The weather may be starting to set in, but it has not deterred those hardy GBA/BBA souls, with a night game scheduled in Ballarat (Brewers vs Bellarine) for Saturday 5 May. A Reserves start at 4.00, A Grade at 6.30 PM. If you happen to be passing, drop in for a Bonox or something stronger...... What's news in your league?

A good week for baseball last week turns into a potential wet one this week. Knox is doing what it promised and putting the comp to the sword with their handy pick ups over the past couple of years. Who will be their main challenger?
Croydon v Melb Uni - I can't believe that I am picking Croydon, they are missing players and got lucky last week playing at home. This game could also be a battle for the 'safe zone' as in which of these teams (with Watsonia one would imagine) is going to finish on the bottom. Uni don't score many runs and will need to score more than 2 this week to be a chance.
Heathmont v GMBC - Monty unlucky last week and Heathmont with a close win. Monty must be respected, especially at home with the support on the hill. Too many good hitters with a quality thrower. Heathmont with changes again this week need to settle on a side and may need to look at pitching options.
Knox v NB - Hmmm, might pick Knox until they lose and then when they lose I will pick them again to bounce back. They should be too strong for NB. NB have a good group of young kids, but I think they need a bigger body in the mix. Knox have quality down the list and with Hussey on the hill should continue to hold teams to 1 - 2 runs a game.
Research v Greensborough - MATCH OF THE ROUND - How do you go past the grand finalist from 2011 as the MOTR? Big game is an understatement. The beep beeps will want to show that they were unlucky last season, while Greens will want to show it was meant to be. Big hitters one both sides, good arms, this one will be interesting with the team that controls the wet ball on the mound will be the team that gets up. McKay BACK!!
Watsonia v Ringwood - Ringwood should be too strong this week, as you look at Watsonia's side, there are a number of guys who have not been regular fixtures in the A Grade side. Ringwood stating to get settled and will look to bounce back this week after Knox last week.
B Grade
Hard to judge at the moment, I have a feeling we will start to see a gap between the tops teams and the bottom teams very soon. Essendon still struggling and St Kilda also win less, was it a good move?? Rebels, Garth and La Trobe all undefeated, could be a few important games this week.
Bundoora v La Trobe - While Bundoora did what it had to do last week, La Trobe is a different team all together. Uni held Ringwood scoreless after they had a big win the week before and I think that trend will continue. Uni are missing guys from last week, however they are still sharp in the field and if they get another game out of Freeth like last week look out.
Monash v Essendon - Until I hear that Essendon has new players, it will be the same as what I said about Knox, only in reverse. I don't see them winning a game until new players come. Monash will be desperate for a win to start their season and will definitely do so this week.
North Coburg Rebels v Forest Hill - MATCH OF THE ROUND - You would have to go with FH, although you cannot underestimate Rebels, they are the next team to challenge for finals IMO. FH would probably be expecting to play finals this year and may already be planning on their attack on A Grade next season, their danger this season may very well be Rebels who can shake it right up this season. Pick FH but may be an upset.
Ringwood v St Kilda - St Kilda may also struggle a bit this season and until they start stringing a few wins together I will not pick them to win. Ringwood have been there abouts the last two seasons and may be looking to play off in their first B Grade finals. They should get back on the winners board after this game.
Waverley v Westgarth - Garth beat FH last week (see comments above about FH) so should be picked this week. While they lost Lando to a galaxy far far away, they still have some guys who can get on the hill and hold teams to few runs. They also have a few guys who can flat out hit. A big week for them and I expect they will do Don proud (RIP). Waverley need a win this week over a top team, a loss here may question whether they will challenge again this season or not.
Sorry for the double posting, not sure what happened there, good luck this weekend, body behind the ball, it may skip a little with the rain and hard grounds.

Horrible weather. Best wishes to Uni's Tommy A, who broke three teeth in the early game after losing track of a steepling fly ball in the drizzle. (Croydon up 10-7.)

Yeah crap weather and even crappier result for us being beaten easily by Forrest Hill in BRes (maybe 9-1 ?) after is was a tight contest in the first half of the game.
TJ's BGrade 'Match of the Round' between our Nth Coburg Rebels boys and Forrest Hill ended in a 1-1 tie after a pretty good pitchers duel.
Our boys look good this year - Solid Pitching options and good solid 'D' is helping, if we can gets those bats blazing who knows what could happen !

Sounds like dangerous conditions to be playing in...hard to catch a ball if you can't see properly. I know we played in snow today.
Devils advocate - should the game have been playing at the time? We complain when the games get called when conditions are apparently OK. Tommy - I don't know you, but all the best fella.

Heathmont and GMBC played out a 0-0 draw today in terrible conditions.
Good pitchers dual, with conditions not very friendly to both sides hitters.
Great game anyway, with both teams looking dangerous with runners on at several times during the day.

Playing conditions pretty decent in the GBA, where Saints blanked Bacchus Marsh in seven and the Brewers were comfortable winners in a night game over Bellarine in Ballarat. Lara to host Deakin in a Sunday clash that may tell us plenty about where the Blues are at. Supporters will be coming from far and wide to see BV triple-MVP winner Ben Knuth suiting up for the Blues in what may be his last game on Australian soil. www.geelongassociation.baseball.com.au

(Croydon up 10-7.)[/quote] Ehhh, can only go on what we see, here's a recap of the last few years for you; 2008, Melb Uni scored 71 runs for the season at an average of 3.55 per game, the third lowest of the 12 teams. 2009, Melb Uni scored 95 runs for the season at an average of 4.75 per game, 5 teams out scored them with the other 6 teams around the 95 run mark. 2010, Melb Uni scored 56 runs for the season at an average of 3.1 per game, The third lowest of the 10 teams. 2011, Melb Uni scored 43 runs for the season at an average of 2.38 per game, the LOWEST in the league. 2012, Before yesterday Melb Uni had scored 4 runs at an average of 2 per game. Over the space of 4 years (plus 2 games for 2012) Melb uni has scored 267 runs at an average of 3.4. If we look at the last 2 seasons (plus 2 games for 2012), the average is worse still scoring 102 runs at an average of 2.68 per game. These numbers are not generally enough to win games. Compare this to some of the other clubs over this same stretch with varying degrees of success; GMBC 521 runs scored at 6.7 runs per game Greensborough 539 runs scored at 6.9 runs per game Heathmont 543 runs scored at 6.96 Croydon 411 runs scored at 5.2 Ringwood 460 runs scored at 5.9 Research 450 runs at 5.8 In Summary MF, Melb Uni don't score many runs, but like any team they may have a good game, you don't need to highlight a comment to make a point, obviously your boys had a good day and well done to them, but When I play Uni, I know if my team can score 5 runs or more we should win the game (statistics don't lie). Good luck to Tommy as well, don't like seeing anyone hurt playing our game. Have fun next week

Was down at Pakenham yesterday where the Pumas beat the Angels 6-4 in a tough B1 contest and 35-2 (?) in a surprisingly one-sided affair in B2. Berwick spoiled the day for the locals with a win in the B3.
From a personal perspective, I was last down at Pakenham's ground in 2008. On that day, they had eight for their seconds and forfeited their ones, later withdrew a team and struggled for the rest of the season. The main diamond was incomplete and those associated with the club could have been forgiven for giving up on the venture.
Now, the club has two diamonds, the main one with a full backnet, lighting, enclosed dugouts (was raining that day I played down there in 08) and scorers hut, a second diamond, complete with backnet, three senior teams, a junior set-up, and a social scene, including a function last night.
Congratulations to those who have worked hard to resurrect and then grow the club.

Thanks guys, the committee is doing an awesome job and the function went really well on Saturday night, we even had a "storage wars" style auction after one of the Berwick guys left his kit bag at the club. (Only kidding stu, Jade has your bag)
One thing we still don't have yet is change rooms so I hope they don't send the umpire out from the Dingley at Sandy game on Saturday who wouldn't start the game after refusing to get changed in the toilets.
A little bit precious?

Wow!!!!!!! Matt Carlile playing in Cheltenham's A1 DBA game at the new Tomato (patch) ground, hit a three run bomb, a solo shot and a two run homer in the one game. Top work from a real worker. Chelt's home page scribe recalls another player to hit 3 winter bombs in one game.....Andrew Russell.

Bendigo games from the weekend, East beat Scots 12 - 0 and report from facebook that Dodgers beat previously unbeaten Falcons. Falcons just got up previous week when time ran out with game tied and reverted back. Interesting season coming up. Sean Meldrum was playing for Scots, assuming in a 12 zip loss he didn't play.

Matt Gerraty cleared to Knox during the week after Monty and Greensborough play the stand alone game in rd 1 the week before everyone else. Knox asked the league administrator twice if he could play, league said yes TWICE. So he played in our 2's then had a swing in the 1's. The points were then taken away after 2 weeks. That's the whole story.

Dodgers over Falcons 10-7 on the weekend. The Dodgers purely out-hit the Falcons. GJ, I will clear up something - the week before Falcons got up over East 6-4, but the score was never tied (Not sure where your info came from). Falcons were coming up to bat in the bottom of the 7th when time was called. The score was 6-1 going into the 7th, East scored 3 in the top but the Falcons never got to reply. Overall, it is a very even comp with East, Dodgers and Falcons butting heads for the top spot. Scots have improved and will continue to get better as the season goes on (Not to mention their junior program is very strong atm!).

Bushman, I wasn't there at the end - relayed that way to me second hand. Bad info obviously. Seems the most even comp for many years - any team could win on any given day. Scots need some kids coming through though.
