Not long to go now for the real business to start. Round 17 in the DBA promises to sort out where the final four will be at. A Grade Dandenong v Berwick The Angels are officially the Kings of the tied ball game. This week they have the chance to shut the door on the Dodgers finals aspiritions with a win. This could be an interesting game. The Dodgers with all to play to keep their season going should prevail in a close game. The Dodgers by a run. Frankston v Cheltenham Frankston needs to win this game to consolidate their spot in the four and the Rustlers need to produce a big effort before the finals. My feeling is that Cheltenham are just starting to warm up to the task and should take this game by 3 or 4 runs. Mornington v Dingley Dingley are in the same boat as the Rustlers, needing the final two games to fine tune themselves before the finals. Mornington for mine are the big improvers in A Grade this season. Dingley should win this game in a close fought contest and should get in by 3 to 5 runs. B Grade Boneo v Moorabbin Boneo should be well rested and this for me will be the defining match of the round in B Grade. Once again these two sides have shown that they have no trouble hitting, but in this game I feel that the Braves have the stringer pitching depth. Boneo in a close game by 2 runs. Dingley v Chelsea Dingley is the one side that has really impressed me with their young and fine leadership. Just an ounce of luck and the Young Guns might have been entertaining thoughts of finals action. Chelsea on the other hand are counting the days before the season ends. Dingley to finish the season off strong and should get up by 4 to 5 runs. Oakleigh v OGH I was impressed by the Travelling Willburies last week against dandenong in the way the fought the game out all the way to the end. Oakleigh have had an indifferent year but I think the TW's form over the last month should see them win this game by 4 or 5 runs. Pakenham v Dandenong This is the match of the round and if all the stars line up, should be the preview to the Grand Final. The Pumas aired their bats last week and 15 runs resulted and to win this game they will have to produce the same again. The Angels played good defence last week and if they can hold the Pumas, they could produce the suprise of teh round. A toss of te coin and purely on the fact it is Pakky's home ground, Pakky by 2 runs.
Don't forget your gumboots and rain coats and may all have a good weekend and be winners.

Finals kick off in the Bendigo competition this Sunday.
In the preliminary final is Bendigo East up against Strathfieldsaye Dodgers, to be played at East. So far this year in the 5 clashes between the teams, Bendigo East have won 3 with Dodgers 2. This game will revolve around which team pitches better on the day. Both teams have good hitting lineups, with East if anything the little stronger, so runs may flow thick and fast, but which teams pitching can shut the opposition down. If it is each teams best arm to throw, it will likely be Aaron Sherriff for East and Geoff Holland for Dodgers, which would be an incredible matchup. Im not going to try to predict a winner, I would be just guessing, but looking forward to an awesome game. The winner will go into the best of 3 GF series, to take on Falcons.
Hopefully the weather holds and we have a great game! Good luck to all on the weekend.

From the big guy...
Hi all,
Just a quick update - at this point the DV league have called off the Under 15 and Under 13 finals at Mill Park and Bundoora and will play next week. We have spoken with clubs hosting MWBL Under 15 and our RD Under 13 comps, and so far the grounds are ok to continue.
With that said, if we get more rain overnight and the games are required to be called off, the junior league chairmen and pennant committee will make a decision as to what the process will be going forward.
If the overwhelming majority of junior finals are called off, the round will be declared a washout and we will come back next week. If next week is a washout, then the highest placed teams will move into the Grand Final.
If tomorrow, only small amount are called off, and this is certainly more relevant to the RD junior league, then the match conditions for finals will come into play.
We all realise that this is very frustrating for all concerned, but we are in the midst of the 2nd wettest winter in the past 15 or so years, so we would ask all clubs, players, managers and parents to understand that these decisions are being made for the safety of the players and for the best outcome for the competition
Yours truly
Mark Le Grew President MWBL

Wow, what a weekend we have in store. With the rain tonight only clearing tomorrow, how many games will be played? The top two grades could have the final four sorted by this time tomorrow night if some games get played and some don't. So here goes;
A Grade The top three cannot fall out of finals and there is a possibility that the last round could have a washout for both Monty and Knox (due to their grounds already being washed out recently) their games this week are crucial. Bottom of the ladder is set with Melb Uni too far behind on percentage and playing Knox and Monty in the next two weeks, it looks like they will be relegated. Lets assume that all games are played.
Croydon vs Research - Research will be too strong here and finish the season minor premiers. Well done! Croydon have been disappointing and could potentially find themselves equal bottom (although I don't think this will happen). Croydon's ground could be wet, maybe I should be tipping whether games will be played or not - Played and won by Research.
Melbourne University vs Knox - MOTR - Knox to keep finals chance alive with a win over the struggling Melb Uni. Knox probably expected to finish in the top two and find themselves in a scrap for the top four. Losing the first game due to a clerical error may come back to haunt them. Game to be played, I think their ground drains a lot better since the redevelopment. Two MOTR due to how big these games are in the context of the season.
North Balwyn vs GMBC - MOTR - Monty also in the scrap for the finals, but should account for the young NB side. I am kind of happy that NB will still be in the top grade next year, they could start to challenge as early as next season. Game to be played - just.
Ringwood vs Greensborough - Greens play well against Ring, but Ring are moving well. The game off last week may have been good for Ring. Their ground does not hold water well and with the game being called off last week (1 anyway), I doubt this ground will come up.
Watsonia vs Heathmont - Watsonia have done well this season and, like NB, may not be too far off challenging again. Heathmont are cruising now and looking at the finals and how they might get to the final game. They should be too strong this week. Chance of game, better than average.
B Grade Good week of games this week, if all were to play, we could see movement in the ladder. The biggest games could be washed out and that could cause a problem for at least one side.
Essendon vs Westgarth - If this game plays, Garth win, simply put. IMO regardless of if they win the GF or not, Garth should replace Melb Uni in A Grade such has been their dominance of the comp this season. They are not just the highest scoring side, but also allow the least runs against. Even with a couple missing for college, they are very strong. Likely to play this game at Essendon with the artificial infield and all, outfielders like the mud right?
Forest Hill vs Bundoora - If this game plays, FH win, but I cannot see how their ground will be playable with 'Duty of Care' being thrown around. The ground is a bog at this stage of the season if we don't get rain, so I think they may be pushing it to get a game in. With two league umpires a wash out likely. What does it do for FH? If Ring is washed out, FH still have a chance of making finals, if Ring play and win, FH out. If Ring play and lose it comes down to the final round where Ring would need to beat Rebels to get in the finals. Relying on others results is always dangerous and I would not like to be FH ATM.
La Trobe University vs St. Kilda - This is a tough one to tip, If it were the start of the year I would pick La Trobe, but they have not got it done this season. St Kilda have also struggled, but are playing better baseball of late. La Trobe have won 1 of their last 3 where as St Kilda have won 1 and drawn another of their last 3. Does this make them the form side in this match up? La Trobe holds water pretty well, but I think that there is a bit of rain to fall over their park overnight, so chance of a game average.
Monash University vs Ringwood - If they play I think that Ring will prove too strong. Monash, with only 8 named, will need to come out firing. The question for me here is more about their ground. So, If Ring win, they could find themselves sitting third on the ladder if Rebels beat Waverley (which I think they will). If Ring lose, they will need FH to be a wash out or lose to be in the finals because if Ring lose and FH win, FH will jump to 4th due to a much better percentage (see above for their game prediction). I think that this game is more likely to play than the FH game, a wash out will not hurt Ring if FH play because they would still be half a game in front and a win in the last round would see them make the finals.
North Coburg Rebels vs Waverley - Tough one here, probably MOTR, but too hard to tell what games will play. There is almost as much riding on this game as the FH and Ring games, because 2nd spot is up for grabs. Rebels have the better percentage, but they are close enough that if Waverley win they could take 2nd in the last round. I think Rebels are going to win this week and I hope this game plays as this is a small taste of finals baseball.

Northern suburbs (partic Nth-NthWest) have copped a heap of rain overnight and its still barrelling down, I doubt games out this way will play unless some grounds have amazing drainage.

Our b grade and b reserve sides both got up in tight games at monash uni to hold onto fourth place in each grade. Love playing against Monash, great bunch of guys. All our other ringwood sides were washed out.

Pakenham and Berwick B3s washout out before the first could be completed.
The rain all brought on by Adam Black one of the Hangar newbies who was making his first ever start on the hill. Every time he goes to pitch it rains or the opposition wishes to call the game.

Monty got up over North Balwyn today. I think the score ended 6-2. Great game ,played in good spirit. Great work to North Balwyn doing some hard work mopping up to get the game started on time.

With a 6-3 result in the GBA, second-placed Guild sank any lingering hopes the Brewers had of a play-off berth, while Deakin was seriously challenged by lowly Bacchus Marsh before getting away at the end for a 7-0 win in a terrific defensive game. At home on what is likely to be a heavy track tomorrow, Bellarine has a real chance of upsetting Saints, who will start ace Josh Lee in an effort to nail down fourth placing. Already minor premiers, Lara had the A Grade bye. www.geelongassociation.baseball.com.au

I'm a bit confused by the F/Hill Bundoora B Grade score at 9-0 after I heard tonight that it may have been a forfeit ? but surely that didnt happen after the BRes team was a washout (if it was) and there were all those players available. Did I hear this right or was the game played and F Hill were just too good ?

Dingley over Mornington 10-8 in the 10th Mornington led off with a double in the bottom of the 9th to have the winning run on base but failed to score him!!! Irving and Prior throwing for the dingoes... And with his first solid outing for the season Brendan Wilson made the start for the for the pirates before being relieved by Mulherin for the last few!!

@ authentic. Bundoora did forfeit against FH in the B Grade. I believe they didn't think the ground would get up to scratch so players went home, leading to the forfeit...

Knucleball..you are joking? Games weren't called because of the RAIN..try waterlogged bog heaps that wouldn't allow anything approximately a game of baseball to be played. I must have missed when Netball changed from asphalt to grass. P.S. Table tennis was played also..can't beat that for courage in adverse conditions!

Ballarat Brewers remain a rough chance of making the GBA playoffs after a controversial 4-4 draw between Bellarine and Saints today. Whether the result stands (after protest) or the Bears are awarded a 5-4 win makes no difference to the equation for Saints and the Brewers. If Saints beat Bacchus Marsh in the last round, they are in. If they lose to Bacchus (who have been good in recent weeks), and Ballarat beats Bellarine, then the Brewers are in. Who wrote this script? What a ripper. www.geelongassociation.baseball.com.au

First I've heard of rugby (league or union) being a summer and winter sport. Only a winter sport in my day. Also rugby is played with a much larger ball that travels at much slower speed than a well hit baseball. Poor ground conditions and wet weather make for a dangerous combination with a projectile such as a baseball, perfectly valid reason NOT to play.

broohaha..you introduced the comparison with other sports. It isn't the players refusing to play, but some grounds being deemed to be unfit/unsafe.You might like to read up on the mandatory duty of care provisions re ground conditions. We are lucky to get as many games as we do. It's similar to Worksafe provisions in the workplace..we didn't come up with the conditions, so don't shoot the messenger/s.

The DBA Monday Wrap
A Grade Congratulatios to Dingley, Cheltenham, Dandenong and Frankston on making uo the final four with one round to go. The four is a closed shop as of 5.30pm on Saturday. There was only two games played in A Grade on Saturday with the Cheltenham v Frankston game being wshed out. The Angels made short work of the Dodgers and mad sure that Berwicks season ended on Saturday with a 16 to nil thumping. Solid pitching and good hitting was the policy for the Angels. Down Mornington way, saw an absolute thriller with the Dingoes getting up in the 10th with a two run victory. Mornington had the their chance to take victory in the bottom of the ninth but just couldn't get the job done. Good pitching and hitting from both sides made the game that much better as a spectacle.
B Grade Out of 4 games, only one got a start and that was down Boneo way. Boneo handed out a 14-5 thrashing to the Panthers. Good hitting and a fine performance by Davey Morris on the mound for the Braves proved far to good for the Panthers. This send the Braves heading towards the finals in good spirits, but on the other hand Moorabbin have a bit of work to do if they are to repeat last years finals campaign. All other games in B Grade were washed out. Congratulations to Pakenham, Boneo, Dandenong and Moorabbin on being the final make up of the four. Maybe only the positioning of the four may change.
