One of our Forum members – a person of august standing in the baseball community - recently floated the idea of Victoria running a fund-raising event along the lines of the 100-innings game, an annual charity fundraiser founded by the Boston Men’s Baseball League. How would it be, he asked, if we could organise a host of BV players from all clubs to play such a game over the course of 30-36 hours at Altona, Latrobe or Geelong? It could be promoted in the broader community, it would be a great spectacle and it would potentially raise valuable funds for a cause to be specified. The person who raised the idea is really keen to get this up and running and would like to hear from anyone else interested in helping take the project on. If you are interested, either respond in this thread or message me for contact details. For those not familiar with the fundraiser, check out this link: www.bostonbaseball.com/100innings.php

Sounds like a great idea kc - just needs a central and lit venue I guess so as many people as possible can play and/or watch, and the weather would be important and the timing with weekend and mid week games key too but it wouldnt it be great to get a person from every single club in Vic sporting their playing top for the cause.
Ohhh yeah the cause would be key too !
Happy to offer a Preston-Reservoir Buccaneer or two as well - but us old blokes do need to be in bed by 10pm :-)

We tried this a number of years ago with Blackburn.
The impossible task is getting a council to approve the use of lights after "normal allowable hours".
Good luck and hopefully it comes off - we couldn't get it past council.

If you get it up and running, I think you should talk to Matty Prior, he could easily throw 100 innings for one side. I remember hearing about him throwing 9 innings on the Saturday in DBA, then another 9 on the Sunday in Latrobe Valley... Every week! So 100-innings seems like it'd be a walk in the park for him!

Lando i think Matty Prior could throw the 100 innings for both sides. And knowing him, would probably back it up by throwing the midweek, and sunday games as well......

So, a new year approaches and this idea wont leave my head.
I'm thinking 'Movember' has to be the obvious choice for us as a charity - raising money for mens health issues. Ideally a game in mid November - starting at 6pm on a Friday night and all going well, finishing somewhere between 6 - 9pm the following night. I think we'd try and get a range of players involved (they would nominate what level they were at) so that we could have a range of teams and abilities represented over the course of the game... all up I can see the need for around 20 - 25 teams of approx 10 players each... that way, the more serious players wont be asked to do to much before their regular Sunday game.... if each player gave $20 for the cause, we could end up with $5000+ Wondering if Preston might be our obvious choice for a venue... no housing around to be bothered by lights on all night... maybe BV can chip in with some $ for keeping the lights on for 12 hours.... some corporate sponsors would be awesome too - maybe a black v white uniform and cap could be designed for the event! Would need to keep the food and fluids going all night long... as well as the need for officials (scorers/ umpires) Anyone interested in making this a reality I'd be keen to hear from you.... I think it could become an annual event and a showcase for BV in terms of giving back to our community...

Maybe some involvement from the Aces (schedule permitting) would be beneficial to both causes. Definite mainstream media potential (IMHO).

p.s., I don't know about that many players or teams but I think the idea has legs. I think a Wookie would have to be the mascot if it was "Movember" themed.

think u guys need to speak to some college players, I think they all do a 100 inning game and get it done quick smart, bp pitching etc etc, accelerated counts etc, its not a 24 hour process

I think this is a great idea and hope it can happen but any suggestion of getting BV involved will mean it won't happen or their involvement will cause nothing but problems. I suggest you do it without their "support".

Thanks everyone... reckon a black and white cap with the Movember logo on it would look sweet...checking with the Movember guys now about use of their logo. Also thinking we should have a few times when we have some Masters players out there and some of our Womens teams involved too.... Oldracer: not interested in speed up rules... nothing really worth doing was ever achieved by taking short cuts. Besides, a few uncomfortable hours overnight is nothing compared to fighting the big C hey? Attachments:

You could put on the road and play it several venues and spread it around. Just a thought to get more people involved from all areas. Time slots at grounds and when time is near make a phone call and call playball at the next venue. It could be fun. I'm sure a few Cardinal Masters would jump on board. I am pretty BV could sanction it. Even the BUAV might get involved and donate their time.

Hi larry42, thanks for your interest, can you tell me what BV can or will do for your club in it's current situation? Should they be involved?

i think its a great idea and Preston would be happy to be involved for an dusk till dawn show...given that most of the younger guys don’t go out until about 11pm we could have do a spilt shift and have them back at dawn. lots of ideas with breakfast and dinner. lots of media for sure.
ideally it would be a great Aces promo at the new ground, you'd def get the media involved particularly if you could organise every state MLB team around Australia to do on the same night and day. Could make world news if promoted properly, T-shirts and caps…I survived the 100 innings dusk till dawn baseball challenge sort of thing. Anyway lots of ideas for everyone to come up including juniors and senoirs.
we would be happy to join and working group with BASEBALL VICTORIA and maybe janet could bring her self on board and take a leading role to make sure it all goes to plan.

Given its for Movember I think Fri & Sat 23/24 would be ideal... Aces are away, but I wouldnt want to hold it when they are home and take away the crowd from Altona and have 5000 at La Trobe watching our spectacle...
Even thought that members of the baseball community could make donations of say $5 and have something with their loved ones name or cancer survivor written on it and placed on the field (a bit like the pink ladies you often see for breast cancer survivors)
Good to see so many enthused about it.....

Organisers should speak to Rob Novotny at Springvale. Rob a few years ago organised a 24 hr game in the US so a good person to discuss the logistics of the game with.

Hi larry42, thanks for your interest, can you tell me what BV can or will do for your club in it's current situation? Should they be involved? Well Janet i'm affiliated with two clubs although one much less than i once was. One club doesn't need any support, they do just fine. The other club going through some issues at the moment in which BV is working closely with the Committee in support moving forward. PM losing their home ground for most of the year (knowing the Council that will relate to the entire season no doubt). BV working with PM to find alternate venues for both men and women. Also working with club on fixturing and with other clubs on ground changes, etc. Justin Huber working with Club on junior program and how to build up the Program. Its not all doom and gloom at Sports House, and i would also think that BV would lend what support/endorsement needed for a 24 hr game as well. Thats just my opinion.

Nice plan pirates, a very vague idea now has "WORLD NEWS" and all MLB clubs in each state involved and a "working group with BASEBALL VICTORIA" caps, T shirts. If this happens I won't be helping out, that's just what BV would like.....somebody else to do the work! oldmanriver wants it "on the road" and has "dobbed in" the umpires to assist when they can't turn up for their regular weekend games! pirate22 already has a date and 5000 people turning up at Latrobe and BV chipping in money! larry42 forever a politician, "BV is working closely with the Committee in support moving forward" (Gillard would be proud). Just read the junior criteria thread and clubs don't know where they stand with junior numbers and while I'm at it "Sports house" is a waste of your clubs good money! You mention about Justin Huber working with your club re: juniors, shouldn't the last guy at BV have done that and the guy before him and the guy before him and so on! It's the PAID position not a favour for PM! Thats my opinion. I might start a new thread and call it "Crap that will never happen"

The first thing you can put in your new thread, janet, is; "anybody giving a f*** about what you've got to say."

The smart thing to do 6for8 is wait until this idea is 70 innings in with world media before "wacking" me!

Janet, reading you posts does make my day go quicker. A good laugh is fantastic. You remind me of a distant mothjer in law, always right in her mind but never correct. Perhaps all concerned needs you intriguing insight and perhaps all the world will be right. Keep posting around lunchtime so i can keep laughing.

Can we keep this thread on track here? I'm a glass half full kinda person and believe that whoever gets involved - we'll make it happen. Happy to invest some time and effort into making it happen ...regardless of what assistance we get. Thanks Larry for the referral to Rob - do you know if he is on the Forum? I work at La Trobe Uni as well and think I can persuade the marketing students to perhaps help out as part of their assessment as well as getting some sponsors involved... watch this space.... and keep 23/24 November free.....

BV staff may check out the Forum from time to time but are not likely to act unilaterally on proposals contained herein.
I'd suggest that the next step is a formal approach to Baseball Victoria (either by a club or individual) outlining the concept, providing a proposed date and other details. BV could then provide in-principle approval, it could run a story on the proposal, canvass the support of clubs and help get other interested parties on board (including Aces and ABL).
It would then come down to a working group getting the project under way. By the sounds of it, some of our Forum members are prepared to take a leading role.
This could be a real winner, both for the designated cause and for raising baseball's profile in the community at a time when it could be most effective - IE early in the 2012/13 BV and ABL seasons.

Thanks KC...I'm onto it - spoke to Brett Hidson at BV about it last year and will raise it again.... he was certainly supportive and interested in the concept then, and I dont see any reason wh ythat would change - appreciate your good points made (as always).....

Hey looks like the "vague idea" has grown some legs. Nice work.... 22 ..we have our big annual come and try baseball day on the 26 August once that's done our committee is ready to assist. I'm happy to arrange the bill boards for the main roads, if you can get your guys to send me the art work. If you want We'll contact the local media and I'm sure we have contacts for radio stations. I've spoken to one of our sponsors and they are happy to put some mobile phones up for prizes. How about some t shirts to sell before and at the event. I'll speak to our other sponsor about the t shirts. Maybe get your students come up with some slogans......Let's see if we can get a celebrity to throw out the first and last pitch. Sam Newman ? TV footage? Make sure you arrange one those uni student nights on the Friday night there as well ha ha ha.
