot in what is basically a 4 horse race.
With 8 home games and 4 on the road, Aces still good odds to finish 1 or 2.
I'm happy to lay some $$$ at those odds

Would be interesting to see how much they are holding on this Goblin.
Sportingbooks that offer baseball markets tend to work off the starting pitchers, especially for the majors (and goalies for US and European Ice Hockey as well). That they are not for the ABL games suggests:
a) they don't think starting pitchers make a difference in this league
b) they can't work out a formline
or
c) they aren't holding much on it anyway and haven't put the resources they put into markets such as AFL, NRL etc
My suggestion is c, but at the end of the day, that they are offering odds suggests there is interest somewhere and that the league is a viable entity.

Good thing about the two books is that they are clearly independant of each other. Usually in a small market situation, one Sportingbook will release a market and several will follow.
The odds for Perth vary so significantly that there has to be two books, which again means people are showing interest, which has to be good for the league, albeit in an indirect way.

Ferrett is solid, but James is a definite upgrade. Tambo must be in the sights, and Lawman has struggled with the bat and in the field. I would have thought maybe Booney, Sticks, and Edwards may all be suitable call ups too?
