Sorry about the couple of weeks off, but wow has there been some results. We are heading towards the business end and the ladder, while it did seem to start taking shape, is now opening up again. A Grade Croydon took back top of the ladder (and have just about sown up a finals berth) from Heathmont who can only draw games Research have put a gap on the lower part of the comp and Greensborough have decided to lose to keep it interesting. MATCH OF THE ROUND Forest Hill vs Research - Massive game when aone pitcher comes up against their old team, but I think Research are a better hitting line up and will get over the line. Too many guys can hurt you if you make a mistake. The best battle will be between the two pitchers and if I wasn't playing, I would be there to watch this one. GMBC vs Watsonia - Monty will win this one, Watsonia are not hope to keep it close so that their percentage stays above FH and Uni. It would be a shame if watsonia were to go down. what would the league do? Heathmont Blackcats vs North Balwyn - Good hitting beats good pitching in this battle, especially when you can miss hit home runs at Waverley . Penguins will be too strong with their hitting line up as good as any. Melbourne University vs Greensborough - Look to be honest, I don't know how Uni have only scored 27 runs so far for the season. This is simply not enough. Greens need to win and keep a full game in front of the pack, but the pack are coming. Ringwood vs Croydon - This is a tough one, but when ring have a couple of guys on the hill who are on, they play very well. Croydon do manage to keep winning games though, so could be a good game. Both teams have a good hitting line up and it will definitely come down to who is able to take their opportunities when they can. B Grade Well, Knox lost, does that mean Collingwood will lose the GF as well?? There is now a gap between the top four and the rest and this is probably the way it will end up. Diamond Creek vs Monash University - Could be a good game, both have the ability to win this game and it probably becomes a bit of a grudge match as the winner of this will almost certainly finish above the other. If DC can get their game together at once they will very strong. Monash need to win to show that their move to MWBL was a good one. MATCH OF THE ROUND Knox vs Waverley Blackcats - Some believe this will be the potential GF preview and while it is the top two on the ladder, I do not think they will be in the GF together (first big prediction for B grade this season). Knox will be too strong, you essentially have an A Grade side playing in the comp while Waverley were not strong enough to stay in A grade. Guys that hit down the entire order. At Knox, watch out for a few HR's as well. La Trobe Uni. vs Bundoora - Uni way too strong in this match up. bundoora have won more games so far this season than they did last year which shows they are improving, but Uni is hitting their form. If they can maintain this, they will do some damage in the finals. Mitchell Majors vs Ringwood - Ring have lost a few games, but they should prove too strong for MM. I heard the bikes are on in Broadford this weekend, so lock up your cars ;D. Ring have showed that they are capable again this season and could potentially go on a run as they don't play any team abovce them until the last two weeks. They may challenge late for finals, but will be up against it. North Coburg Rebels vs Westgarth - People seem to forget that the only reason Westgarth are not in A Grade this year was because they lost some guys to college. If they keep them about, they go extremely close to winning the comp. They showed last week that when they put their game together (and a call goes their way ) that they are as good as any. reservoir with a good win last week and are in that next group to challenge for finals, but will prob just miss. Good luck

Knox B Res: 12-7 over Waverley. After being down 7-1 things were looking bleak but the lads toughed it out.
Knox B Grade were 3-0 up after an hour.. not sure final score..

DC 6 - Monash 7; if my memory serves correct.
DC with winning run on 2nd and 1 out. Line drive to 1st followed by a K to end it. Monash were up 5-1 with about 30 mins to play.
Mike Hunt with a homer in the first for Monash.

Ringwood almost with a perfect record this week with 7 out of 8 senior teams getting up for a win and all our juniors as well. Leggy was outstanding on the hill against Croydon keeping them scoreless while the boys managed to score 8 of our own. We travelled to Broadford and won just 4 - 3. We were not at our best.

Westgarth in BRes easy over the NC(Resa)Rebels. B Grade Westgarth 6-5 over us, that makes 4 games lost by the Rebels this year by a single run PLUS 2 draws Baseball can be a 'funny' game (and feel free to correct me Lando if I get this wrong) but in B Grade it was a pretty good game with both teams having chances to win and it was 6-5 Westgarth in the bottom of the last and Lando was throwing to our lead off and put him on with a walk, then the pickoff went wild giving him 2nd, then a wild pitch/passed ball gets him to 3rd, then he was picked off at third (silence in the Rebels dug-out) Seems unfair Lando that you would give him 1st, then give him 2nd, then give him 3rd only to erase him over there (and Resa chances of tieing the game at worst).

Well to be fair Authentic, I had him picked off at 1st. And as for 3rd base... One of the cardinal rules of baseball is don't be the 1st or 3rd out at 3rd... You're the tying run, on 3rd base, with 0 out in the bottom of the last, and you get picked off?!? You cannot call that smart baseball... Especially when the next two hitters flew out to RF, so he probably woulda tagged and scored... Good game though. We had one inning that was costly for us (I didn't help that situation, sorry Errol). Hopefully we can keep the momentum going and take it into finals...

How come you can only have 3 re-entry players in this comp? In the summer there is no such restriction. I think all it does is stop a young 2nds player from getting an AB late in a 1sts game. What does this law hope to achieve?

Restricts clubs to a max of 3, otherwise clubs can stack their 2s team and have all those players come back in after 2 complete innings.

interesting rule excised at the Watsonia Monty game. Coach visited the pitcher late in the game which was played in great spirit by both clubs. Later catcher calls time goes out to settle the pitcher. Umps tells coach he has to make a pitching change. Apparently new rule that anybody visiting the pitcher 2 times will enforce the rule to make a pitching change. Why make the rule change and make it different to the summer league or will it be brought in for this summer.

Its been used a few times this season, was pulled out during the Research-Greensborough game and i hear it was also done at a heathmont game aswell.
Basically the rule is there to stop time wasting late in games as MWBL is ALL time limit games in all grades. Where in summer you have the 1's playing 9 innning no time limit games (except midweek).

I don't see any clubs in summer stacking their 2nds to then re-enter in the 1sts so l can't imagine winter clubs doing it. Big deal if they do. The whole idea of re-entry is so the 1sts don't need to carry spares and that way a borderline player can play 2s and then come into the 1s if required. Say a coach makes a few changes late in the game that they are winning easily so his 2nds players can have a swing against 1st pitching. Then with 10 mins to go someone else gets injured. 3 re-entry already players used so you play one short??? Madness!!

Clubs wouldn't stack the 2s. That's a sure fire way to lose players...who wants to pay their fees to play 2 digs in the firsts and then be shown the shower...

Can anyone actually confirm the existence of this rule?
There seems to be some contention, even amongst umpires.
Where is it in black and white?

8.06 A professional league shall adopt the following rule pertaining to the visit of the manager or coach to the pitcher: (a) This rule limits the number of trips a manager or coach may make to any one pitcher in any one inning; (b) A second trip to the same pitcher in the same inning will cause this pitchers automatic removal; (c) The manager or coach is prohibited from making a second visit to the mound while the same batter is at bat, but (d) if a pinch-hitter is substituted for this batter, the manager or coach may make a second visit to the mound, but must remove the pitcher. A manager or coach is considered to have concluded his visit to the mound when he leaves the 18-foot circle surrounding the pitchers rubber.

Rule 32 Bv playing conditions states
Rule 8.06 does not apply to baseball victoria competitions.
Does this include MWBL?

Puma, that is something I'm not aware of, can't find any specific info in the MWBL by-laws, etc. It would certainly be interesting if it went to a protest.
Masters, it depends on which grade we're talking about - I'm assuming A grade, since I don't think club umpires would bother with that... I couldn't stick around, but my take would be - the catcher may have been listed as the assistant coach on the team sheet, in which case - it would be an official visit. I can't confirm that he was listed, or that any of it happened, as I wasn't there.

this is what I received from the MWBL pres when I questioned the rule. Its from the Aust rules of baseball and refers to tournament play which the MWBL has adopted.

Puma, I'd love to know where you got that from, I've just done a quick search through the rules on the BV site, and can't find that anywhere?
Also, you said its in the BV playing conditions, does that actually refer to the Summer League playing conditions?

Sorry Guys, I know I am not the smartest bloke going around, but this is still unclear to me.
Is it a rule or not?
8.06 says "yes". BV playing conditions says "no". MWBL, which is part of BV says "yes".

Post by stockley on Jul 26, 2011 15:41:55 GMT 10
There is a rule in the Official Australian Baseball Rules for 8.06 so from an broad base of Australian Baseball - yes it is a rule.
BV Summer league playing conditions specifically recant the rule, so for the BVSL - no it is not a rule.
MWBL do not specifically recant the rule, so it seems the rule is official. DBA - don't know, Latrobe Valley - don't know, Sunrasia - don't know, etc.
There is a pretty solid case to be made here to unify all playing conditions to match up and ensure that every league plays under the same set of rules. It would seem to make sense to reduce the confusion across the board.
Areas that it would make sense for: (8.06 example above) Junior pitch counts being standardised, with one date set (for example 1st October) for changeover of ages

Hi guys (and girls), To put this into perspective, the MWBL decided to adopt the Official Australian Rules of Baseball and two years ago, at our 1st delegates meeting prior to the season issued all clubs with a rule book. The simple reason was that these rules have been adopted for all local, state and national tournament play in Australia, so any coach involved in these carnivals will play under these rules. As far as the match conditions and rules and by-laws are concerned, these are 'local' competition rules, adopted for the MWBL. The easiest way to interpret how all this works is, unless stated otherwise in the MWBL Match Conditions, the Official Australian Rules of Baseball apply. Our match conditions only cover specifics such as game time, pitch counts, finals eligibilty etc - not as far reaching as an interpretation of the rules of baseball. My conclusion is this - I don't disagree with consistency of rules across baseball in Victoria, and especially within our own league, this is why for the 1st time for 25 years, all of our MWBL rule are uniform (meaning the RD Junior and DV Juniors now play under the same rules and match conditions) but take into account the variables that our leagues in winter and then summer have. This makes it almost impossible to have one set of rules that satisfies everyone. So my advice for MWBL clubs, teams and players, read the Official Australian Rules of Baseball, then refer to the MWBL Match Conditions for more specific competition rules, don't be concerned at this point about what happens in summer and it will make all of our lives simplier over the course of a season.

OK, one more to round this off - Master Chef is on. The re-entry rule. This is restricted to 3 for a number of reasons. Firstly, we play time games in MWBL, and apart from an 8 innings MUBC v Heathmont 0-0 draw, or going back to the dark ages, an Heathmont v Watsonia dual that saw Spike Sheldon-Collins and Darren Snelson throw 9 complete innings for a 1-1 draw, we normally get 6 to 7 innings played. In summer, with 9 innings played, the roster needs to be expanded, 6 to 7 innings means the roster 'should' be less of an issue. Secondly, the rule as originally introduced so that clubs that were running with the bare 9 in a higher grade were not disadvantaged against teams that could list 11, 12, 13 players. And last but not least it is a little about not allowing clubs to stack teams. Sometimes it does happen, but clubs that are successful in A grade and A reserve (for example) shouldn't be disadvantaged when a club that realises after 10 rounds their 1's won't make the finals, but their 2's may, don't stack the lower team. As far as losing a player to injury with 10 minutes left and all 3 re-entries used - there are 2 options. The infectious Disease rule (24) allows an injured (bleeding) player to exit the game (with the permission of the umpire) to seek medical treatment and a substitute player take his place, who can field and bat, for a total of 1 complete innings (3 offensive and 3 defensive outs). Also, a team can also use a substitute player with the permission of the umpire when a player is removed from the game. The only restriction being that player cannot bat. These 2 rules, along with the 3 re-entries...as well as a team being able to name as many players as they would like to start a game, they are not restricted to just 9, allows for both managers to compete as evenly as possible. Kinda like the AFL Interchange and Sub rule (Madness!!) We would rather try to restrict the opportunity to manipulate the game and therefore upset 1 team, than allow this to be used in a way that disadvantages many teams - remember, this rule was introduced to make the playing field more even for teams with lesser playing numbers....also,. we are coming up to Round 14, maybe a better timed debate would be in February???
