I've had the privilege of making good relationships with umpires throughout the years. Those relationships grew and grew as I went through high school. I was a catcher so i got to meet all the umpires and create relationships.
I understand why there are very few umpires out there, especially with the recent posts from a Div 3 game. These officials are getting yelled at constantly by players and coaches and the main reason officials do what they do is not for the money, it's for the fun and being able to be around the sport they love. Instead of coaches being kind to these people, they get yelled at when something doesn't go in that person's favor.
Younger guys and girls if they are looking for a way to make a little cash they take up umpiring. The issue is they get yelled at once or twice and they quit. They don't want to have people yelling at them. With people yelling all over the place at a young person what does that make someone think? If someone is constantly mad and arguing why would you want to continue doing that?
The next game you have this coming weekend. Remember what the umps are really there for. Yes, they are there to enforce laws and rules and keep people safe while playing a sport they enjoy. Don't get on an umpire when something goes wrong for your team. Teach the young people and teach others around you that being an official is difficult the way it is now add on the fact of someone yelling at you all day long that is just a recipe for disaster. How would you like it if someone from the outside came in and told you how to do your job? Guaranteed you wouldn't take kindly to that so why would you go and yell at those volunteering their time when they could be doing something else and not be yelled at.
Baseball Officials are a dying thing. Many states are begging people to become baseball officials because of the low numbers. BV does nothing for umpire development, nothing at all for the future of umpires in the game. Its left entirely up to the people at BUAV.
Getting on here and bad mouthing umps is weak as piss. Either ring Stewart Howe or front up and umpire yourself. Either way i couldn't give a s&&t about your umpire problems, especially when i see dickheads yelling at a 60 year old man umpiring a game he loves and doing his best.
