pirates, it's a circumstance created by the way the weekends fall and comes about every few years.
Games are always scheduled up until the last available weekend before Xmas... In 2009 we played on Dec 20... in 2008, Dec 21... Looking at next year's calander, I'd expect games to be scheduled on Dec 22. On the postive side, I'd say you won't see games this close to Xmas again until at least 2017 or 2018.
One positive step taken by the league in recent years is to allow clubs to negotiate changing the day teams play (in fact, this year they went a step further and allowed clubs to nominate their preferred day for the entire season, without negotiation).
The Geelong v Cheltenham games this weekend were shifted to the Saturday to provide our members at least one extra day off before Xmas... knowing we'll probably have games on Dec 22 next year, I'd encourage everyone to make a note to move their games to Sat, Dec 21.
That is, if we're all still here after today (nod to KC)!

Hey Nate,
In the past the last games before the Xmas break were always held on the Sat, that way clubs could have a xams party after the game etc.

Hey Nate, In the past the last games before the Xmas break were always held on the Sat, that way clubs could have a xams party after the game etc. Hey bobby, BV's archive records go back as far as 2006 and show most games scheduled on Sunday the last weekend before Xmas... my records go back to 2005 and show the only time we played on Saturday on the last weekend before Xmas were home games (usually thanks to an agreement with the team we were playing). My memory serves that prior to 2005, not many games were played on Saturday as the league was strongly opposed to games being played Saturday. Not sure how far back you're remembering, but I'd suggest it was perhaps an arrangment made by your club, rather than a standard across the league. Speaking of club Xmas parties, stuck around last week for Waverley's... just another example of why they're an outstanding club... around 100-150 people, kids everywhere, bouncing castle, dunk tank, Santa in the fire truck and lolly bags for all the kids... enough raffle prizes to sink a medium-sized boat... Good ol' fashioned Xmas party like I remember as kid... big props to the Wildcats on your Xmas cheer!!!

Maybe it was prior to 2005, I seem to recall we played most of the games at home so it might have been at the club request.

I much prefer the Geelong trip on a Saturday than a Sunday this close to St Nick Time. Look forward to meeting you eagle for a cup of coffee. Just on a side note. The majority of cricket associations finished last Saturday.

We have three women's teams at our club, only one of which will get to play tomorrow due to opposition forfeits. I'm peed I don't get to play. It's one thing I look forward to of a Saturday and I HATE forfeits.
Totally understand reasoning behind forfeits this weekend being so close to Christmas. I'm sure these won't be the only two for the weekend that's for sure.
Perhaps BV will take note and respond appropriately to this problem in future years.

OMR, the cricket competition most closely aligned to the Vic Summer League would be the Victorian Premier Cricket League... they play this weekend.
The Victorian Turf Crikcet Association, The Ballarat Cricket Association, The Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association, The Benalla and District Cricket Association, The Geelong Cricket Association, The Bairnsdale Cricket Association, The Bendigo and District Cricket Association, The Albury Wodonga Cricket Association, and The Gisbourne and District Cricket Association are also playing... perhaps more.

Close, Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association, that covers all the cricket on the peninsula. Sorry racer, you could right also. I still remember playing on Dec 24 in the VSDCA many years ago.

St kilda came out on top in both games today. 12-2 in the reserves and 5-2 in the ones with Anthony Cerafice throwing a complete game gem scattering 4 hits - 3 of which went to Ricky wheeler and one was a laser shot solo home run. Big wins for the saints who were struggling for numbers in both games (as were Berwick I would guess)

It will be fascinating to see how the new heat rule is applied today.

Funny the heat rule got mentioned. Preston up 3 to 2 over sandy in bottom of 7 when heat rule applied. Sandy just made pitching change. Preston may have to because of delay

Had a thoroughly enjoyable day in Sleepy Hollow, hospitality was good, baseball was reasonable, some good performances, great weather, should never have left the ground at 7.00pm, missed the best part of the game I've been told with the miracle comeback by Chelt. Left the game with the BayCats 9-3 in front. Thanks Nate for the day and the chat, should do it again sometime.

Well I had the trip to sleepy hollow for the under 12's and because of it being 23rd dec, had 4 kids unavailable. Played with 8 and it wasn't pretty. My gripe, and I'll be taking it up with bv, is that kids have switched off by this time of year. Kids baseball should be finished the Sunday before their last week of school. It's stupid to ask 8 to 14 year olds to show up when they're in holiday mode. But bv have in their wisdom decided to being the kids back after the holidays.....Australia day weekend! Well done bv on another fantastic fixturing coup!

Oh and rebels in a good game over springy 4-2, with Canadian Mike going the distance in a game dominated by pitching.

I have come to the opinion and I include myself in this, that the travel in not an issue in any sport, when you choose to play ant sport you can be guaranteed that there will some travel involved. So, there is no point sooking about it, but just get on with it. And Wyatt, I do agree with you about the kids baseball that it should finish one week prior to Christmas which would coincide with the last week of school. And also resumption should be when the school resumes. And for you people that think I have done a backflip, it is almost a three quarter flip after a good conversation with Nate on Saturday. Merry Christmas and a safe New Year to all forum readers.

Has to be asked whether there has been another import that has had the effect that Adam Rowe has had on Fitzroy. When he arrived they were 0-4 and staring down the barrel, now at the Christmas break they find themselves 8-5 at sitting equal third. Adam is 7-0 on the mound with an ERA of around 1 and would be in the leading group when it comes to batting averages. Just a great bloke to have around!

15 year old Mitchell Holding hit a home run for Chelt on Sunday in the ones. I stand to be corrected but I don't think any 15 year old has hit a bomb at that level since wood bats came in. Great work and will be one to watch closely during this years nationals.

Hey John, Any home run is worth savouring particularly by young blokes. But my young bloke put one over when he was still 14 (only by a few weeks) and that was at Altona with the fence back. I'm not sure when we went to wood bats only but he's always played with wood at senior level.
Cheers & Merry Christmas to all.
