Hello, I am a new user, first post. Just interested in the senior winter champs coming up in Geelong. Have any squads been released as yet? Any surprise selections? I myself am not a player (too old for that at 41!) or involved in any league or club, so I'll be just looking forward to seeing some good ball played.
Seems that after last year its going to be Geelong again by how far? But has the structure of the games changed at all from last year? Watching last years saturday games it seems some teams were holding back in order to try dominate Div 2?!? Hope it doesnt happen again!
let the debate, predictions and arguments begin, and I'll see you all in Geelong (ill be the one with pie stuck in my beard!!)

Welcome aboard, LB. Expect a series preview to be posted on the GBA website early next week. There a few rumours kicking around. It seems that the series will be bigger (and hopefully stronger) than it has been over some of the past few years. Geelong will field a strong strong side under the tutelage of Michael Darcy and Justin Charles. MWBL has been talking up its involvement, with Diamond Valley a certain starter. It's believed that Ringwood may return to the fray after a couple of years' absence. Ballarat will be fielding a team (in Division Two). Dandenong is always tough, Latrobe has had great success in recent times, while Sunraysia, North-East and Bendigo are expected to be among the action. I'll look out for that hairy pie. www.geelongassociation.baseball.com.au

And be careful about trying to find the hairy pie, you could find something else!

Baseball Victoria oversees the running of the winter championships, LB.
I'm sure some Forum members will have more update information, but if there were nine teams then it would be something for BV to work around.
You'd hope that squads and a draw would be made available in the next few days.

From my discussions this week with BV I think there will be 10 teams with Sunraysia entering two sides.
There will be two pools of 5 teams that will play before divisions are decided. It looks like 6 games per side then a div 1 and div 2 final making it 7 games for those lucky few.

Think you might find there is in fact 11 teams competing this year.
City and Ringwood are back, with 2 teams from Sunraysia.
Going to be a very full on weekend of baseball in Geelong....

Looks like Ringwood will not be a starter this year, but City will.
Final entries will be Diamond Valley, Geelong, Dandenong, Sunraysia (two sides), Latrobe Valley, Bendigo, Ballarat, City and North-East.

Ringwood, unfortunately will not be a starter for the Vic Provincials this year. Considering some of these Clubs in this district would be the strongest in Victoria. I almost find it unacceptable that they cannot present a (strong) team.
Croydon Heathmont North Balwyn Forest Hill Knox Waverley Doncaster Wheelers Hill
So who should be looking to get this rectified? What is the process to ensure Ringwood present a Strong Team for future Carnivals?
Also I am led to believe that some players that represented Victoria in Australian Provincials did not play in last years Vic Provincials.
Surely that should be a Pre-requisite that they front up and perform?

Surely that should be a Pre-requisite that they front up and perform? If guys don't want to stick their hand up and play, then you can't force them. Especially when they have to stick their hand in their own pocket and fork out a couple hundred bucks to do so. Best thing to do if you can't scrap together a team of established players is maybe focus on the older juniors, and those just out of, who still have the enthusiasm to spend the long winter weekend playing ball. As far as Provincials goes, you might notice the fact that there were a few empty roster spots this year, hazard a guess why? It is a real shame because, as I'm sure others will vouch for, it's a cracker of a trip. Good ball, good blokes and lots of fun to be had. It just seems there is always a lack of interested parties, probably due to Easter, Under 23's and expenses. In short, let's not further marginalize provincials by imposing unrealistic restrictions... And more people put up there hand god d**n it! It's fun...

6for8, I agree with what you are saying but you cant tell me that between all those clubs firsts, and Ringwood fields a team in A and B, that there isnt enough players who want to go. If you then look at the lower grades as well I refuse to beleive that there arent enough players interested in going.
The first question, if leggy ban answer this, is was or has there a coach in recent years putting their hand up for the team. If they had a coach will to go was it an invite try out? was it one try outs? was the trip then sunk because of lack of interest from players or lack of quality.
With the quality of guys running around in the Ringwood district, and with City back if rumours are to be beleived, MWBL should be investigating why Ringwood cannot field any team for the champs. Even if it was looked at as a development squad or a team of tragics.

Should be a cracker of a weekend, and with 10 teams now in the championships, it seems things are getting better with the return of Ballarat and City, even though Ringwood couldnt get a side up.
My questions are, will 10 teams cause a few headaches? Is it going to be played in pools like last year, then Div 1 and 2 decided from there? 2 pools of 5 or 1 of 4 and 1 of 6? Is there enough time over the weekend to accommodate the games? especially with 2 teams sitting each round (due to their being 4 diamonds)? Interesting problems, but looking forward to weekend nonetheless.
Also, heard that there was the potential for a night game, could be a bit chilly though and dewy for the pitchers, anything further on that idea?

Good to see guys like Kile and Jarryd playing when home from their college breaks. Well done on getting a solid team together Stu. Is Luke playing or is he still injured from Div2 GF series?

Hi guys, definitely disappointing the Ringwood District couldn't get the team up and running again. With the quality of players representing the clubs in all grades then there is no doubt it would be a strong team. Three years ago, Grant Karlson and I tried to get it up and running, made many calls and held a 'registration' night at Heathmont, but unfortunately we only had 3 or 4 guys front. This year Tim O'Meara tried the same, and again only a few takers. At this years Club Coaches meeting, held in March, we raised the winter championships, talked about their importance. In the room were several people who have been involved in the DBA and also have played Vic Provincial and more - so we asked the coaches to try and promote and support this amongst their own clubs. Seeing as ALL senior players are aware that ths weekend is a yearly fixture, I don't prescribe to the well worn excuse that "we didn't know about it, the league needs to organise this earlier". Stu Medland is a perfect example. Someone who has taken ownership of the DV team, and now all you need to do is look at the squad he has put together after a few years of personal commitment. Thanks to Marton Marek from St.Kilda and some of the Melb Uni boys as well, we have a City team for the first time in about 5 years. So. what do we do for Ringwood District? Get a 'respected' person from this group of clubs to commit to getting a team up and running, and then I think if this happens for one year, the second year will be easier and third easier again, and then the league that is the biggest in Vic Winter can again have 3 teams supporting this Championship series. The MWBL can't put a gun to players heads, but we can do everything possible to support this tournament and our teams that will represent our 3 leagues.

All credit to Mark LeGrew, officials of the other participating leagues and of course team organisers, umpires, scorers and players for getting on board with this year's Winter Championship. The weather is looking OK and it shapes as another terrific weekend of winter baseball. I've posted a Series Preview on the GBA website based on minimal knowledge just a few days out. If you can help out with other squads, or with news from your participating league, please let me know. Likewise, over the weekend, the GBA will be seeking to provide day-by-day reporting to complement the Baseball Victoria service. Any positive input will be most appreciated (call 0488 735297 or email kcollins@iprimus.com.au). www.geelongassociation.baseball.com.au

Looking forward to getting down there for the tournament, haven't played a Winter Carnival since bottom age 18s. Should be a good standard of baseball, can't wait.
Though a bit surprised as to why Sunraysia 1 & 2 are in the same pool? They're gonna drive all the way down from Mildura just to play against the same guys they play week in and week out back home?!? Surely they coulda split them up..

Diamond Valley Squad: ... Kile Rogers – Westgarth ... Isn't Westgarth nominally part of City?

Well Leggy I think the Ringwood District clubs are letting you down. As a player for one of those clubs I had no idea that Timmy was head coach and I was not aware of a registration night. I must say I would not have been able to be involved this year but I am sure there are others that may have wanted to.
I dont know the strategy, but were we looking at only the top line players? Do we need to look at maybe rebuilding the brand. Start with the kids that are now too old of U18 provincials and build a team around them? Maybe build a team from lower grades of guys that just want to play? Didnt Stu one year take a team of mainly guys from one club to represent DV? I struggle to beleive that of all the teams in Ringwood District only 3 guys want to play.

The DV team last year had all Watsonia players except for a couple of the Mitchell guys who are back. Some of the Watsonia guys last year were playing in D Seconds grade and now in Watsonia's A Reserve and C Grade teams so great experience for them in their development.
This year's team looks like a mix of A and A Reserve, as well as the B Grade guys from Bundy and Mitchell again.

Shroom... Funny when you look back at the Vic provincial teams of the last 5 years or so, I would say the number of division 1 players participating has been decreasing, hence a great opportunity for div 2 players to get amongst it.
Coincidentally, since VIS stopped participating in the Vic champs it seems the % of players under 18 who are going along (as a whole) has also decreased.
As all these trips are self funded, it becomes a tall order to expect players to need A to qualify for B and so on.

Hi again, Just to update on a few matters, the push for the Ringwood team wasn't restricted to any group, playing experience etc, was a general call through the club coaches or 'people of influence' at these clubs for players to sign up and get the team on the field. We have spoken at length about making this a possible U/23 side, but that rules out anyone who doesn't fit this bracket that wants to come along - although this appears not to be a problem. As for Kile and the Nth Balwyn guys, as City are in Group B and with Kile coming back from college, he wanted to be involved but in the highest division - hence he will be with DV. The North Balwyn guys would normally have been in RD, so with no RD they have been given permission to play with DV. Hopefully these guys will go back to their club and talk with players from other clubs in the RD group and let them know what a great tournament it is and we can get some excitement happening that way.

We will be happy to take Kile over at city, probably even find an innings or two for him to throw ;-)
And there is no first/second division until the finals.
