Well, we have made it to the finals. There are some very good match ups as you would expect and I think in both grades there is a definite favourite, however ever side seems to be in with a shot.
A Grade A great season as far as I'm concerned, 5 teams with a chance at finals before the last round is played, with 5th place missing by half a game. Research have been a mainstay of the top 2 all season, Heathmont have not been far away either. Lets see where these games are won.
Research vs Heathmont - Results this season, 1 win each, Research have outscored Heathmont by 9 runs. Research earned the home final, but this may suit both teams with the short fence. Last time they played here Research ran away with a 10 run win! When you look at their list, they have smooth skills in the field, strong pitching depth and some very good hitters. They would enter this contest extremely confident that if they are able to play a solid game, they will win. McKay named to start which I like, he is a big reason Research have been strong over the past few season with his ability to shut sides down. If he can get through 6 for less than a run an inning it is Research by how much. Heathmont also have some serious power in their lineup, but I think they will struggle to hold back the hitters of Research. This game could result in a few HR's, I think Research will win and move in to the GF and another shot at the premiership.
Ringwood vs GMBC - Results this season, Ringwood with 1 win and the other game was a wash out. Two power clubs going head to head, Ringwood with 5 senior teams in the finals, Monty with 6. Monty look to have an edge in depth for this game (looking at the team lists). Ringwood have progressed well this year and are a big chance of moving through the finals with wins against all the other finalist. Bright named on the hill will need to be at his best to shut down the powerful hitting lineup of Monty. At the same time , Monty are going to need to be very smooth in the field to stop Ringwood. This game could be a flip of the coin, but Ringwood have, in my opinion, shown more consistent form to go through to another week with a possible local match up in the prelim.
B Grade This has been one of the closest seasons for a long time with Westgarth clearly on top, but the next 4 teams separated by only 1 game. Not only that, but all teams from 2nd to 4th finished on the same points and 4th won more games than 2nd and 3rd...(got that). I think the final standings are a true reflection of the season for these teams. Westgarth have been the best team all season, Rebels also have been the second best team this season, while Waverley and Ringwood should have been 3rd and 4th. FH still unlucky to be missing the finals, but the top four seems right to me.
Westgarth vs North Coburg Rebels - Results so far this season, Westgarth with 1 win, a wash out for the other game (I think, 0 - 0 score). Westgarth are the best side in B Grade this season. They have all bases covered for fielding, pitching and hitting. They have leg speed and use it well. Their only danger is having a 'bad' day IMO. They lost 1 game for the year (against Waverley) but have been pushed at different times throughout the season, only to flex their collective 'muscle' and continue to put sides away. Rebels picked up some very handy players this season and this has helped them not only be competitive, but become a legitimate chance at the GF and once there, who knows. Masa is the key, how long can he pitch and keep the Garth off base? If he can throw 7+ innings of 1 run ball, Rebels will find themselves in a GF. If Garth get to Masa early, I am not sure Rebels can cover the longer game. Should be a good game, but Garth to get up.
Waverley vs Ringwood - Results this season, Waverley 2 wins. Waverley were in A Grade a couple of years ago and have a very similar side to then. I suppose Page will start and why not when he has done a good job most of the season. Waverley are the only side to beat Westgarth this season and would fancy their chance not only against Ringwood this week, but whom ever they face next week (should they make it). Ringwood will need to be at their best, but cannot be discounted. If their young pitchers can hold Waverley down, you would expect that their hitters could score a few runs. Based on previous results between them, you pick Waverley, but don't be surprised if Ringwood make the A Grade and B Grade Preliminary Finals next week.
Some great match ups here with a lot to prove for each club. The four best sides in both Grades all season playing off against one another, but to coin a phrase from one of my favourite movies "There can be only one" (corny I know, but hey, it is finals time)
Good luck

Fantastic win by the NC Rebels today over Westgarth in B Grade.
Down 7-3 top of 9 they put 5 across the go 8-7 up and then Masa shut them down.
Great 'never say die' effort by Dave and the boys !
Our 3s lost 6-4 to Heathmont in D2.

DBA A4 - Bonbeach beat Berwick around 15-4. Too many errors for Berwick in the fourth, who entered the innings with the lead but gave up a double-digit number.
A3 looked like Bonbeach were winning, but not sure how it finished.
A2 - Chelt beat Berwick - not sure of the score.

A relief for players and administrators across the state to get a favourable day to start winter finals after what we have copped in recent times. No venue was more pleasant than Geelong Baseball Centre, where the lower grades played their first round of finals under clear skies. All looks promising for a huge day tomorrow (Sunday), with the playing of A Grade and B Grade Semi-Finals - all starting at 1.00 PM. www.geelongassociation.baseball.com.au

Good day overall for us at Ringwood with the big boys winning on a walk off strikeout against GMBC in the 10th or 11th. A reserves won as well and go straight through to their GF, we beat Waverley for the first time since having a B Grade side as well. The B res lost.

What's a walk off strike out? Loaded bases, two out, scores tied, ball hits the dirt which was apparently swung at, runner on third made it home on the wild pitch, Nath Aron just got to first. Game over with a walk off strike out.

Guild heads directly to the GBA Grand Final with its 9-4 Second Semi-Final win over Lara this afternoon, while Saints put Deakin out of contention with a massive 13-2 result decided in seven (well, effectively decided in the first, when Saints blasted six). In B Grade semis, Guild ended the season for Werribee Vets with a 24-9 cakewalk - remarkably the same scoreline as in the Mounties/Colac game, with the Mounts taking a direct route to the Grand Final and Colac getting a second chance against Guild. www.geelongassociation.baseball.com.au

In the Bendigo League congratulations to Falcons Baseball Club today taking out the B and C Grade Premierships. Outstanding play by both teams.
In A Grade Falcons came into the day one down in a best of three finals series. After a very closely contested game last week, Falcons came out with their bats firing. Falcons took out game 2 15-0. We all meet again next Sunday for Game 3.

Both Bonbeach A3 AND A4 won on Saturday. I believe the score line was 17-4 in the A4 game and 15-4 in the A3 game.

Why is it some clubs don't stay after the game for at least 1 drink, both teams on Saturday from different clubs didn't bother to enter the clubrooms after the game. Also 1 club who won didn't even bother signing the match card.
Very dissapointing........

Traralgon won the right to play against Churchill next week with a 7-3 win in the A grade against Moe. Moe won the B grade game to play Traralgon next week with a 7-2 win over Churchill, while Churchill won the C grade Premiership 16-4 over Traralgon.

2 grades were decided in the Bendigo Baseball Association yesterday, with the A grade forced to a 3rd week.
In the C grade Falcons were able to defeat Strath Dodgers 10-6. It was very close to begin with, with Dodgers taking an early lead until the Falcons were able to score 6 runs in the 4th to take the lead which they didnt reliquish from there.
In the B grade a great pitchers duel was played before Falcons were able to win 7-5 over the Dodgers again. It was Warren Attard for Falcons and Col Pithie for Dodgers who held both offenses in check. With the win the Falcons took the GF series 2-0 to win the flag.
In the A grade the Falcons again were able to defeat the Dodgers 15-0, to tie the GF series 1-1 and force a 3rd game. Falcons came out early scorng in both the 1st and 2nd dig, before taking control with 6 in the 3rd off the back of some uncharatcheristic errors by the Dodgers to score 6 and take a 9-0 lead. Falcons started Troy Waterman was not overpowering but was able to hold the Dodgers strong offensive game in check. So for the A grade next week a simple do-or-die game for both teams and will be a great game to watch!
Finally, the BBA also had their 2012 awards night on Friday with the following taking out the awards (apologies as there are some details I cannot remember)
C Grade: - MVP & Batting award - Chris Tieman (Bendigo East)
B grade - MVP, Batting award & fielding award - Jonathon Van Der Hagen (Falcons) - Runner-u MVP - Matt Gould (Bendigo East) - Umpires award - Bree Natoli (Dodgers) - Coaches Award - Keenan Jack (Scots) & Mark Cruse (Dodgers)
A Grade - MVP & Pitching award - Troy Waterman (Falcons) - Runner-up MVP - Aaron Sherrif (Bendigo East) & Nathan Healey (Falcons) - Batting Award - Nathan Larson (Falcons) - Umpires award - Geoff Holland (Dodgers) - Coaches Award - Geoff Hollad (Dodgers) & Johnathon Taylor (Scots) - Rookie of the year - Josh Cruse (Dodgers) - Golden Gloves - C: Brad Muns (Falcons), 1B: James Clow (East), 2B: James Frasca (East), 3B: Kirby Moon (Falcons), SS: Cam Taylor (East), LF: Neil Smith (Dodgers), CF: Nick Whatley (Dodgers), RF: Dan Plowright (Falcons) - Senior Rep Player of the Year - Josh Cruse (Dodgers)
Finally, we had 2 inductees into the Hall of Fame. I cannot remember the first (my apologies and will add when I know), with Terry Smith being the 2nd. Terry has been a massive servant of the BBA for many years and his induction is much deserved!

If you really must know the Ringwood boys all had a function to get too after the game with junior preso on that evening and our vote count also. Normally we always hang around for a beer in which we did this time once again we just didn't all come up. Sorry to upset everyone in such a small way.

How exciting has the MWBL finals series been so far??
ALL A1, A2 and B1 games have been decided by a run and nearly all in the last. One of the two B2 results was also decided by a run and there was a significant number of one run games in the lower grades. Awesome stuff!
A couple of cracking B grade games are scheduled for tomorrow at Deep Creek Res (Doncaster's ground).
Ringwood take on Westgarth in B1 and Forest Hill also take on Westgarth in B2.
I will leave the predictions up to experts like The Jack, besides, my opinion will be fairly biased, but I would encourage you to get down to the ground and watch a couple of great games.
Hopefully the weather holds out for us.
Oh and thanks to the umpires.

WOW were there some results last week with arguably the top two sides in both A and B Grades losing and now facing elimination both against Ringwood sides. Waiting for them next week are Heathmont and North Coburg Rebels who have each been strong teams all season and now have the shot at the ultimate reward. Lets look at the games.
A Grade
Research vs Ringwood - Previous results, 1 win each, the last game was the last for the season where there was some controversy in who Ringwood had pitch - This is a tough game to predict. Both sides have great hitting line ups and solid pitching rotations. Research have a very intimidating hitting line up with both Dicker brothers, Edwards, Davies, Bride and a rampant Locklier (did he go out this season, he was on fire!!). Their infield looks smooth and with McKay on the hill to start are a serious threat to winning this week and finishing off what they began with the minor premiership. Ringwood also have some serious hitters in Harman and Aron and with Daykin, Smoke, Unland and Cheesman providing key hits, they also look very good. Bright named to start, after working his way back through B Grade, he worked hard against Monty last week with Ringwood getting on top. So who wins this? I don't know. If McKay throws better than Bright, Research win, if it is the other way around, Ringwood win. Ring have extra throwers and hitter available with their reserves having a week off, maybe this is the edge? This game is absolutely worthy of a Preliminary final (if not a Grand Final!) and I predict that the winner of this game will win the whole thing. People want tips, so I pick Ringwood because there can not be a draw, tough to pick though!!
B Grade Westgarth vs Ringwood - Previous results, 2 wins to Westgarth, the first one comfortable, the next a bit closer - Westgarth have to be favourites for this game, they have been the best side all year, they deserve to win the Grand Final, they deserve the promotion to A Grade next year and should they lose either this week or next I still think they should apply for promotion such has been their dominance of the B Grade competition this season. They have a few guys who can throw, I think they will start Reeves and if they can shut down Ringwood early they will make it very difficult for them to come back. Hitters like Deeble, Pawley, Legge and Huryn can set the tone early and with Drinkwater always a threat to hit 'The Jack', Ringwood will need to be sharp early. Ringwood were probably not given much hope against Waverley and from reports did a good job at applying pressure in most innings either in the field or the box. They will need Rogers, Legg and Johnson firing with the bat and support from the younger players. They do seem to have a number of their A res players on their list, does this make them a tougher ask than normal? Westgarth have their reserves playing the early game, this means they can only use re-entries, whereas Ring have the luxury of extra 'bench' players. Kingston named to start, he will need to be very good early. Where is this game won, well obviously with runs scored, but the edge will go to the side that is stronger in defense, but the best start by a pitcher will win this game. If Westgarth can get to Kingston and score 4 or 5 before he comes out, they can give up a couple and still be relatively safe. If Ringwood can score 2 or 3 runs in the first 3 - 4 innings and keep The Garth to 1 or less, they may hang on with Leggy finishing off the game. As said previously, Garth are the odds on favourites, but, don't count out Ringwood if their form from the last few weeks can continue. Based on previous results, the winner of this game would be the favourite for next week as well IMO.
With not many games on this week, do yourself a favour and get to one of these grounds for at least the late game (the early games should be good as well) if you are not playing yourself. If Ringwood are able to win both, I wonder what the response will be with them having A, A res and B Grades all in the GF. Not sure who the umpires are this week as they are not named yet, lets wish them luck and hope they do not need to decide the game.
Good luck if you are lucky enough to still be playing.
