Nth Cob Rebels and Ringwood played out a 'spirited' 3-all draw this arvo in B Grade with both sides maybe feeling like they could have got the win. And Ringy won easy in BRes (maybe 11-1 ?). The ground held up well and was in pretty good nick really out in the Nthrn suburbs ! Yes, a good game for the most part. We gifted two runs with a bases loaded error. Masa was very good as were our young Kingstons on the hill. The bottom of the last was particularly good for us, with the scores already tied, Masa led off with a HPB, the SAC bunt was always next but we messed it up and allowed runners on first and third. An intentional walk loaded them up with none out. Gerard Kingston pitched well getting a ground ball to short for the force at the plate. A squeeze play with the ball picked up by our 2B got the out at home for the second out and a great pick up by Keal Kingston at 3B to step on the bag to fight out a draw. Our A grade got over Research in a close one, don't know many details but held them scoreless for the last few innings and pinched the win. Cheesy with a HR.

Monash 9-8 over Bundoora in a ball-tearer at the Farm. Uni led early 4-1, Bundoora rallied to go ahead 8-4, then Monash went nuts in the bottom last to win it with one out. Postie Powell the hero for Monash, hiitting a bases loaded double over CF to tie it up. On the cancelled games -- we don't let a home club unilaterally call a game 25 minutes before game-time, so why 25 hours before? My cricket comp tells all teams in wet weather (home & away) to have one rep at the ground 9.30am to inspect, and if they agree it's unplayable, game is off. If one side doesn't show up, they have to accept the other side's decision. Cuts out any whingeing or suspicion of home town calls, and gets max play for minimum travel. As for calling off the women's games at Sandy, in the heart of the sandbelt, two days beforehand -- bizarre.

Very ordinary on behalf of the DBA. Completely understand safety and all the rest but 24 hours before game time was definately a little hasty. We are playing WINTER baseball after all!! Not sure of the state of grounds on Friday morning and similarly on Saturday afternoon but at least give it a chance for some action, I reckon games could have been played just quietly!

Broohaha, they called off women's games that are played on a Sunday at lunchtime on Friday. That to me is very strange.
My team had a bye this weekend, so we didn't miss out. But in a short seasoned women's comp that already has 3 byes per team, seems strange to not wait until at least Sunday morning to check out the grounds.

Well, people, week nine is overand done with, grounds dried out, the bar worked well, as the ground was drying out. Let's get over the washout, I am sure week ten will bring something else to complain about. Have a nice week.

OMR you miss the point, looking at the MWBL results 90% of games went ahead. It was a terrible call.

My Dear Puma, get that thorn out of your paw. The point has not been lost, but the decision was made and that be the end of it. The member clubs voted in the Execitive to make these decisions. If your Club doesn't like it, you have the power to change it at the next AGM. P.S. I daresay a majority of the ground may have dried out by Senior game time. Major cricket associations generally havea decision made Saturday morning without consultation between the two captains, that will only occur on the 2nd day of a two day game.

Thats a good point OMR, in fact I might even start doing that with my team as well. Everytime someone makes an error I'll just drop them for the next game, or do you think I shouldn't point out what they did wrong? At the moment I have this silly theory about people learning from their mistakes.

Jimmyk, having been a parent with kids growing up playing sport, an early call sure does take the pressure of having to waste a Saturday morning drive to a ground that would be only good for ducks. Just look outside your Club and accept that other Clubs also had a say. Besides, a week off and the body doesn't hurt. Just the wallet that was supporting the Club.

Once again you miss the point, you ground may have been only good for ducks, ours was fine, along with most other clubs. Even if juniors was called Friday there was still no need to take the call out of the umpires hand for the senior games.

Puma, There are no points to be made. A decision was made and that the end of it. And our ground was perfect, considering the rain. No ducks. I definately would not trust the judgement of some of the umpires.

It wasn't my call to make. It was a collective decision by the committee and that is what we abide by whether it is right or wrong. That is why we a democratic society so that we can all voice our opinion and pregnant dog about anything. So, the round was cancelled, today is Monday and next weeks yet to come. Let's have some fun this week and play.

For the record I think the DBA have been doing a great job this year. They said at the start of the year they're happy to listen to what the clubs want and they've been true to their word.
Calling the entire round off so early was, in my opinion, a mistake. I appreciate that it was done with the best intentions but with the benefit of hindsight would they have made the same decision? A few weeks ago we were hosting Boneo on a wet weekend and I had team managers calling me that morning to check how the grounds were before they left for the game. I won't say its a perfect system but all 3 games went ahead.
If we are going to start calling games off early then where do we draw the line, 24 hours before if there's a 50% chance it won't go ahead? How do we determine how likely the game is to go ahead, just from weather reports or should the home clubs be consulted first?hat bout the away teams, do they get a say as well, they might be happy to travel knowing the game might still be called
OMR if discussing the DBA's wet weather policy under this thread offends you feel free to start a new topic for it. But don't tell people not to voice their opinion just because it's different to yours.

Interesting reading both sides of the argument re D.B.A. "washout" call. But O.M.River, you really are clutching at straws to put it on the basis of not trusting the umpires to make the call. Not sure on any given day/ground how you would know if the umpire made a good or bad call..maybe you have examples?Would have thought it was a given that umpires have never called a game "on "when both managers thought if was unfit/unsafe.It 's the home managers call until the plate meeting anyway.

There are two sides to this issue, as eckersley points out.
There is no doubt that everyone would have preferred the games to be played, without any weather intervention. In making the call that it did, the DBA did what it perceived to be the right thing in terms of safety and not causing inconvenience to any party.
On the other hand, if we play baseball as a winter sport, then we should expect to get cold and wet weather at this time of year. And we should accept that. Winter players pay decent money to be involved in the game and can understandably feel dudded if they miss out on game time.
Had the rain continued into Saturday and Sunday - and conditions had deteriorated further - the DBA would have been complimented for making an inspired call. As it turned out, the call may have been made prematurely on this occasion.
As a general rule, the decision to cancel games should be left as late as possible. But it can be a difficult situation, especially where players and officials might be required to travel to a venue only to be told to turn around and go home. I recall that BV copped some flak last summer for calling rain-outs too early or too late, especially when there can be such variation in rainfall patterns and/or the condition of grounds across a large geographic area. It can be a no-win situation.
Maybe part of the answer is to utilise social media and websites more actively to get updates (on rainfall and ground conditions) before any blanket decision on cancellations is made.
From my experience, club officials, team managers and umpires are generally on the same page when it comes to getting out on the park if at all possible.

Having a look at the long range forecast, because I am a geek at heart, the next couple of days look cold with frost, but Friday and Saturday .... well look for yourself Friday 29 June Min 10 Max 14 Afternoon shower. Melbourne area Partly cloudy. Isolated showers and the chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon and evening. Winds northerly 30 to 35 km/h, decreasing to 20 to 25 km/h during the afternoon. Saturday 30 June Min 9 Max 13 Afternoon shower. Melbourne area Partly cloudy. Isolated showers. Winds north to northwesterly 20 to 25 km/h tending west to northwesterly 15 to 20 km/h during the day. *source bom.gov.au Hopefully these "showers" are not too bad. I think that the early call was good, from the point of view that it was early, players were kept informed and it was consistent. Personally I would prefer to find out on the morning of the game if the ground was no good, but look at our league, there was no way a game would have been played at FH due to its location. This was relayed early and I think this is right. Can see both sides. **You got in just before me KC

What makes the DBA's decision more bewildering is the fact that there is a bye in A1 and A2. Four teams have 3 byes and the rest have 2 - that leaves 15/16 games played for the season! I would have thought that trying to get in as much baseball as possible would have been the best outcome!

An absolutely valid point, broohaha.
Similarly in GBA A Grade, there is a bye. Most teams thereby playing 15 games. If you lose a couple through bailing out when it rains, it becomes not much of a season.
And TJ, great minds......well, you know what they say. ;D

I definitely agree with jimmyk on this one. I also think the DBA executive are doing a great job this year. They really are doing some good things.
But i still think they made a mistake on calling off all games for the full weekend.
OMR, you may have enjoyed the week off (as i did), however, for a lot of people out there, the game they get to play on Saturday (or Sunday) is what they look forward to all week - and they pay for the privilege to do so. And for a lot of clubs, it is the money through the canteen that they rely on. I don't see any issue with people getting on here to voice their opinion when they feel hard done by. Especially when i think they definitely have an argument.
I think it will be good for the DBA in the long run, if they listen to the masses. I would suggest a majority would agree with Puma and Broohaha in this situation. It's great that we have this forum. The more people talking about topics and ideas the better.............no matter right or wrong.

I do think that the midday call was premature, an error in judgement may have occurred. I do agree with what has been said in this forum and do not have a problem with it. Let's hope that a lesson has been learnt and future decisions will be more balanced. The DBA is doing a great job, especially with the various problems they have had to face over the last couple of seasons. Let the sunshine come.

As others have stated it seems the DBA are really working hard on providing a great baseball experience over there, and I have always thought its a good idea to call a complete round off if the forecast is (for example) destined to be a 42+ day in Summer or in Winter its day two of predicted heavy rain/hail etc across the entire metro area, particularly as it is then fairer if all games are not played rather than less than half and the imbalance that has on the fixture.
Having said that the test of any good policy probably should be whether it would have been enacted if it were the last round of the home and away season with teams needing to win/play etc.
In that case, with the same conditions and forecast, perhaps it may not have been enacted in that circumstance ?

The part I've never understood about calling games of in advance is that all people involved in the game are committed their Saturday (or Sunday) afternoons to the undertaking anyway. All players, officials, and supporters have already made travel plans, have planned to be at the baseball field an hour or so before the game starts, have planned to be on the field for a couple of hours, and have planned to have a chat with their mates afterwards. Sure, it sucks when you turn up and getdon't a game, but as I think we are starting to see, it sucks more when you're told not to turn up and the baseball gods end up putting on a display of fine weather and you could have played.

At last - the most sensible thing I've read so far on this topic.
As someone said - this is winter baseball. Bad weather is to be expected! People are already committed time wise so don't call games off until the last minute. If that means people travel for a 'no game' then bad luck. You get to go home early!
We've already heard a number of reports that grounds were 'fine' and playable so those guys/girls missed out for what?
Make the decision on the day and live with it.

Surely this is the biggest case of d**ned if they do, d**ned if they don't.
For the sake of this argument, let's say it DID rain on Saturday. There would be so much praise for the DBA in making a good call early, and the MWBL would be getting slammed for not having the foresight to call the round early.
In this instance, yes, some guys/girls missed out on a game that possibly could have been played. Is it really that big of a deal?
Personally, I would prefer to be told early that the games have been cancelled and be slightly disappointed that we COULD have played, than drive across town only to find out ground was unplayable.
