Big series coming up for the Melbourne Aces, who start the Perth quartet of matches 2.5 games behind Adelaide, 1.5 behind Perth and 1.0 behind Sydney, with Brisbane 2.5 games behind in fifth place, but with a home series against Canberra that looks on paper an easier assignment than facing a Perth team who just dominated Sydney in Sydney last week.
As far as I can tell, Jeff Jamnick is off the roster, and has been replaced by Essendon's import pitcher David Whigham.
Aces Roster (unofficial)
Adam Blackley Adam Bright Blake Cunningham Brad Hertzler Tetsuya Nishikawa Shane Lindsay Russell Spear David Whigham Greg Wiltshire Nick Martin David Miller
Grant Karlsen Tristan McDonald
James Beresford Josh Davies Justin Huber Matt Lawman Glenn Mascoll Scott Wearne
Elliott Biddle Andrew Russell Paul Rutgers
Perth's roster includes a slight Melbourne flavour, with American left-handed pitcher Trevor Caughey having pitched for the Ormond-Glenhuntly Hunters back in 07/08 (from memory). Australian and Minnesota Twin Luke Hughes will make the trip while pitcher Matt Zachery was a co-recipient of Player of the Week honours for his seven shut out innings against Sydney last week. No surprise that Tom Brice was a co-winner of the award for his efforts last week (.563 av 4 hr 10rbi).
Heat Roster (unofficial)
Liam Baron Ben Moore Dean White Brendan Wise Cole McCurry Warwick Saupold Daniel Schmidt Ben Grice Cam Lamb Matt Zachery Matt Krueger
Allan De San Miguel Matt Kennelly
Aaron Bonomi Mitch Graham Robbie Widlansky Ryne Price Lachlan Dale Luke Hughes Evan McArthur
Ronnie Welty Tim Kennelly
Looking forward to an enjoyable four gamer series and some good baseball.

Just wondering how the weather is going to be for the games. Heard there is a lot of rain predicted.

Slammer,
Accorting to the BOM...
Thurs: Rain at Times. 27 Fri: Rain. Windy. (yes, that's all they say) 27 Sat: A little drizzle clearing. 26
For all those lamenting club ball washouts, it rains all the way up until Sunday, where the forecast is Sunny and 26.

Can't see the coaches risking him if he wasn't right Big Time, and as I understand it, you have to play in two series to be eligible for the finals, so it may be a case of getting as many hands on deck so we have as many options as possible come finals time.
Jamnick's effort last Sunday, hamstring soreness or no, was bad, and another option may be what the coaches are after for the finals.

From the radar, it looks as if the major rain will have passed come 3pm, and I'd think 4pm at the latest. After that, its bare drizzle left. www.bom.gov.au/products/IDR023.loop.shtml#skipThey'd be wanting to get a game in tonight for sure. Double headers back to back don't seem too inviting, and I'm not sure if Sunday allows any time for a game before the Perth boys head home (am guessing they're not on a red-eye on Saturday night after the second of the double-header). Provided the cut-outs have been covered, I'd suggest we're a chance if the rain stops inside the next 90-120 minutes.

IIRC, he was made unavailable for ACES duties earlier in the season.

No word form the Aces as to what state the ground is in.
One would have to consider it highly unlikely to go ahead.

Am now hearing that it has been rescheduled for MIDDAY on Sunday.
Surely such a contingency would have been spoken about during the week and time agreed to before the Perth squad arrived?

They may be talking earlier s they may need to fit in a double header. Tonight's weather looking shaky too.

Am now hearing that it has been rescheduled for MIDDAY on Sunday. Surely such a contingency would have been spoken about during the week and time agreed to before the Perth squad arrived? It's amazing stu how often people who start statements with "surely" have the ability of hindsite... There were no games scheduled so I'm tipping the were flying out that morning. So the start time would be tied in with their new flight time. Reorganising flights for about 30 people on a Sunday is not an easy task Cut them a bit of slack mate

Agreed re the flights MC - it's hard enough for one person to be rescheduled sometimes.
Regardless of when the game is rescheduled to, I will be there supporting the team, but the communication of this wasn't too good. Last night it was 1.30 - not a tentative scheduling, but 1.30 - lock it in Eddie.
Now, the time has changed. I recognise and respect there is an issue with the shuffling of flights among other things, but a timing of Sunday - start time 'to be confirmed Friday 14/01' would have been better than providing a time, and then changing it, with the communication being a passing comment on a facebook page.
I'm prepared to cut the entire league some slack over the first year MC, so no dramas there, however my suggestion is, the communication of the rescheduled start time wasn't handled in the best manner possible.

Unless the field is unplayable, we should be right for tonight.
The radar is clear and there's four hours for the ground crew to get everything in order and for the field to dry out.
I think we'll have baseball tonight. :-)

Was at the game tonight! Must confess after the 1st innings, which as all slather and whack from both sides the game settled down to a good contest until the sixth frame. At this time the Aces changed their starter pitch Tetsuya Nishikawa, though shaky in the 1st innings had pitched well for frames 2 through 5. For what ever the reasons the change was made by the Aces manager, it once again exposed the Achilles heel of the Aces team, being the lack of depth of their bull pen. Even their much heralded and extremely talented Bright struggled and was eventually hooked from the game. With the pitching under the Kosh from the 6th innings, the offense which until that time had been doing well went to sleep and was well held by the Heat pitchers. From that time it was like watching the Titanic heading for the iceberg, knowing just what the final outcome would be. It is a scenario that Aces fans are becoming too used to seeing and one not likely to change much for the rest of the season. Do not deserve to make the play offs at this stage and unless challenged by the Bandits will only be there to make up the numbers . Neil W

Not a good start in game 2 - Greg only lasting 0.2 of the 1st inning. Already up to our 4th pitcher, down 9 - 4

All hands on deck.......Image taken at the Saturday afternoon game. Robbie Widlansky (12) has just hit a home run (one of many for the series) to also score Allan de San Miguel. Grant Karlsen is the Aces catcher. Easy one first. Is that a hand behind Karlsen? If so, whose? OK, that's easy, as I said. Now. One of the Perth players wears the red, white and black batting gloves, the other the grey version. What's going on here with their hands? Are they both contortionists or something?

Hey KC Karlsen is holding his glove in his right hand and is adjusting his pants from behind. Number 12 is wearing the white, red and black gloves, his right arm is bent at the elbow to quite an acute angle. The greyish glove belongs to the hand of the player behind number 12, his left arm is almost directly behind number 12's arm. They are actually at least 2 feet apart.

Ah, pretty good TJ. But "holding his glove in his right hand and is adjusting his pants from behind"? Maybe, but I doubt it. It would be an odd grip to have on the glove if you were holding it with your right hand (although balancing the glove on your thumb while you used your left hand for another purpose is plausible and reasonably commonplace for a catcher now that I cast my mind back). I thought maybe it was a batting glove hanging out of his back pocket. I'm not sure. The image makes you realise the tricks that can be played on our eyes. Yep, Widlansky was wearing the red and white gloves. Foreshortening and the angle of his right arm create the odd effect. And, yeah, the bearded one was wearing the grey and was some distance behind (though probably not two metres). Photo of the Week? Yeah, it gets my vote, but I bet they won't bloody give it to me (just when I could use the weekly cash prize ;D)! I'll probably go through the whole season and won't get a gong! Sheeesh......

266 attendance was poor but understandable considering:-
(1) how they have played all series (2) the weather was hot and there's no shade to sit in. (3) the local club competition had resumed after the Christmas break and most would have planned to attend due to the fact that there was no game scheduled for Sunday in this series.
