Aces assistant coach Tony Harris made an appearance at a Bayside club this week and he was a fantastic speaker with both the junior kids and the senior players.
His work with the players on the training track was first class as well.
Great appointment for the Aces

A great win by the Aces tonight at Brisbane with a score line of 5 - 3.
Solid outing for young Thorpe who pitched a very mature game and basically controlled the game. Good relief and Erasmus(?) who closed out the game.
Four Home runs provided the offense from Harman, Schlehuber, Huber and Davies. Ground fielding was sharp and looked good.
Tonight a very professional effort from the Aces, who on this showing must be a chance to gain that very elusive away series win in Brisbane.

A complete, confidence-building game by the Aces. One that augurs well for the rest of this series and beyond.
Off-field, there seem still to be issues. For example, the match report on the Melbourne website is credited to "Staff Writer, Melbourne Aces".
No. The report was written by Benjamin Scott for the Brisbane Bandits. It should be credited as such. I don't know the bloke, but I expect that Scott will be unimpressed, as he should be.
We may expect this plagiaristic rubbish to happen in other online places (well, one in particular), but it is not at all becoming for a Melbourne Aces organisation that has been taken to task on previous occasions for acting in a similarly unethical manner.

My thoughts of the conduct in which Melbourne Aces management practice is pretty well documented. My biggest concern is that the detail of the plageritsic practices of the Aces was clearly brought to the attention of the management, in-adequately rectified, then flippantly dismissed. It should be of no surprise this has occurred again. Little does the management know (probably til now) that there is an excellent copy write lawyer within Victorian baseball circles. I'm sure he would be flabbergasted that the Aces management 'didn't heed their first warning'
The late great Ernie Jones had a brilliant saying. 'You tell normal people once, dumb b&stards twice, and d!ckheads three times. Don't be a d!ckhead'

I have to agree with MC15, for the past two series the writers have listed John Hussey as a hitter in their series review, I tweeted them both times saying this wasn't correct! The replies I got back saying he was just proves the point, it wasn't until I tweeted back and included the Chairman that the articles suddenly got updated and only listed John as a pitcher.

MC15 something that I find disappointing is the lack of ownership the club has decided it has when it comes to a mistake on their part.
For the article I wrote on Freddy Flores, it went up under a staff members name, and then the next day was changed to 'Staff Writer'. I let the situation go as there was a home series that weekend. The person who had their name in the byline initially while the club was promoting the article on social media wouldn't look at me for the entire series. Our GM wouldn't either. I'd have thought that one of them may have approached me and apologised and admitted their error.
Silly me.
The following Monday I emailed the club, and the GM pleaded ignorance to the articles existence, and while the by-line was changed, which I appreciated, there was again not even the slightest hint of an apology. When I said in good conscience I couldn't continue writing, the GM turned around and banned me from the clubs streaming media broadcasts, for which I had volunteered at least a fortnight before a staff member from the club approached me to compile series previews for the clubs website.
I do hope that the coming Sydney series sees an apology or two come my way, albeit belatedly. Otherwise, maybe I should get that name off you.

It would seem that you aren't alone in being plagiarised Stu. It seems they do it to all and sundry going by the above examples. Karma will get them eventually, let's hope we are around to see it!

Powerful win by the Aces this evening.
Great pitching and impeccable defence (by both sides).
How good is catcher Ryan Casteel, with another couple of bombs?

Great win by the Aces 6 - 2.
Excellent start from Joe Burns and good hitting from the batters. It was nice to see a Justin Huber Home run. Also Casteel just keeps getting better. Schlehuber hit safely yet again tonight and remains impressive.
This is going to be a great series if tonight was anything to go by.

Just read the preview for this weekends games against the Heat, not sure why but they have listed two different roster in the article for the Aces, maybe it's a cut and paste article but you think they would read it before posting. Not the first time it has happened either!

The rosters don't quite match up, do they? Is Adam Bright going, or not?
It's enough to give Aces supporters "a fit". Like the Perth Heat might "give the Aces a fit if Melbourne's pitching doesn't do its part".
A "fit"? An odd expression in the context.....

watching the game yesterday at a windswept Altona ( thats another story )when there was a play early in the game where the ball popped up looking to go foul until wind blew it back into play. Pitcher attemepted to make the catch but missed it. however, it hit his glove in fair territory and went foul..catcher picked up ball and tagged runner. Umpires said it was foul. it was a farce the way the decision was made. young pitcher pleading his case and the thrid base umpire trying to enforce his "autority" on the kid. How they got this play wrong is beyond me. It was obvious the ball hit the pitchers glove nbecause no ball no matter ho much backspin the ball has would not change direction that significantly. It looked to me like a hometown decision. Lucky it actually had no effect on the game in the end.. Get it right umps and you wont cop the crap you are always recieving.. And someone just tell the third base umpire that without the players, he has no part time job..

It's been quiet in this discussion for a time, but let's give credit where it is due.
While it will remain a challenge for the Aces to make the playoffs (a task that will come down to the Sydney series next week), you have to admire the spirit in which the team has played and the outstanding individual performances of late.
Brad Harman, Brett Zawacki, Eric Marzec, Jared Schlehuber, Ryan Casteel and John Hussey....take a bow for your dead-set heroics against Brisbane this weekend. Joe Burns for a consistently outstanding season, Tyler Massey for timely brilliance in recent weeks and all others for chipping in at various times.
If this squad can stay together and make the post-season with the momentum that is going, anything can happen. A huge crowd at Laverton tonight and there is a real groundswell of support that just might become a pivotal point in Aces (and thereby league) development.
It will be unfortunate if there is truth to the rumour that the US players will be going home next week.

On behalf of 'The Hangar' members who were part of the Scott Wearne sponsorship this season, I would like to thank ground announcer Roger Sidhom for his efforts in assisting with the auction for the signed jersey tonight. Many thanks to those who bid, and to the eventual winner who I understand was from the Jet Couriers organisation.
A special thank you to the players and staff who took the time to sign the jersey before the auction. Your assistance in helping raise extra funds was most appreciated.
In the end, $500 was donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. Again, many thanks to all concerned.

Thanks to everyone who has supported us this season. Whilst there has been some inconsistency to our on field performances I want to express my support to all of the players who have represented the Aces this season. The passion may not have been evident to all but as a coach who has seen plenty over the last 30+ years I do not hesitate to say that this group DOES have a passion & respect for the game, a love for the Melbourne Aces, and an appreciation of the fan & supporter base. We will be playing our heart out next series in Sydney to bring us into playoff contention. Win or lose let me say to anyone caring enough to read this post that I am proud to be a coach on this 2013/14 Aces team and to any critics, it's your right to criticise but please understand that this game, at this level, is not always easy. Thanks to everyone who shares that same passion, when we win we appreciate that we are sharing the spoils of victory with you, when we lose it's a lonely place. I look forward to this upcoming series with an excitement that comes from meaningful competition......what will be will be.

Good luck to the Aces as they take on Sydney with a playoff berth on the line. I am sure there will be plenty of people watching the games and riding the ups and downs with the team throughout the coming four days.
Disappointing that the club has not even bothered to acknowledge to members and fans that Eric Marzec has gone home and is already in America. Regardless, I am sure I will not be the only one following his progress through the Brewers organisation in 2014 and beyond.
Finally, before the season, I noted that Makoto Aiuchi, one of the Japanese imports we were burdened with from Seibu, had been caught driving without a drivers license and for speeding before coming out to Australia.
Since he got back however...
The Seibu Lions held a press conference at their offices in Tokorozawa today to announce that they suspended nineteen-year-old pitcher Makoto Aiuchi for underage smoking and drinking. The suspension will last for six months. His punishment will also likely include a strict curfew and a ban from wearing the team uniform. He is scheduled to attend spring camp, but will likely be assigned to separate workouts with the Ni-gun players.
According to Nikkan Sports, the Lions received an anonymous tip about Aiuchi having a drink via their website on the 14th. When team officials asked the nineteen-year-old about the reported incident, he said it was true and added that he drank alcohol on a number of different occasions with friends in Tokyo in November and December last year. He also admitted to smoking.
(taken from Yakyubaka) *the minimum drinking and smoking age in Japan is 20. Aiuchi will turn 20 in July.

Brisbane's win tonight and what looks like a Perth win over Adelaide does keep the Aces hopes alive going into the final day.
All the best to the coaches and players for Sunday's match. There's a fair few fans back in Melbourne who wish they could be there to cheer the team on but they'll all be following the game and hoping the result is a positive one.
Good Luck!

Thank you to the players and coaches for their time and effort they put in to the Melbourne Aces campaign for the 2013/14 Claxton Shield season. While it was a case of 'almost', the season was a vast improvement from last season, and your efforts were not unnoticed, and should not go unmentioned.
As a club member, I do call on the club to complete a full review of the season, and of the club in general. I noted two seasons ago that we had finished under .500 for two straight seasons, and asked the question what would happen if the club did it three seasons in a row. Now, we can upgrade it to a run of four straight seasons under .500 and in twenty-five sojourns interstate, the club has yet to win a series and has won just four weekend series of the past twenty-four. So far, from the outside looking in, it doesn't seem much has been done, though I am sure some work has been done away from the members and supporters eyes, though I do contend not every stone was turned over in trying to achieve the ultimate success this season.
The review does need to cover every position from the board, the GM and all the way down and needs to be thorough, honest, and most of all, incorporate action items which are acted upon.
While three teams are still playing off for the Shield, there is no reason why a review, and preparation for next season cannot begin now.

That's a good take on Baseball at Altona. Pity she couldn't come to Adelaide and give an appraisal of the commentary there, talk about making mistakes and mangling names etc. Adelaide's guy has it down pat!

Had to laugh at the comment about the cheerleaders. I really wish they would do away with them, it really is cringe worthy most of the time.

Cringeworthy indeed, dans.
I'm glad I'm not the only person who feels that way.
More than that, considering that a modest figure of $ 1500 is being bandied around as the cost of Summer of Baseball (NSW) streaming and commentating the Preliminary Final series, you have to wonder what the hell some of the spending priorities in this league actually are.
When the Aces played the finals series in Perth a couple of years ago, they took the dancing girls but couldn't afford (they said) to take the pitching coach.
Odd.
