Port Melbourne is CBD. Would take some work to get the ground to competition standard but this could be done I think. The club is currently talking with council about lights & other upgrades to ground & facilities.

From our end Preston has everything ready and we have done all possible to make it happen, paperwork done, quotes, etc all we need is the ABL to commit. They say it would be a 6 week process for the upgrades so someone needs to make a decision.

From the perspective of location, its certainly ideal with good access from all directions (albeit slow with peak hour).

Tellin you guys the show grounds is a done deal, the paper work was signed on Friday.
And I hear Dandy council is livid at the money they spent on plans and proposals after being told by the ABL they were a sure thing.

I would have thought 14km from the CBD was pretty central.

Peak hour to get to Preston for one of the Aces games was close to 2hrs... The distance may not be too far but the roads leading to your beautiful grounds are nutse. Mind you I don't know if the showgrounds would be any better.

The showgrounds line is only open for special events. is the ABL going to be special enough? There is a tram line though...

Surely they would open it! Wouldn't cost a hell of a lot i wouldnt think. Or they could do it like the train at this time leaving Southern Cross will stop and one coming back will stop there. Out of these times its up to individuals to tram it.

I'm not sure how many times the forum members have to open the where to host the Aces games can of worms.,We all know each of us wants it in our back yard, people, suck it up. The games will be where it is best for the ABL and the broader baseball community, so suggestions have definately already been canvassed. Lets all get behind the showgrounds. The fragmenting of the support behind the venue suggestions has been going on for months and ultimately hasn't helped the process

Why not run with a Dandenong/Showgrouds arrangement? If the majority of rusted on baseball nuts REALLY are out in the sth east, midweek games could be played at a botique 500-1500 seat stadium with minimal corparate and entertainment facilities. Just a comfortable place to watch a ballgame on a Wed/Thur night and then drive home in 15 to 20 mins. A purists park.. As for the showgrounds, with a couple of short porches, a more intimate setting and generally a more electric atmosphere, weekends would be the time. Somewhere you could drag a few friends along to, have a drink and then continue onto the city for the night.

I'm pretty sure that PT to Showgrounds: Craigieburn line to Kensington/Newmarket, 500-1000m walk to venue. I would not expect the trains servicing the showgrounds until people beyond baseball fans know the league exists. Maybe 11/12.

The showgrounds line is only open for special events. is the ABL going to be special enough? There is a tram line though... This interests me too. The train operators are having enough trouble running their network. They usually open the Showgrounds station for LARGE events (eg, 100k people at the show, races, big day out etc). If the stadium capacity is 5k, will they open the station?

My suggestion..... Thursday night @ Geelong because of the locality, i would think that the geelong people would come in their droves.. Friday / Saturday night at Showgrounds...
I think you would find that if a thursday night game was scheduled for the SG, I dont think it would have as much an impact as if it were in Geelong..
Frid / Sat in the city would get better crowd support....
Only my observation

If the trains don't go to Showgrounds, it would reduce the crowd significantly.
40 mins on a train beats 2 hours in a car, plus parking/petrol costs.
The regional week night idea has merit - but would MLB agree to that?
It would be good to have a game at Geelong for the western suburbs, and one in the SE, with the weekend games central.

I first read this as though you ment Dandenong Showgrounds and i was wondering why suggestoins were being made. Soon worked out after i read on in the same post. hmmm I do like the idea of having satellite venues. I guess it would be great to have the flexibility of La trobe, Dandenong, Geelong and the showgrounds but it would be alot of work for individuals and clubs alike to set up for one night every 2 weeks. Keep it at the same place and i believe Bobs Ya Uncle!

I think you could be on to something there skinny, even though I would rather all games to be held in Melbourne so I could go and watch. You would probably get more people to a Thursday night game in Waurne Ponds than in Melbourne if it were to become a permanent fixture. In Melbourne, we have a lot of Thurs' night distractions and baseball (summer) commitments, training, committees, coaching, etc. and if broadcasted games helped to negate the "bums on seats" theorum then (apart from atmosphere at the ground) it would be a good thing to overcome the tyranny of distance and reward GBA for their consistent efforts to produce not only one of the best facility's in Australia but some of the best baseballers Australia has produced. Is it financially viable to get the whole circus to come to town? Well, there is a whole other consideration. I still think you're on to something.

Trains already run out to the showgrounds each day. They open it up for small events out there all the time just a mater of organising the dates and possible numbers. All this info from a worker at Metro. plus i hear that the deal has been done on the show grounds and are waiting for the show to annonce it.

If that's true (announcing location at the show) I like the idea. That's a huge opportunity to get the word out.
I hope that's what the delay is about. Got the impression they were expecting to announce a while ago. Was starting to think something fell through.

The thing is this has been dragged out far too long, with some cloak-and-dagger type negotiations.
Its seems deals have been made for La Trobe and Dandenong, with the proviso the deal with the Showgrounds doesnt go ahead, but its all hearsay and secondary info.
C'mon Aces, let everyone know where its at, and if a deal has been signed get it announced ASAP. Then you got a chance to market this thing before the first home game, and get those bums on seats that MLB is asking for!!!
Now for myself, Im an out of towner who would go to as many Aces games as I can, but I gotta know where I gotta get to!!

Welcome aboard, bushman.
We all share your frustration over the announcement of a venue, though I think that "cloak and dagger" negotiations is stretching it a bit.
The Aces and ABL have looked at 35 possible locations for the Victorian team. The associated uncertainty has been far from ideal for anyone, including potential members and supporters of the Aces club.
As a betting person, my money is on an announcement being made this week, with the Showgrounds favoured as the Aces' long-term home.

I've said it being cloak-and-dagger as there seem to be negoitations with about 5 different locations, but very little transparency in the overall process. Probably is the frustration cming out tho.....
