Stuart, the ABL's closed door policy has too often kept faithful fans in the dark.
One issue, though, which could be stopping the list coming out is that many players are still occupied with their season abroad. I'd say plenty of players are still not at a point to decide on their availability, which keeps things on pause for a while.

The playing list will take some time to finalise, given uncertainty over various players - including draft nominees, likely to be a mixed bag of individuals.
I believe that announcement of a support coaching panel is imminent. It will be a far smaller game day management group than has been the case in the past. Quality rather than quantity might be the go.
Good luck to them all. This will be a pivotal season for the Aces. One that may have direct bearing on the future of the league.

KC,
The overall 35-man roster will take some time to put together, there is no doubt about that, however there is a restricted/protected list that was to be submitted to the ABL on July 11.
It is now July 30. Even allowing for a two week confirmation period, there is still no announcement to already paid up members as to who these players are.
What is it exactly that is being hidden from people who have already made a financial investment in the club for the coming season?

I'm not jumping to the defence of the ABL, but I'm sure they will announce the players as soon as they can.
I'm amazed the ABL committed themselves to such planning around halfway through the Northern Hemisphere seasons. I realise the seasons fall very close together, but I would have thought a draft would be more suitable taking place in September. Perhaps the answer is a two stage draft, specifically, one for local players as stage one around this time of the year, and a second stage in September, which includes the Australian overseas players. Just an idea.
Stuart, please don't get frustrated with the ABL because you're an excellent fan of the game, and we all know the ABL has its good and bad points in terms of planning and management of goals. A lot from the outside seems to happen at the last minute with the ABL, but again they have to wait out the American season on several matters.
Get right behind the Aces because as KC has noted this is a very important season.

Congratulations to Scott Wearne and Dean Marnell on their appointment to the Aces coaching panel.
Both outstanding baseball people, who will bring plenty to playing management at the club.

ok starting to see some sort of new direction taking place at the ACES , international manager, new younger assistant coaches, i guess Tommy will have an import or two that no one knows of?? as a local player you would love to be having a go this year with the ACES, not sure who is pulling the strings down there but it looks promising from the out side, so come on puppiteer tell us the names of the restricted players that have signed that will keep us happy for now.

Ricky....happened to wander down to Essendon on the weekend and talk there was that Dean Marnell is not on the coaching staff at the Aces. Does anyone know? It would be great to see Dean and Wearny together on the field. I was unable to find out for sure because Dean is in the USA with the Carl Ripken team.

Interesting post of yours, newatit.
I have heard similar concerns regarding the Dean Marnell "appointment" and also the shabby treatment handed out to a couple of other potential Aces coaches (one of whom I reckon might be a regular on this forum).

Who really knows player. I hope that it gets sorted out quickly though. We have supported the Aces through thick and thin and deserve to know who is going to replace who??

I heard on the grapevine that a certain ex ABL player and hasn't played for quite a while ( with bad knees ) may have been appointed as an assistant coach. I don't think he would take a pay cut from his radio commitments to be an assistant though..

The wording of the Advert is very interesting. The "required qualifications" almost read like the resume' of someone they already have in mind for the job. Hopefully they get plenty of applications and the position isn't simply a "job for the boys (or the girls)". This season is almost the last chance for the Aces so hopefully they get the choice right.

The very short time frame for applications to be submitted is a concern. While the Knox departure may have been sudden, it is conceivable that a replacement had already been identified - perhaps some time ago.
After all, any interested and qualified party will surely need time to prepare an application, followed (you would imagine, and would hope) by an intensive interview process and adequate notice (at least a month) being given to his or her current employer.
One does usually not simply walk away from any professional management position to take up another gig at short notice.
Still, as long as the right appointment is made at this pivotal time for the Aces and the league.....

Mr. Knox is just another human being, with foibles, limits, dreams and a personal life. I'm not privvy to any of these realities and wish Windsor all the best for his future.

Wow what a wicked web we weave when we practice to deceive, latest mail on GMs job appears to be...... Boys club have arranged for the departure of Mr. Nox who may or may not stay on a little while in an advisory position new appointment about to be announced Justin Huber and this leads to the unlikely event that previous assistant coaches may well be reinstated. W T F. Congrats to both RusselEdwards and KC on their forethought on this matter, you guys must have a crystal ball.

I do like your theory Ricky, the job description does state that the role is not responsible for baseball operations. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Slightly off topic, but it is great to see the Aces getting out there first with the protected list (to my knowledge the Aces are the only team to officially announce their protected list) and to have started announcing import players. It is refreshing to see the club being a leader in such fields.
Sadly, the piece on the two Chicago White Sox players includes many factual errors and one exclusion. It really could have been more professional, clearer and transparent in how it was written.

Ricky, I think it is a fair call to question how a professional employment process - for a significant management position - can be properly followed within the limited time frame and the awkward circumstances that appear to pertain in this case (IE so close to the start of such a critical season).
You seem to have some inside knowledge of what may or may not be happening here. Perhaps you would like to enlighten us.

Goodonya KC your comments on the employment process are 100% correct as are Russelledwards on the job description being written to suit only a handful of people, when they announce Justin as the new GM then all the pieces will fall into place for all to see, then we can all make comment on what really does go on behind closed doors

Would Justin's qualifications stack up as per the document? Not stating anything against him as a candidate.
How many previous assistant coaches would want re-instatement after the mess of the former Manager leaving.

Checking the fine print on the ad for GM.
"This role is designated Elite Athlete Friendly meaning the employer is open to accepting expressions of interest from elite athletes who require flexible work arrangements for training and competition."
Hmmmmmmm

It will be interesting to observe the process behind this appointment. Obviously the job has been set out for one particular candidate, but I do know that a life long baseball person with impressive tertiary education credentials and wealth of working experience is also applying.
The decision between the two would be a no brainer for any corporation, but the ABL ain't any corporation.
Lets just hope they get it right because we could be looking at the last season of the ABL.

Johne, I share your same concern regarding the future of the ABL. It hasn't been able to attract enough interest, and other team sports have made bigger moves on the summer season. Winter is locked up with AFL and the rugby codes, but NBL and A-League are jostling for the summer in terms of domestic team sports, and the ABL has to try and take a slice of the market off these sports, which have more money and profile.
As for the Melbourne GM role it's interesting how ABL clubs are trying to get players to take two jobs. John Hussey and Hayden Beard are both players and pitching coaches, and Justin Huber could potentially be a GM and a player. It looks like cost cutting to me.

johne, the escape clause for any appointment lies in the following requirement on qualifications:
"Bachelor’s Degree and 3 to 5 years relevant general management experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience"
Pretty wide open and wholly subjective, I would have thought. The highly credentialled person to which you refer may be one of many who will either not bother or who will have no chance of the appointment in any case.
Let us hope that the ABL - in its wisdom - is able to come up with an inspired and appropriate choice at this important time for the league.

I would have thought that you would want your GM to be present and approachable during the games, for members, staff, volunteers, sponsors and corporates to be able to communicate any problems or ideas to. No disrespect to Justin but i don't believe that this role could be done if they were playing.

John Hussey and Hayden Beard are both players and pitching coaches, and Justin Huber could potentially be a GM and a player. It looks like cost cutting to me. To me, plenty of ppl are interested, they are just not interested in Altona. Plenty follow the team in many different ways, watching online, following players in the USA etc etc - BUT, I know many who do this without investing a dollar in support of the Aces during the ABL season at all. Bums on seats should be the number 1 goal here. I am afraid Altona has proven it cannot do this and it will always struggle to attract people there. A Waverly game a few years back, AUS played Chinese Taipei, plenty attended as the grass area out the back was full of cars + all their car-parks and more out onto the road! I played in a 3’s final a few years back at Melbourne where numbers that day on the hill would compete with any average ABL game attendance. Melbourne BC from memory sold out of food and alcohol stocks were gone in the first hour. IMO, if you don’t change the venue, you will not change the attendance or grow, SIMPLES! The best venues IMO for the Aces is listed below. Obviously they of course need upgrading and many different approvals etc in order for it to be doable. Melbourne Malvern Waverly Springvale. Cheltenham. St Kilda. Port Melbourne Yes of course they all have different challenges, but would attract many more to ABL games than heading over the bridge to a lifeless cement block that appeals to nobody and is miles from anyone also! It is not like this is the first time many have said this either. As for the GM role on offer, my first thought is that this should be well and truly sorted by now. As should their plans be in place for the up and coming season. Not rolling into September and everyone wondering why in Nov/Dec this isn’t working again?? You can change the train driver as many times as you like, but the train still is only capable of the same momentum. Change the train (coaches, venues, rosters, advertising, sponsors, etc etc) and its driver, who knows where it will go, or how quickly!
