The winter leagues have started - or are starting - on different dates.
I've opened this thread for any specific and/or general comment by way of news, results and information regarding club baseball or winter championships.
Stuart has written a superb preview for the DBA. By all means support that specific thread or any other started on any particular league (such as LVBA ).
The weather is looking good for both days. Best wishes to the Beer League and to the MWBL as it gets into full swing this week.

Deakin too strong 8-4 for Ballarat Brewers in the GBA this afternoon. Bacchus Marsh showed improved form but Saints still won 6-0. Guild dispensed with Bellarine 11-1. The Saints/Bacchus game was called early after evergreen Bacchus catcher John Pate was knocked out in a collision at the home plate. Chopper is at Geelong hospital awaiting tests. He is expected to be in hospital overnight and is currently being supported by family members and people from the local baseball community. We hope that all is well. www.geelongassociation.baseball.com.au

Reigning premier Lara downed Werribee 13-3 in the GBA Sunday game.
Chopper is still in the Geelong hospital and may yet be for a couple of days. Although he is more comfortable than on Saturday night, he still has some pain and pins and needles in his arms. The likelihood is that this is due to C4 and C5 neck discs being compressed - with associated swelling.
He says he won't catch next week.

Chopper got sick of the hospitality at Geelong Hospital and went home around lunchtime today (Monday).
Training this week, I wonder? Perhaps some work on his blocking and tagging techniques.....

Ballarat Brewers 6-0 over Lara in GBA (including five runs in the fifth).
Adam Irons complete game (eight innings) for three hits after a shaky first dig.
Deakin scored eight in the second to set up a comfortable 11-2 result over Werribee.
Former Lion Cameron Lyons drove in the go-ahead run for his new club (Saints) in the eighth. The 3-2 result was a reflection on what plate umpire Gary Hicks described as "a ripper game".
There are current problems with the BVIT website system, now including display of scores and photographs. If scores are not posted for your league, that may well be the reason

I saw a couple of games today. Greensbrough were beating forest hill fairly easily when I left Blewjas hit an opp grand slam.
Research beat Watsonia 4-3 in a good quality game. Winning run on 1st and the equalizer on 3rd when the final out was made. Heath Pendlebury hit a ridiculously long home run!!! Dave Dicker had 3 double and snelson made an outstanding play on a hard hit ball down the line.

I guess Ill stick this in here Nth Coburg Rebels (Ex Reservoir) and Monash a 5-all tie in B Grade today, Monash had a 2-1 lead most of the day in a good game but Resa fought back and went ahead 5-2 late and Monash tied it up in the end. lt all got a little sloppy in the last half hour it must be said when both teams had chances to win. Game pretty much played in good spirit. In B-Res Rebels maybe 15-5 over Monash after being down early on I believe.

In regard to the many expressions of interest in the well-being of veteran John Choppa Pate, who was knocked out catching for Bacchus Marsh two weeks ago......
Although he is still in a neck brace, Choppa is getting around and is back working a few hours a day. He has been progressively regaining sensation and is in far better shape than he was a fortnight ago.
The problem has been with a compressed spinal cord between discs C4 and C5, along with some shoulder damage.
He will be having another MRI scan on Wednesday and will be re-assessed by a neurologist early next week to decide on what if any action is required to facilitate full recovery.

Ringwood A grade lost to NB on the weekend 2 - 3. Big home run to DJ over CF. We just did not hit.
Porepunkah won 13 - 1 (?), I was not there, so do not know who they played, only that dad hit a 3 run home run to finish off the game.

Ballarat Brewers snuck home 3-2 over Bellarine and Deakin belted Bacchus Marsh 21-0 in a forgettable contest in the GBA this arvo. Lara 4-2 over Guild in a ripper game and Saints finally shook off Werribee 6-3, with Matt Ryan hitting a solo bomb for Saints. www.geelongassociation.baseball.com.au

Close game, runner on third, don't wind up and they can't steal home.
Nth Coburg went down 7-4 to Ringwood in D2. Good close game with both teams missing some chances, and Ringwood made the most of theirs when it mattered most.
Nth Coburg lost a lead late to lose 5-4 in B Res. Heard that "THE BIG SHOW" only just missed putting one out in his 2nd game back at the club after a season off. I'm sure Authentic might be able to tell us more about this game.
Saw the first 2 innings of Ringwood v G'borough. Ringwood strung three hits (bleeders) together with 2 outs in the bottom of 1 to score a solitary run. Odlum (?, maybe Meldrum, I struggle to see past the horror that is the teal) was keeping the Burras pretty quiet, and Masa the superstar managed to escape the 2nd innings with no damage after it was 2nd and 3rd none out.

Almost forgot...The U/13s combine of Nth Coburg and Bundoora had a hard fought loss to Watsonia going down by only 3. Saw 3 homeruns in the game, those little kids sure can swing it!

I got to see another couple of games again today. Monty 2's beat Research 7-1 some very good young players for monty. Thorpe pitched very well (apparently threw 6 perfect innings last week, which is amazing for a 15 yo), M Morris two hits, M Ellis 2 knocks, McQuiggan 1 hit.
In the ones McGrath was very good early and the score was 1-1 when he came out.
Over at La Trobe they beat Waverly 6-5 (La trobes first win and Waverleys first loss) again a very impressive bunch of young guys at Waverly. Dale smashed a double, Homfray had a 10 pitch walk while Beattie and Page both pitched very well. Not enough to get past La Trobe as Alex Turlea got the win pitching the complete game.

Winter players needed at Bacchus Marsh.
As results suggest, this once powerhouse club is in trouble and determined to rebuild. Players, experienced or new wishing to play this winter please contact Karen Wallace 0412934518 or head out to Masons Lane reserve Wednesday at 6.

I think that Steve George might need to update his article on the MWBL website. Has the A Res score for the G'borough v Ringwood game.

Latrobe Valley round 4 provided an exciting week in baseball, hinting at a very exciting 2011 premiership race. Churchill snuck home from 5-0 deficiet after four completed to run out winners 7-6 over a strong Traralgon side. In the other game Moe/Newborough and Sale played out a 3-3 draw that indicates the arrival of a competent and competitive team. It's clear that the gap in the LVBA is closing, and that can only be a good thing for valley ball.

6 for 8 i must concur, great game of baseball and well hit to yourself. Your spot on to altough we havent played all sides the standard of sides in both A and B grade has improved and early indications point to a tightly contested season, I for one am excited. The other pleasing thing is at the other end of the scale with the numbers of juniors at all clubs looking great.

Saints share equal top spot after downing Deakin 5-1 in the GBA. Guild played small ball late to set up a 2-0 win over Ballarat Brewers in a terrific game highlighted by superb defence and great pitching outings by Brad Egan (eight digs for Guild) and Adam Irons (nine for Brewers). Lara and Werribee were locked at 1-1 until Stuart Forbes drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the last for a 2-1 result in the Wildcats' favour. www.geelongassociation.baseball.com.au
