With the Aces advertising for a replacement manager after Phil Dale "stepped down", who should take over?
Should it be a local manager such as Shanahan, Clarkson, Weir etc, or should they go down the same road as Perth and Adelaide and go and get an import manager?
What other changes need to occur?

Its interesting Pirates, we place so much emphasis on the pathway program for player yet there doesn't seem to be anything around for the coaches to progress to the next level?

you would think that there are coaches that could do the job right here and really there should be someone to take over after being groomed along side the coaches that have been there. Even from another state, isn't or shouldn't it part of the overall plan to develop players, coaches and umpires which then filter back down to the grass roots and show a pathway for all participants of our game. I know I prefer to see our home grown baseball people taking part at this level. I recon its made our umps more professional and our players, IMO. Our top coaches that have teams playing off in finals would be a good starting point.

I would have thought it's time to clear the decks. I have no problem with an import manager, which would put everyone on notice and show who is serious, who wants to be there and who deserves to be there. I like "pirates" idea of grooming some local coaching talent but the idea of that filtering down should already be happening from the MLB funded academy in QLD. The game has been ordiary nick for 100 years before the current people got their hands on it and reading some recent posts, it's in ordinary nick now! Time for a change I say!

Had a call from a friend out West today....West of the Nullabor that is, with a strong rumour that Brooke Knight is set to manage the Aces this year. Watch this space.

I know they want him back if they can get him, Stu. But it might be a blessing in disguise if they have to go after someone new. Although their track record doesn't fill me with confidence.
Remember Charlie Aliano, he was going to be the saviour! And we all know how that worked out.

Interesting to follow the fortunes of the four Melbourne Aces affiliated position players received from Colorado and Kansas City for the 2013-14 season. All four have moved up from A+ to AA and all four are in the Texas League. Ryan Casteel hit .273-17-65-0 last season with Modesto, spending much of his time behind the plate. With Tulsa, his time behind the dish is a third of what it is at first base at this point in time, but his numbers aren't showing much of a decline. Given the same amount of plate appearances (PA) this year as last, he is in pace to go .270-22-76-1. Tyler Massey (.267-11-53-10 with Modesto) has found the promotion to Tulsa more challenging than Casteel, and is currently on pace for a .176-8-38-23 year. The speed is up, which is a positive, but the batting average (BA) is well down. He did go deep today, so hopefully it's a sign of things to come. His strikeout numbers (95 last year and on pace for 113 this year) are however alarming Both Casteel and Massey are part of the Tulsa Drillers, who lead the Texas League North. Jared Schlehuber and Justin Trapp, the two Kansas City Royals affiliated players are also in the Texas League North, however they are dead last in the division, though it still relatively early doors in the season. Schlehuber was .299-8-59-1 with A+ Wilmington Blue Rocks, however at NorthWest Arkansas, he has hit the wall and is on track for a .187-5-28-0 year. His K/BB numbers are on the road to an increase, and he's on track to move from 51/38 to 79/31. Trapp was good at Wilmington (.257-10-47-25) but largely struggled with the Aces. He has however hit the ground running with the Naturals however, and is on track for a .241-14-46-19 season, with his strikeout numbers heading down (from 118 last season to 83 this season) while the BB numbers stay constant (51 both seasons). His issue however is his glove. The Royals wanted to give him time in the outfield in the ABL however he has been a 2B for the Naturals this season, though his MiLB fielding % is .931 and turns just 1.59 double plays for every error. Derek Jeter (career fielding % in MLB of .976), considered by some to be an average MLB shortstop (debate is out on this) turns 5.60 double plays per error. Yes, I realise Justin Trapp to Derek Jeter is a reach, but in the end, Trapp, should he want to make the majors, should be measured against guys like this. KC's problem may end up being finding a spot to put Trapp in the field.

Just need to change the error in it lads, and it will be perfect!

Might just be me but has anyone else noticed the first of two road trips to Brisbane falls on the weekend of the G20 Summit?

Might just be me but has anyone else noticed the first of two road trips to Brisbane falls on the weekend of the G20 Summit? Nope...... And I would believe I'm in the majority. And that makes a difference how ? I'm more concerned about why the Aces persist in the stupid game start times on Saturdays. As for the first home week, why the heck is the double header on a Sun and not the Saturday. A lot more chance of getting any decent crowd if it was on the Saturday.

The city of Brisbane is effectively in lockdown that week. Accommodation is already scarce and I have people in SE Queensland who are amazed that the Bandits were drawn at home that weekend given what is going on up there.
Looking at accommodation, I hope the ABL has already organised it for the Aces. What is left on that weekend is made up largely of two kinds - expensive or self-rated.
That double header you talk of Goblin is a strange one. You effectively take out the option of any juniors attending for the 11.30am game and seniors for the 2.00pm game. Prey tell what happens if the Sunday is rained-out and the two games are not played. The only option is playing an extra two games in Brisbane - and we all know just how the club has historically done on the road.
Btw, a 1pm single game on Sunday would see the Bandits at Tullamarine in plenty of time to get what is a cheaper flight that would save just over $1000...and given extra costs of flights from the northern states seems to have been a reason why the Aces continue to rack up the frequent flyer miles to Perth instead of Canberra doing it (I do recall another part of the ABL spin on the extra Melbourne-Perth games was to capitalise on the Season II Grand Final series...fair enough but Canberra and Perth have played the past two Grand Final series...no wish to capitalise on that?).
Fortunately, we play Thursdays on every road trip except for Perth, where the players have graciously been given Thursday December 25 at home...and instead have to play on the Monday, which I do not think is a public holiday.

Forget about scheduling for the time being.
Of more pressing concern should surely be appointment of coaching personnel and development of a decent playing list.
We are at short odds, even now, that the Head Coach gig will be going to a well-known Victorian baseball identity.
It will be interesting to see the support that he is provided and what sort of roster the club can manufacture.
Could be some exciting times ahead.

For someone to be at such short odds then a name must be known.
Not sure why it would be in best interests to keep the name secret if the information is indeed true.

Excellent to read the latest Aces email, which notes that "renewals and new members are signing up at a record pace. Currently, membership sales sit at the highest level of renewal."
It would be nice for the club to give a number to this like AFL clubs do, but it appears we'll just have to take their word for it. We were told of record memberships last season only for the club to even stop announcing crowd attendances in the box scores late in the season.

Well done to both GM Windsor Knox and AGM Jacob Ward for their presence and participation in the charity fund raiser held by the Berwick Baseball Club yesyerday.
The donations from the Aces were part of a vast array of auction and raffle items that raised in excess of $11400.00 on the day.

Are the Aces any closer to naming the manager? The season isnt far off and the manager will need to be recruiting players for this season?

Speaking of players, Sam Street, recently drafted by the Pirates, becomes an option, and what of Josh Spence, who signed with Amarillo in the American Association? He has not yet featured for the Aces. Could his being in independent baseball see him decide to play in order to fight his way back into a MLB set-up?
