rube, it is clearly a matter in the hands of the BV Tribunal.
Let's allow that process to take its course.

Rebels vs Newport 1sts postponed till after xmas, due to the inavailability(?) of half the rebels team on sat. No the change of date was good idea. Rescheduled game is a mid weeker at altona. Do I need to bring coffee that evening, and maybe a roll of $50 bills?

I understand Port Melbourne's thirds and Malvern's team in Division Two fourths have both notified BV that they will not be able to field sides this weekend.

It will be interesting to see how many sides will forfiet tomorrow. Perhaps with the lightening and thunder due tomorrow, followed by heavy rains, some or most games won't get started. Perhaps this Saturday could be the question and answer to whether BV could move to Saturday or stay predominately on Sunday. It is unfortunate that people who play cricket would be effected from playing on this saturday as tomorrow is the second day of a two day game. But it will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

I recall seeing on a Winter or Summer website a list of games (many as it turned out) that had been 'called' (for weather) a while back.
Perhaps BV can do the same for games 'called' due to lack of player numbers/forfeits with each Forfeit a shame for the 18+ players that wont play this week and an indictment on the original decision to switch days.
'Greater good' my Ar$e !

would be interesting to see if tomorrow does get rained out if the mulgrave v newport "make up" game at Altona still goes ahead? could have a major impact on the final standings if they get to play the round and everyone doesn't due to rain

Geelong has nine unavailable, but only four as a result of the game change... leaves us thin, but will cover four teams.
When determining to move the games to Saturday, the SLC considered the need to show support for the All-Star game by providing the opportunity for as many people with an interest in baseball as possible to attend the All-Star game.
I understand the concern over players missing games, and have been very outspoken about BV prioitising spectating over participating in the past. Players pay good money to participate and for them to miss is harmful to our clubs and our sport.
The SLC realised the decision would result in some players missing the chance to participate on Saturday, but a greater number of players would have the opportunity to spectate on Sunday. Considering the All-Star game is a one-off event, and the support provided by our State Government, we took the view it was worth the risk of some players missing games on the Saturday, if it meant we could maximise the attendance on Sunday.
While the number of players unavailable is highlighting the negative of the decision made by the SLC, the true test of the decision will come on Sunday at the All-Star game. If the game is well attended (subjective, but I'd state a good attendance would have to be greater than any home series game to date), the ABL, MLB and State Government show continued commitment to baseball in Victoria, it could be argued the decision was just.
Conversely, if the game is poorly attended, the SLC and BV must heed the message that our club members value their participation much more than they do the opportunity to spectate. Future decisions must be made with that in mind, including the Aces commitment to future events like the All-Star game.
I'm reserving my judgement on the decison the SLC made (of which I was a part of the process) until after the crowd is counted on Sunday.

I might be wrong but I thought the lowest side had to forfiet and the higher sides filled.

Not sure it is a rule but generally you would fill the higher sides first.

I'm perplexed that the Rebels and Rams were able to shift their 1sts game when the directive was that games were rescheduled to the Sat.
To add insult to the process, "allegedly" as reported above, there has now been a forfeit given in the 2s.
Yet the 3rds and 4ths are still going ahead. hmmmm wonder whether that may have something to do with protecting ladder positions.
I was always in view in this type of situation that the forfeit would begin with the lowest team.

I don't understand forfeitures of higher grades, while lower grades proceed? Don't we progress players up to the higher grades, provide them the opportunity, and look to fill lower grades? Anyway...
Just further to my last post... this may ruffle some feathers, but its not my intention, just putting my thoughts out there... in making the decision to move the games to Saturday, has the SLC not provided the majority of club players the opportunity to choose to play this weeknd?
Excluding those that work tomorrow, has everyone else not playing chosen to honor some other arrangment over their commitment to baseball? Xmas parties, bucks parties, etc... none of these are 'life essentials' and the choice could be made to forgo these pursuits to, instead, play baseball.
To be clear, I'm passing no judgement on anyone for the choice they've made... just noting that a choice was made.
If it comes to pass that our club participants have no interest in supporting the ABL All-Star game, the SLC would be forced to reconsider this approach if the same situation arose in the future.
Given the other options available to the SLC were to cancel the competition altogether (thus removing any choice for people to play) or continue with games scheduled against the All-Star Game (thus 'failing' to support the concept), I'm not sure what better choice could be made.
I'm loathe to remove the choice for participants to participate. Club members pay for the privilege to participate and the thought of our league removing any choice to participate undermines the commitment of all our members.
But for our administration to act in a manner considered unsupportive when our State Government has committed much needed resources (at least over the past 12 months) to the development of our sport, would seem counter to key responsibilities.
Considering it's happened in the past, I fear the likely choice would be to cancel games altogether and the choice we were all given this weekend would be removed.

I'm perplexed that the Rebels and Rams were able to shift their 1sts game when the directive was that games were rescheduled to the Sat. Goblin, I agree... as for the forfeits, I scanned the playing conditions and I see nowhere that dictates lower grades must be forfeited before higher grades... I have some recollection this was a rule in the past, but to encourage teams that knew early they would forfeit to announce it, it was removed (to stop teams waiting until game time to forfeit, inconveniencing everyone).

I wholeheartedly agree with Goblin and aueagle30 re forfeit of higher teams - IMHO the playing conditions should be changed. This issue comes up just about very year. As for the Rebels-Rams reschedule, playing condition 4 makes it pretty clear that only the SLC can determine or amend the fixture. is this what happened or did the teams concerned just agree to this among themselves?

Goblin, not sure what makes it a long bow...
I had two family Christmas parties on Saturday that had been planned for some time... I made the choice to forgo those to uphold my commitment to baseball... just as others have chosen to uphold the commitments they had arranged prior to the game change... other than work (I'm sure there are other scenarios I'm missing, but I assume they're a rarity), these arrangements are a choice.
Again, I only use my situation as an example, and not to judge my choice as any better than anyone else's... I fully respect each individuals right to choose his/her priorities... choosing baseball has been a lifelong decision for me, at times to the detriment of my family... thankfully, they are wonderful people that respect my choice to make baseball a priority.

We have about 25 players missing (some through injury) today in our men's, and our Fourths have the day off due to the opposition withdrawing from the competition this week.
But we will still field a team in all 6 men's and women's games today. We have 13 of our girls filling gaps for the missing men. Some driving to essendon, then over to williamstown to make sure we field all teams.
Great show of club support for the girls to play in both the men's and women's comps today and ensure none of our teams have to forfeit.

In Division One, the youthful Waverley pitching staff dominated Geelong for a 3-0 win over the league leaders, Blackburn was too strong 9-6 over an Upwey outfit that kept coming and Essendon found Malvern tough before getting a 6-4 break. Cheltenham is solid in fourth after blitzing Sunshine 12-0, Preston turned the tables on Melbourne with a 10-7 result and Doncaster stopped Sandringham 4-1 in a ripper game that was tight throughout. www.vicsummerleague.baseball.com.au/
