As KC said, we are getting to the business end of the competition. Should be a good day for baseball
A Grade
Croydon vs Ringwood - A somewhat unexpected loss for Ringwood last week while Croydon got the win they needed against Melb Uni to give them some breathing space from the bottom of the ladder. They would have to be a little unlucky to be relegated from this point, 2.5 games lead to NB. Ring should have too much power for Croydon here (at least on paper). Croydon have a handy gap percentage wise as well from Melb Uni, so as long as they keep this game close, a lose wont hurt too much.
Heathmont vs Greensborough - I find it hard to pick against Greens, but Heathmont have only lost the two games this season, so how do you pick against them? (prob only if playing research at the moment). Again, looking at a powerful line up, not to say that Greens isn't powerful, but I think that the penguins are stronger. Penguins should figure in the finals (der, they are sitting second), look out.
Knox vs GMBC - MATCH OF THE ROUND - Hard one to pick, Knox have not been the side I thought they may have been and GMBC are also not the side they were. Both teams are capable of destroying other sides and keeping their opposition down. Dare I pick GMBC? No. While they appear to have out-scored Knox, Knox did lose points due to a forfeit and have had 1 more wash out. A good game between two very good sides.
Research vs Melbourne University - Like Heathmont, Research are playing very well and not looking like losing too many times for the remainder of the season. I can't pick Melb Uni, they may only win 1 more game for the season (based on ladder position) and that could hurt. Sitting 1 game above NB, should they lose this week, they may find themselves separated only by percentage. Research way too strong, potential blow out.
Watsonia vs North Balwyn - Watsonia with a handy win last week, but I have a feeling about NB this week. NB with a chance to sneak up the ladder and push Melb Uni onto the bottom. Round 16 is going to be huge as Uni vs NB. Watsonia have been better than I thought they may have been and have shown enough to think they may get themselves closer to finals again next season.
B Grade
A few injuries last week to a couple of key players for some of the teams fighting for finals places. Big week for two teams in particular as you will see.
Bundoora vs St. Kilda - This kind of depends which St Kilda team turns up, but they haven't been too bad lately. This game is about 1 thing. Pride. the 3 bottom sides have only won 5 games between them so far. Not sure if St Kilda will enter B Grade next season, too early to tell, but maybe Panton Hill would give a better showing? Bundoora are still 2 players short of seriously challenging, they may need to try and convince some guys to come across for next season (Rebels were successful in this when MM dropped numbers and they are playing well).
Monash University vs La Trobe University - Uni games continue - La Trobe have been disappointing as well this season, if they did not lose two games through a clerical error they would be close enough to the top four, but they have not shown the same level of grunt as the past few seasons. Monash are only a game and a half off the top four, but I think they will fall short. They are finding this league a bit tougher than the other one and could also do with an extra arm or hitter to strengthen their finals chances for next season.
North Coburg Rebels vs Essendon - While Essendon have shown some improvement in some games, they are still quite young and will struggle unless DM pitches and is able to do some damage with the bat. He will need some support too. Rebels I would not say have been a surprise packet, however, with their inclusions this season have shown they are a contender. On their day they can beat any of the other teams, I suppose their problem is consistency. They need to put this game away and build for their round 16 class with ladder leaders Westgarth. Unfortunately two of the games before the Garth one are against the bottom two sides. It will be interesting to see how well they go in finals.
Ringwood vs Westgarth - This could be MOTR, but ladder positions will not change if Ring win, they will if Ring lose though. Big test for Ring who have found themselves in with a shot of having their A and B grade sides (and reserves) in the finals. Maybe they were not as silly as we first thought. Garth are legit! If they win their way back into A Grade, they could finish mid pack or higher straight away. They have some very good young talent and are working well as a team. JP has them going well at the right time of year. A loss here will not hurt them too much, but it will be a pretty big upset should they lose.
Waverley vs Forest Hill - MATCH OF THE ROUND - This has to be MOTR, FH find themselves out of the top 4, Waverley 1/2 a game in front. A loss for FH starts to make their chances more difficult, especially with an injury to John (although he looks to be starting, how injured did he get?). They are missing a couple of guys, so maybe this is a big danger game. FH do have a better run home than both Waverley and Ring though (IMO), so a loss here will hurt, but may not cost them overall.
Some very big games this week with only 5 rounds remaining after this one. Relegation and finals spots being fought for very closely and we should start to see the make up of finals in the next couple of weeks.

Nice write up although I have no expectations of a blow out against Melb Uni I hear they have a few of the Essendon boys back in the line up and are coming off a great win last week against Ringwood. I have no doubt it will be a tight game and hopefully we get the points

3 out of 3 for the NC Rebels today, the 1s snuck home 5-4 over a gallant Essendon in B Grade with the Cornish/Chooper Masters combo and off speed stuff keeping our 'young' blokes quiet. We had a real nice win Vs Diamond Creeks 1's in BRes (maybe 5-2?) with the Pres Andy Malthouse notching up 350 games with the club :-) and the 3s beat Northcote maybe 13-7 ? after giving up 6 in the first.

We got done by Westgarth 4 -1, Deeble used the 'zone' to his advantage. We struggled to string hits together. Big game for us next week. Our firsts got up over Croydon by 10ish

Huge day at Pioneer Park and Geelong Baseball Centre today, with East Belmont conducting its second annual "Go Pink for Cancer" Day. Great cause, although the haloes were out-gunned 5-2 by Deakin, who are looking good for the playoffs. Guild downed Bacchus Marsh 11-1 in seven, while league-leading Lara had some concerns before getting past Bellarine 6-3. Ballarat Brewers had the A Grade bye. www.geelongassociation.baseball.com.au

A grade MWBL. Heathmont 1sts one run winners over Greensborough. 10-9. Next week it's Research and Heathmont going head to head in what should be a crackerjack game.

Great day for monty, 6 wins from 6, with 2 of our teams knocking off the top team. Funny game at Knox in the late one, after we jumped to a 10-3 lead after 4, Knox kept coming and as we entered the last, 10-9. Fortunately we tacked on 2 more insurance runs to finish it off. Outfield was swamp like in areas, must have missed a mow for a few weeks.

Research looking pretty flat all day but managing to do enough to get the win over Melbourne Uni 5-0. Top of the table clash next week versus Heathmont promises to be a cracker!

Re Westgarth V Ringwood game comment "Deeble used the "zone" to his advantage. Didn't Ringwood pitchers have the same zone? What pitcher doesn't use the zone to advantage? From my observation Deeble used his accuracy and variety to dominate, backed up by some solid defence.

We had an umpire listed at Boneo but didn't show, not sure why but hat's off to the Boneo guys who were great.
Then this morning I find out Dandy's B3 game had 2 officials. Go figure.

Boneo were informed during the week that the umpire would not be there and they needed to supply an umpire and the B3 umpires were due to the washout at Oakleigh and the umpire moved to dandenong to help out so no issues at all

Buzz, it may have something to with sleeping arrangements at a certain seminar coming up.

Actually Puma, i would have been quite happy for you to have the two umpires. A little lack of knowledge on rules came to the fore. It certainly cost us more than it should have.

You could be right Buzz, just something that i heard from a umpire on Saturday. Rumours are fairly rife at present which makes for great story telling.
