Last of six..... As you can probably see, the infrastructure is in place, but the groundsman and Aces organisation are making an URGENT CALL for help to finalise work on the playing surface.Anyone who is free during Thursday 25 November - even for an hour or two, anytime from 7.30 AM - is urged to head down to the ground to help out with some general labouring work (nothing heavy). Go to the main field and ask for Kevin. All help will be much appreciated!

By the looks of it a lot of work has been carried out in the past 2 days. Ground is looking better by the day. (well, a lot better than it did look like on Sunday)

Someone from the Aces posted 5 photos of the work at the showgrounds on facebook yesterday. 10 mins latter 4 were removed. 1, which I guesstimate was taken Sun or Mon evening, showed that they had cut in the bases and mound. Problem was that the ground condition was a disaster. Other 3 photos showed shots which I guesstimate yesterday in daylight hours showed the ground in a slightly better light. By the looks there was a a ride on roller working on the ground. Also showed crane truck working on netting. Also, instead of the 30 ft fence they said they were going to erect at the short porch at rightfield, they were stacking 40ft containers. Whilst I believe that the ground will be ready, no guarantee on the condition of the surface. (anyone got some spare green paint) Yeah that was me who posted up and questioned the condition of the ground, then 2 minutes later the photos were gone. What did they expect? Its a travesty to think a ground can be ready in a couple of days, let alone after a horse event. Wrong location me thinks, ive walked on that field when going to a show there and its small. Going to be very intimate. But yeah, the whole field needs to be relaid and cutouts suck for playing on, let alone at an elite level. SHame on the aces for cutting corners. Cutout a proper field and stop short changing the spectators.

Hi folks Been a while since I have visited the forum to catch up on things. Melbournnian's I wouldn't get to upset if all is not ready for the opening series. I can tell you that Bluetown and fort Narrabunda still had works going on pretty close to game time and over the next few weeks things will be tweaked. At least you guys have a good looking grass surface which is better than the beach behind home at BOP. I also hope you get the support similar to what the Cavalry had over the weekend. It was a great experience and when Sydney isn't at home and Cav's are I'll be heading down the Hume to watch.

Hey Bigal. Yeah and that was me that replied to your post on the other form of social media on your opinion of the ground. I didn't see you down there helping today. Maybe you are coming down tomorrow. Don't bother heading down tonight. The boys were a bit tired. They decided to knock off at 10:30. Yeah the ground need a lot of work. Yeah it will only get better as the weeks go on, but short cuts? You've got to be kidding me. The attention to detail by everyone down there in the 9 hours I was there was fantastic. I encourage everyone if they have some time tomorrow to get down there and help out. Kevin, the guy who's out from the US is doing a brilliant job with Blake and Fuzzy. It's a brilliant chace for all to get on board and make sure the first night in Melbourne gets off to a brilliant start.

Im not there because Im at work. Otherwise I would definetly consider it. But I think its just unprofessional for something that are calling professional baseball to be left in such a state to last minute and such a small ground. Im sure everyone is flat out knackers but it just doesnt seem kosher to ask the public for help.

Bigal. I know you're a fan of the game, but you can't call the opperation they have put in place unprofessional. The baseball public has been screaming out for years for a city based alternative to Altona that has excellent road and public transport access and we have gotten that in the Showgrounds. It's unfortunate that the venue got damaged last weekend, but you know what, sh!t happens. It was a very professional move to secure the venue. The grounds staff getting the place ready for opening day are as professional as they come. Anyway, I'm strating to rant, so I'll leave it at this.
I'm so disenchanted by a small minority of the Victorian Baseball community who sit back it their armchairs and throw stones at whatever developments are made to the game. We need this national league plan and simple. We know player numbers have been on the decline sice the last ABL folded and this is a brilliant stimulis to get people interested in the sport again. I don't care if the home ground is a horse paddock in Nar Nar Goon, and I care less of the opinion of others who continually rubbish the efforts of others without putting up their hands and offering to assist what problems maybe out there. This is the last chance to get this right or you can forget about ABL ver 3. If the field looks a bit patchy, or the paint hasn't dried, or the PA cuts out, or it takes you an extra 5mins to get to your seat or the food stand runs out of hotdogs or if the Aces win or loose... It doesn't matter. Embrace the fact that a national league is back in Melbourne and draw from the joy in knowing that this is the injection that our sport needs in this country regardless of your preconcieved ideas of what it should look like.
Good rant for a Thursday eh?

After now 4 12+ hour days the ground is looking good. Will surely be done by game time! For all those who doubt the condition if you saw it on mon morning and then saw it now you would be very surprised at how it's shaped up and how much work has gone into it. One big thing is rather then question about it and doubt and whatever else. Get in the car and come help!

Will all those poles in front of the stands be there for the games? Won't make for very good viewing angles.

Will all those poles in front of the stands be there for the games? Won't make for very good viewing angles. Ah yet another insightful positive comment... I'm sure you can find one seat out of the 4,300 available that will not have an interrupted sight line. Or perhpas we can take the poles and the nexxting out and have the crowd wearing foul balls in the chops instead... But then again, you might complain about that as well

The poles should be just fine for every seat.

The poles should be just fine for every seat. How about the weather for tonight (Fri)? Reckon we have a game on? The forcast looking a heck of a lot better than the other day. Should get it in. Not sure of the boys will take BP though Forecast for the rest of FridayCloudy periods. Early drizzle and patchy morning fog. Scattered showers developing during the afternoon and evening and the chance of a thunderstorm. Light winds and bayside seabreezes to 20 km/h developing in the afternoon.

I reckon tonight might be alright.
Tomorrow will be interesting. Sounds a bit intermittent, so whether it will miss Flemington during the arvo...

I gotta say, I was going to a car show at the Showgrounds yesterday, and i wandered over to have a look at the ground... laughed my head off when I saw one of the workers wandering around home plate wearing flippers....MC, I am with you..bring on the ABL, but, and a f4%^ing big BUT, This is the pinnicle of our sport... This ground in my opinion is an absolute disgrace ( right this minute ). As you stated, it looks like a back paddock in Nar Nar Goon. Can you see the Tokyo Giants allowing their players to even step foot ion this ground..possible lawsuits should anyone get an injury etc..... Positives.. Yes it has a minor league feel to it and you can put containers up as homerun fences and then HR's become legit shots.. It has the potential to be one of the better ball parks in Australia..But seriously, when you are 30 hours out from opening night, surely you would have an army of people helping out.. I saw 1 person there walk around for 40 mins, just looking, crossing his arms, looking like he was someone important..and my friends tell me he actually is someone of significance at the aces...shake yourself people.. this is the future of the sport that you all love.. and to see a rostered player and a coach ( whom I found out was later ), working, shows me how committed the players are... Anyway, good luck to the Aces tonite against Cavarlry.. I hope the rain stays away and you get to play.....

I'm in Moonee Ponds, which is about 3-4 mins to Showgrounds. We only got minimal couple mins sprinkles. Sun came back out straight away and droplets on car have dried up already. There was heavy thunder but just some sprinkles here

All's fine at the moment. Lots of thunder and also rain but it is well away from the showgrounds and is heading over northern suburbs. (Watsonia, Viewbank etc) Nearest danger band heading this way is currently around Daylesford, Ballan way. It will go close to here but hopefully we will be on the outskirts of it. Definitely will come close. It will have some effect, just not sure how much
