Congratulations to players and staff selected to represent Australia at the 2011 Baseball World Cup being held in Panama City from 2-15 October this year (that's right, just a few weeks away). Victoria is well represented, with James Beresford, Brad Harman, Kable Hogben, Justin Huber, Andrew Russell and Scott Wearne selected in the playing group. We will again seek to have Head Coach Jon Deeble on board should he be prepared to keep the Forum informed of team progress during the World Cup. I understand the team flew out today - good luck guys!! can anybody add some links so we can follow some game progressive scores for example? Or even make it easy and add a page link from the ABF site as a starting point? I have added something already via facebook that gives me this, but every avenue possible would be great - cheers, again good luck guys!!

Rhricho your correct we did fly out when you said as I'm not real sure when that was now, it was a long trip here I know that but the whole team has arrived now and we have a practice session tmw. Pretty warm here even at nite and it's the wet season I think so humidity is high also. If you want to follow our progress and day to day things I think Facebook and twitter are updated all the time and if any one has any questions fire away

Hey wearnie, Keep the fluids up mate! Good luck! Have you got all your training gear? If not you can use the junior stuff unused from the recent junior tournament in Mexico!

Frita we got all our uniforms and training gear yesterday when the whole team had arrived. Those of us that were already here went to a small high school field for a throw and run was an interesting drive as we are staying in the city and drove through the outskirts of town which was interesting. We also drove alongside the panama canal which I knee nothing about ( should of payed attention in high school geog) although hubes obviously did as he gave me a quick lesson. Rhricho I have only seen beardy for a minute but I think he did some dancing in the lobby last nite with the Panamanian dancers who have been entertaining us from the minute we got of the plane. Heading of to our first practice session soon, think all the boys are looking forward to getting out on the park together

Jon Deeble again writes exclusively for the Baseball Forum. His reports will be posted here and in the General Aussie Board as they become available.
Friday 30 September (AEST)
Arrived in Panama last night, had a brief meeting and uniform distribution. It was a good chance to catch up with the boys and how their season went this year, it was also good to meet some new young faces on the team. With nine players making their debut, things were definitely different. With no Ben Risinger and Luke Hughes around it was a lot quieter than in the past.
Up today for a good breakfast and walk around Panama City. It is quite a nice place downtown but quickly turns as you move out towards suburbia. We had a training session at 1 pm today one hour from the hotel, it was every bit of 90 minutes. The ground was very shaky, we couldn’t take an outfield workout for the fear of broken ankles - it was very rough.
We took a great infield though, with Huber at first base, Wearne and Harman at second, Stefan Welch at third and James Beresford at SS, behind the plate we had Matt Kennelly Alan De San Miguel and Joel Naughton. It was as good an infield as I had seen in a long time, everyone was upbeat and sharp.
Every pitcher bullpened and I can tell you we have some outstanding young arms. It was very impressive and will be one of the strengths of the team. Our new pitcher Clayton Tanner looked great, a three-quarter slot from the left side with a good moving fastball, good change up and a real nice slider. He is going to really help us, Andy Russell looked really good also with his side arm slot, as did big Dushan Ruzic.
We took BP, which was also impressive. Young kids you see coming out of our academy are now men, plenty of balls went into the houses. I can say everyone looked good and is in good shape ready to go. We also went through our team fundamentals, including second and thirds and bunt defences.
Long 90 minute trip home and ready to eat.
Good to see big Phil Dale getting around with his new hip after surgery. The classic comment came from Jimmy Beresford last night to me as Phil was hobbling past. “When is he going to get that hip fixed?” With tears in my eyes I told him that is fixed.
Tomorrow we have a early start, 7.45 bus. We had planned and organised a game four weeks ago versus Netherlands. The organising committee in their wisdom pulled us out of the game two days ago and put Panama in there - so we had no game. Last night we got hooked up with Nicaragua, not ideal as we play them in our round but better than nothing. Everyone will get to pitch an inning except for Ruzic, who will start against Cuba. Feeling really good about that game as Ruzic 3-hit them last game we played.
Great hotel and food has been good so far. We leave on the night of the 1st for a town called Chitre. Not sure if it will be like Panama City. I am betting not.

Not the best start for Team Australia - Cuba winning 14-0 in 7 innings.
Have no doubt that the team will bounce back for their next game against Italy, tomorrow morning our time.

Final from today's game - Italy 7 Australia 0
From the draw, I think it is Korea who Team Australia has tomorrow.

Korea 8 Australia 0 is today's final.
I think this means that Australia has to win all remaining pool games in order to progress to the next round.

Win a game! How bout score a bloody run!!!!!! Not so sure that the last part of the post is an unreasonable expectation from every supporter and as its a forum, why not air your opinion. Bit sensative Wearnie, maybe a bit out of line actually, not like he's bagging all the 0 fa's or the near double digit era's, 29-0, one run would be nice

What! I'm wrong? Don't think so. And rhricho, starting already? Going to be a fun season ahead. You'll be happy to know that my career has taken off, as I'm no longer a div 2 2nds player, but I'm in div 3 now! You'll be happy with that, I'm sure.

Agreed 3u3d he is not asking to much and I can assure you that me and the rest of the team are well aware that we need to score some runs to win. Of course people are gunna be asking questions about all of us and how we are playing it comes asnpart of the selection, dealingnwith muppets that is. I would say 80% of the boys read the forum on a dailynbasis andnreally appreciate the supportnfrom the people back home. Hopefully our luck wil turn around after our day off. I can tellnyoumright now we have played some goodnbaseball haven't caught a break at all our stats and box scores and scores do not reflect the brand of baseball we have been playing. Funny game

I am one of the few Team Australia fans that is in Panama and has watched every game so far. All our team needs is 1 break and I am sure the firworks will explode. Our team is playing great baseball. Pitchers have made a few mistakes but not many. Our hitter are making some great contact but straight to fielders. The other teams have made diving catches, throwing out players from the knee etc. When we are out in the field everything just seems to fall in, not for lack of trying on our part. Just to let you know today is a rest day 34 degrees with humidity in the 90's and some of the guys have asked for some extra batting practice. Get behind this team people, a WIN is just around the corner.

The results have been disappointing, that is true. None would be more disappointed than the players and staff. Playing for your country is a huge honour and I know that every one of the players is giving 100 percent. Stating the obvious is not helpfull. Australia has achieved what it has in baseball with little funding, lots of volunteer effort, putting up with what in my opinion is blatant discrimination by the IBAF and huge effort from players and coaches. The team is young and in comparison to most other teams, very inexperienced at this level. Just because we want to win, doesn't mean we should give up on the team when we are losing. Players have been overseas since Feb, had hard seasons, stayed in the USA at their own expense to cut costs for the good of the team. They did not have a chance to practice together as a team until they got to Panama conditions have been disgraceful. I think they deserve a little more respect. Baseball is far from perfect here and there is a lot that needs improving but it was an awesome effort by Jon, the ABF and the players to even get to the tournament. That is the reality of baseball in Australia. It's a continuous struggle that the players and staff have dedicated their lives to. Perhaps us supporters can do the same and stand by our team!

Just one question, why did Panama get to host these games if it is so poorly done over there ?
Deebs and the boys (and all the other guys over there) clearly deserve better.
Anyway, stick it to em lads with that good old 'backs to the wall' Aussie approach hey :-)
