With a double header weekend for the DBA in A Grade, there will be plenty of Baseball for everybody, including the good old Mothers Day matches.
First up on the Saturday is CHELT V FRANKSTON: Cheltenham hasve beeen cruising along nicely even with Clakka's at the helm last week due to a sniffle. Cheltenham at present has the best defence on paper and seem to be racking up hits at merry clip. The Tomatoes last week racked up 23 hits against the improving Jays, Could be an interesting match, but on Chelts home soil should take the lollies, but it will be an interesting game. DANDENONG V BONBEACH: Bonbeach are on the improve under the tutelage of Neil Jones and are starting to display some fire in the belly. Dandy on the other hand are still up and down with their form and need to find that consistency. The Angels should have the better of the Jays but the scires will be closer than what many people may think. The Angels for mine. DINGLEY V BERWICK: Dingley being the second of two undefeated sides in A Grade take on an inconsistent Berwick. The young guns from Berwick are still feeling their way in A Grade and should give a good account of themselves. Dingley on the other hand are display good offence along with a tight defence. Playing at Dingley this weekend should give them the edge of an improving Berwick. PAKENHAM V MORNINGTON: The battle of the new and relative new. Should be a good honest battle with a toss of the coin coming down for Mornington. With Brendan Wilson in fine form on the mound with solid back up from Josh Mulherin ans Ryan Campbell should prove just a bit stronger in a tight tussle. Pakenham have so far made a good fist of their first foray into A Grade should push Mornington all the way. Puma has the boys ticking over nicely and could pinch this game with sold hitting. I still feel Mornington will win this game on the hill. Now for Mothers Day. BERWICK V PAKENHAM: This is the closest to a local derbt for these two teams. It will be interesting how these teams come up after the Saturday. I feel that Pakenham may get over the line in a tight hard fought game. Once again, it will be hard to pick as it will all come down to whose available to play. CHELTENHAM V BONBEACH: Could be probably the most losided game of the round. Chelt having a rich vein of pitching to choose from will be too strong for the Jays. FRANKSTON V DINGLEY: Could be a chance for a major upset here with Frankston I feel with pitching back up to handle a double header weekend. Even though the Dingley team is travelling nicely, this is the one game where an upset could occur. Frankston to squeeze by in a tough fought game. MORNINGTON V DANDENONG: Mornington to celebrate Mothers Day with a win over the Angels. Like most games this weekend it will come down to pitching and Mornington should have enough firepower to sneak by. The Angels have to start showing consistency and this weekend will be a good chance to get some consistency on the board. Hope all the Baseball Mums have a very pleasant day on Sunday and don't be to harsh on the players not being there for Lunch, it isn't their fault. Hope all the players and scorers and umpires keep there feet dry on Saturday. Good luck to all.

MWBL match of the round (I reckon) will see ladder leaders GMBC face the defending league Champ's, the Heathmont Penguins at the 'Iceburg'. Will global warming affect the outcome? I'll bet my baby Harp seal fur undies on the Penguins club.

I don't get on this thing much anymore, however, a chance to pay credit where credit is needed. the Bonbeach vs Dandy game today was a good one, I and others from Dandy went into it thinking that this will be a rout. For those that aren't aware, Bonbeach from previous seasons have lost a lot of premium 'A' grade talent, when I say a lot, I mean pretty much all of there boys from last season except for maybe madden and bucci. What they served up today was some spine and a team that is wanting to make a fist with what they have. I walked away with the same respect I have always had for a stalwart of the DBA in Bonbeach, I expected to walk away with none. Neil 'Harpo' Jones was a winner when I was a kid and clearly nothing has changed (whilst warming up between innings and I was at first base receiving the ball I could hear him rallying his troops and getting them to believe that they were up to their eyeballs in this game). What he got from his boys was a 5-1 loss but watching people like freshwater still killing the ball with the bat, a catcher (not sure what his name is) throwing our fleetest of foot out at 2nd base at will and a young schoppe throwing a gem on the hill and actually reminding me of a young david 'hoppy' Hopkins, gave me absolute belief that the Bonbeach baseball club will be a threat as a club in the not to distant future. good luck with your team Harpo, you have taken on a challenge that I think you will win. B Grade Forest Hill 9 - Latrobe Uni 2
Latrobe Uni are definitely not as bad as their 0-5 record suggests.
B Reserve Forest Hill 9 - Latrobe Uni 5

Lara took advantage of a welter of free passes to smack Bacchus Marsh 14-3 in the GBA this afternoon, while Saints led all the way for a solid 9-2 result over Deakin. Playing under lights as the third game of a triple-header to mark its inaugural Heritage Day, Ballarat Brewers shook off a competitive Corio Tigers 6-1 as the frost and the fog descended on Prince of Wales Reserve. Werribee plays host to Bellarine on Sunday, in an important game for both clubs. Guild has the A Grade bye. www.geelongassociation.baseball.com.au

Most surprised to see the DBA has a ruling whereby a two hour timed game has no innings able to be started after ten minutes before the allotted finishing time, yet still insists on a game being finished right on the two hour mark.
Yesterday, in the game in which I participated, the game was called on this rule, which cost one of our players, who had come into the game at the hour mark, a chance to have an at bat. So from the hour game time he could have had, he lost ten minutes for a rule that makes no sense, and 12 minutes for a rain delay of light mist, which in winter baseball was almost an embarrassment to come off for.
So from his hour of baseball, our player got to play the best part of 38 minutes.
To the DBA I ask the rule be looked at. Yes, it may not see too many games have the result altered as far as the winner goes, but we get to play two hours of baseball a week. If we were playing 162 games like the major leagues then I doubt anyone would mind, but two hours in a week? Let’s PLAY baseball rather than scratch our heads wondering why we’re not.
In regards the rain mist. If the umpire calls time and goes to get their spray jacket, then no one will have any dramas with that. For 30 seconds, the rain was a drizzle. The umpires discretion I could in the end deal with regards that level of precipitation, but the 10+ minutes of light mist that followed, there was no reason not to be playing winter baseball. Was it heavier for one team over the other? Of course not.
In the end, the game lost over a sixth of the allotted playing time for no reason. It didn’t effect the end result, and fair play to both sides, but we’ve just seen a massive proposal submitted to dramatically increase the playing numbers in our sport. As a sport, we possess no realistic chance of achieving that by continually coming up with reasons NOT to play instead of actually being out on the diamond.

Could it be (if the boy's names were faked, that is), that to have a game that I see Cheltenham lost, it may have been better than no game at all? C1 level winter ball ? I agree, take the sheep station back off them! No, wait....that's right, they didn't win it. Glass houses.

Another interesting week in the Bendigo Association:
Scots v Dodgers. Scots came out firing against the Dodgers, scoring early and often to run out winner 9-1. John Taylor was in great control on the mound for the Scots, mowing down the aggressive Dodgers lineup. Scots got up to a 3-0 lead after 2, then a 5 run 4th put them up 8-0 and put the result beyond doubt. This win brought the scots record to 3-2 and shot them to the top of the ladder. Even though its only 5 rounds in, it is a great achivement by everyone in the Scots baseball club who have worked hard from going from the whipping boys to a very solid A grade team. And with a number to juniors working their way up the ranks, their rise is not going to be a short-term bang. Dodgers record is also 3-2, sitting in 2nd on percentage behind Scots. After winning the first 3 games they have dropped the last 2, and no doubt will be keen to punch a couple more wins out before the mid-season break.
In the other game, it was Falcons v East. East jumped out early against the Falcons 'BP' pitcher, scoring 2 in both the first and second, on some good solid line-drive hitting. Falcons came back in the 3rd with a 3 run dig to move the score to 4-3, before east answered with 3 in the 5th. Facing another 4 run deficit, the Falcons were able to come back with one in the 5th (on a Mick Peters solo home run) and 3 in the 6th to tie it up. In the 7th East were able to get their first 2 on, before 2 strike-outs and a grounder to short allowed Falcons to get out of the inning. In the bottom of the 7th, Falcons were able to get runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out, then a soft roller to the pitcher was thrown away, allowing the 2 runners to score and giving Falcons a 9-7 victory. It was certainly a very entertaining game, with some soound pitching from Aaron Sherriff for East, who threw the complete game before tiring late, and Mick Peters for Falcons coming on to throw 2 innings of scoreless relief for Falcons to give them a chance to come back. Wth the win the Falcons record also moves to 3-2, and sit 3rd on percentage. After a struggle at the start of the season, they seem to be rounding into the form that has carried them over the last few season. East now drops to 1-4, but with some players coming back and their young guys developing, they will look to be stronger as the season progresses.
As you can see, 3 teams have records on 3-2, showing the evenness of this seasons competition. Its quite obvious there are no forgone conclusions in this season. Next weeks games are Dodgers v East and Falcons v Scots

I agree, take the sheep station back off them! No, wait....that's right, they didn't win it. Glass houses. You are kidding aren't you? You are actually going to try and put this back on dandy? Cheltenham had a number of bench players and as soon as it was pointed out that they were playing under different names the Chelt coach immediately pulled them from the game. One of them even started the game as the pitcher. So your right perfeckt, someone was playing for sheep stations. And was happy to cheat to get them. Glass houses indeed.

No, I'm not trying to put anything on anyone Puma. I was merely making an observation based on the post's on this thread. The rhetorical question was not pointedly about Dandy but any team that has ever done this. The reference to sheep stations was an attempt to highlight the difference between bringing in ring in's for an A Grade finals tilt as opposed to some kids playing a game of winter ball at a level somewhat below that. I didn't try to offend anyone at the DBC. nor was I trying to be holier than thou.

Just relax people and take a bex. I am sure if there is any problems, the good nad mighty Buddha will fix any complaint if a complaint is to be made. And Stuey, maybe a better defence would have got the player a chance to have a hit. Who knows, the rules work ok, no point nit picking over a minor tragedy. As for what's happening down at Bonny, Kudos to Harpo and the boys, no wins on the weekend but a lot of respect being earned for their efforts. Well done Pakky on getting their second win in A Grade. And finally well done to Chelt and Dingley on keeping their records to a clean sheet. Bring on next week.

Terrific initiative by MWBL umpiring department last weekend in assigning 3 of the most experienced umpires to work lines in B grade with some of the up and coming talent.
Such moves will fast track the development of these guys and lead to better umpiring across the board. The young bloke we had, Jordan Bates, called an excellent game and has the potential to develop into a really good umpire.
