Let's have a look at the DBA this week and see what happens In the A grade we have a fairly tight ladder with the main fight going on for 4th and 5th. With Frankston having the bye they should retain 4th spot this week. Cheltenham V Bonbeach. Chelt have been going along quite nicely with only the odd hiccup and should slide past Bonbeach with a minimum of fuss. Kudo's to Bonbeach this year for playing a lot of kids and getting games into them. Chelt by 6 runs. Dandenong V Mornington Dandy should get past the Pirates in what could be a rather tough game. The Pirates have been improving each season since they returned to A Grade. Dandy for me on the basis they have a more allround game with good backups. Dandy by 5 runs Dingley V Berwick. This for me is the match of the round. Dingley are travelling nicely and perched on top of the ladder with Berwick sitting 5th needing the win to stay in touch with the four. I think Berwick will cause the upset of the round and squeeze past Dingley by a run. In B Grade we have what could be the defining round for some of the teams competeing. Chelsea V OGH. The battle of the bottom rungs. Chelsea although sitting last at present holding up the ladder should sneak past OGH to lift them off the bottom. Chelsea by 4 runs. Dingley V Boneo Dingley needs a win to stay in touch with the four and Boneo travelling well, this should be a tight game with Boneo sneaking past Dingley. Kudo's to Dingley for having a very young side playing and competing well. For me Cam and the boys at Boneo by 3 runs. Moorabbin V Dandenong. The match of the round in B Grade with only one point seperating the two side. Moorabbin wins they put a bit of space between themselves and Dandy, Dandy wins, they take third spot. Should be a hard fought game with Moorabbin sneaking home by 1 run. Pakenham V Oakleigh. Pakenham at home are always hard to beat and I can't see anything different happening in this game. Pakenham by the 10 run rule if they get their bats fired up.
Have a good weekend of Baseball and may all have a good game.

Sorry for the late one, 16 hour days will do that to you. Most people will prob read this after their game, but anyway.
The next few weeks are huge, a suprise math of the round for some in A grade, relegation zone is tight.
A Grade
GMBC vs Watsonia - While Watsonia have done enough this season, they will be up against it today. Monty have won 6 straight and are making a huge play at the finals. A big win last week to beat Knox, A win here could put them back in the four and once they are there, they wil not want to be knocked out.
Greensborough vs Knox - This is a hard one to pick as every time I pick against Greens they win and when I pick Knox they seem to lose. I call Knox because they have given up a lot less runs per game than Greens, having said that, look for this to be a close one that may be decided in the last inning.
North Balwyn vs Croydon - MATCH OF THE ROUND - Why? Because the most hangs on the result of this game. A NB win puts a game and precious percentage between them and Melb Uni. A croydon win makes round 16 match up between NB and Uni the absolute game of the round as the loser is surely to be relegated.
Research vs Heathmont - I hope no one is too upset that this is not MOTR, but any other week (or season for that matter) and this would be. The two heavy weights of the league, where do you start to compare them? Hitters for average, yes, both have them, guys who can drive the ball a long way, yes they both have them too. Research have scored 6 less runs for the season which averages out to be less than 1 runs difference per game, but have given up 16 less which is juts over 1 run per game. Based on this, I go Research. Going to be a tough day for pitchers with the way that both these teams are capable of swining. Do you try and hit outside edges and give up right field fence? Do you bust them inside? No, all these guys can hurt you if they pull the ball. As I said, tough day, expect the long ball or a absolute pitcher duel if they are on.
Ringwood vs Melbourne University - It owuld be kind of ironic if Ring beat Melb Uni, which keeps them on the bottom, to be relegated, to play Ringwood in B Grade next year. This is going to be a tough one though. Melb Uni are playing better, but Ring have some good players. Ring need to win this, there is pressure from outside the top four in Monty and Knox are still 1 game back from them. A win keeps the gap and should Knox lose provides a handy little buffer.
B Grade
Not many people would have predicted how close this grade is this year in chasing finals spots. Probably no one would have predicted that Forest Hill would be sitting outside the top four either. FH and Ring with some huge games over the next couple of weeks.
Essendon vs Forest Hill - Can't go past FH, but would make it very interesting should they pick off FH. DM pitch? Their problem is that FH have a lot of good players who can hit and who can pitch. Can't pick against them this week.
La Trobe University vs North Coburg Rebels - Big game here as well. La Uni find themselves out of it this season, but could have a big say in the top four make up with games against Rebels and FH to come. Going for a kind of upset here, Rebels have improved out of their skins this season so far and win feature in the finals, which is a great step. Don't count them out of causing an upset or two come finals.
St. Kilda vs Monash University - This game is hard to pick with St Kilda playing well lately, but they just don't seem to be able to score many runs. They have managed to stop the blleding of runs though. I think Monash will get up, they will continue to win enough to be mid pack, they need to look at pinching a player for next season to challenge for the top four.
Waverley vs Ringwood - MATCH OF THE ROUND - With how tight it is for 3rd and 4th spot between these two sides and FH, the winner here will be confident that they are now relatively safe. If Waverley win, next weeks game between FH and Ring will decide the top four, should Ring win, it keeps them at least a game clear of FH and half a game in front of Waverley. In the context of the seaosn, I would like to see Ring win just to keep the chase interesting, Wave have had the wood on them though so best bet is with them.
Westgarth vs Bundoora - Bundoora did beat 'Grath last season, but I think they will be out matched today. Garth are the odds on favourite for the B Grade title and will go close in the reserves as well. Should they gain promotion, they could go alright next season. Bundoora find themselves tied with both Essendon and St Kilda with 2 wins, they would probably be disappointed with this, although from all reports have improved in a number of areas this season.
Of course, should there be a washout or two, the ladders in both grades would be a mess.
Good luck and sorry for the late tips.

In the MWBL, the B Reserve game at waverley was washed out 45 minutes before the start time due to 'dangerous conditions' in the outfield. It rained a little more then miraculously conditions improved enough for our B grade boys to lose a heart breaker 5-0 despite our guys pitching a no hitter.

A couple of huge A Grade results in the GBA today. Deakin goes to second (on head to head) after beating Guild 1-0 in the tenth, while fifth-placed Saints stays well in touch with a 4-3 win over the Brewers in arctic conditions at Ballarat (though the new ground remained in magnificent shape). Lara was too strong in its 8-1 result over Bacchus Marsh, although the Tigers were just a couple of runs down for much of the game. Bellarine had the A Grade bye. www.geelongassociation.baseball.com.au

T.J. you were spot on except for the closeness of the game. It was indeed a tough day for the pitchers and the long ball account opened by Research in the first dig with 2 solo bombs, uh oh you would think but Heathmont answered with a single homer and a Grand Slam, however that was it for the Penguins and the Runners went 13-5 (maybe 14).

NC Rebels 3-0 in B Grade and 8-3 in BRes Vs Latrobe.
Both games lost time out at Latrobe with the rain, but the highlights for me was the way the Rebels got the 3 late runs under pressure, the way the Latrobe guys battled the game out and were keen to play and mop up the diamond a few times after a dissappointing season, and the way the Umpires officated in going off when the game called for it but not calling the game off too early and letting two teams that wanted to play play in what after all is Winter ball.

After a week where the AFL hit the headlines for some poor behaviour at a junior football match, which turned into a bit of a airing of all the ugly-parent syndrome happening at junior football matches, it was pleasing to umpire a junior baseball match yesterday where the coaches encouraged and coached their teams well, the players all enjoyed the game throughout, regardless of the score, and the parents encouraged and cheered players from both sides.
A credit to both sides and made a wet morning most enjoyable to umpire.

Didn't quite happen like that, a couple of errors in the first and we never recovered.
In regards to our side, it has been a very pleasing year to date and I would say, is setting the club up nicely for a few years to come. We are trying to play the kids (7 of them 16 or younger) in positions that they may of not played before, trying to get them experience all over the ground and not get bogged down into only a first baseman, or second baseman, etc.
I think the experiment is working with these kids swinging wood and playing against men that have been around for a while. Our 2 problems are pitching (getting that important out when needed) and we are a bit small on batting. Having said that, we are yet to be shut out and had some very close games where experience may of gotten us over the line.
I am more than happy with how these kids are coming on and, as I said earlier, should put the club in a position to be competitive in all grades for a few years to come. If there are other clubs out there thinking of or being in a position to be able to do this, it can only mean an improvement in Victorian baseball over the next couple of years.
Just my thoughts, hope you all agree.

It's a perfect development for Clubs that have extra sides and the standard ain't all that bad. Well done to Dingley on using B grade as a development for future Baseball.

Sorry guys, been out of action for awhile. In action in Bendigo last week saw Bendigo East against Strath Dodgers and Scots V Falcons. By all reports East had control of their game against Dodgers, with AJ Sherriff leading the way for them with 3 hits and 6 RBI's. Eventually East ran out winner 10-6 (sorry not sure who pitched, etc). The other game was Scots v Falcons, with Aaron Petri pitching for Scots opposed by Danny Plowright. Scots were able to get out to a 2-0 lead after 3, with some clutch hitting including a double from John Taylor. Falcons came back in the 4th, taking advantage of timely hits and couple of errors to jump to a 3-2 lead. They then tacked on 2 more in the 5th. Petri was throwing well, finishing with 10K's but couldnt get the full support of his field. Falcons on the other hand were able to take every out, including an over-the-shoulder grab in the last to keep Scots off the bases. Falcons eventually winning 6-2. Next week has a massive game in Falcons v East, with the winner likely to go straight into the grand final and have the all important week off. That is also the case in the B grade clash, while in the C grade any of 3 teams can finish on top with just 2 rounds to go. It remains a very even competition with no clear standout in any grade. Will be interesting to watch the next 5 weeks
