As i will be up in Canberra as the Pitching coach of the Vic Team, i will be posting updates throughout the Women's National Tournament so that those who are interested in how the girls are going can get a bit of info.
The tournament begins this Saturday 7th April with the girls having a double header on the first day, a game against New South Wales Country and then a rematch of last years Championship Game against New South Wales.
The girls have been working really hard in the lead up to the tournament, training twice a week on top of their own club trainings. Must say a huge thanks to Kile Rogers and Sean Talbot who put their hands up to help out with the program this year. Was great to have you both on board, and look forward to your continued involvement in the future.
If anyone has any questions on the team, or would like info on anything as it happens in Canberra, feel free to post in this thread.
Wishing all the girls the best of luck in bringing home the gold medal, and also as they strive to be selected in the Australian National Team that will head to Canada later this year.

That's great news. Where can I find the names of the Victorian squad? Congratulations on your position as pitching coach!

P.S. Who are the likely catchers as the other part of the pitching team?

Is there no Vic White team this year or did they just not get enough players wanting to participate.

Jb, we didn't have enough at trials unfortunately.
However, there will be an extra 6 Vic girls playing at the tournament for different states.
Georgia Page and Emma French will be playing with ACT, and Nicole Garner, Erin Collis, Lauren Gibson and Ellen Goodrope will be playing for NT.

Good start by the Victorians, beating NSW Country 21-0.
Cat Row three scoreless and Urs Howard and Hannah Jackson scoreless innings in relief. Entire line-up contributed, with Sam Hamilton getting four hits to lead the Vics.

Nothing too surprising in that result. The game vs NSW is the big one they want to win on Day 1.

I noticed Amy McCann is on the Vic roster, but has not played. Injured? If so, a big loss, especially given her dominant hitting in last week's GF...

Lando is spot on MF. McCann had to work over the weekend, but has arrived this morning for today's game.
She will be a big addition to our hitting line up, and a big in for our outfield also.

Victorians bounced back well today, putting a 10 spot up in the first innings en route to a 17-2 victory over Queensland.
So far in their first three games, the Vics have scored 21 of their 40 runs in the first innings - they bounce out of the blocks very, very well.

Good win today, with Urs Howard throwing well, and our bats doing a lot of damage early.
Kate Psota and Amy Collins both 3 for 4.
Tomorrow up against WA at 4pm, Kate Psota with the start.

Another good win tonight, the girls taking it to WA and their number 1 starter, with a convincing 11 - 1 win.
Kate Psota continuing her great tournament so far throwing all 5 innings for 1 unearned run, and getting a knock as well.
Amy Collins is doing a great job behind the dish too.
Game tomorrow morning at 10.30am against ACT. Hannah Jackson with the start.

Wearnie - was there any discussion at the start of the tournament about more than one non national being able to pitch at this tournament?

Kanus, there was discussion about the number of non-nationals, but not the number that could pitch. The ABF capped the non-nationals to 2 per team.
Another good win today. Hannah Jackson throwing well for three innings, Autumn Mills and Cat Row both one each. Lots of hits, too many to mention.
The girls take on NT tomorrow at 1pm. Shae Lillywhite with the start.

Wearnie - Of the 18 games played up until the finish of day 5, there were 4 results that saw a win scoreline less than a 9 run differential.
Are we seeing a decline in pitching in some states? Are we seeing the improvement in hitters? or are we seeing a match up scenario where teams just dont want to go at some states and use any pitching?
its noted that a number of those lop sided games were games in which ACT and NT were playing.

It's a combination of everything you've mentioned.
There are some very good hitting line-ups out there now, but not as many good pitchers. BUT, in saying that, the good pitchers are saved for the 'tougher' games, which means some games become blow outs with lesser pitching on the hill.
Girls throw a lot of walks, it's the biggest thing in club baseball in all states. It certainly is becoming an issue at nationals too.
Semi-final for the Vics tomorrow. We finished second, so will play WA who finished third. Cat Row going off.

Tough loss this morning, losing to WA 3 nil. Pitching staff were fantastic again, bats just couldn't get it done. However, WA pitcher had a very good outing.
Girls will play off for third tomorrow at 10.30 against either NSW or Country NSW.
Hits today, 2 for Kate Psota, 1 each to Shae Lillywhite and Amy McCann.

The team came home in third place, beating NSWC 8-4 on Saturday. The team had a great week, just couldn't come up with the big hits that were needed in the semi-final game against WA. Overall though, the girls should be proud of how hard they worked and how professional they were all week.
We had 3 girls make the Tournament All Star team - Sam Hamilton at First Base Shae Lillywhite at Second Base Leslie Anglin at Right Field
And a huge congratulations to the five Vics who have been selected to the National Team: Amy McCann Sam Hamilton Erin Collins Bronny Gell Shae Lillywhite
And also Leslie Anglin was selected to the 5 person shadow squad.
Huge congrats to all of the girls, special mention to Erin Collins who has made the team for the first time after converting from 3B to Pitcher.
I will update later in the year about the World Cup, which will be played in Edmonton from 9th - 19th August. The team is scheduled to depart Australia on 4th August for a 5 day training camp/pre- tourney games.

Thanks also Wearnie 52. If the Vic girls came third, knowing the quality of the squad, it says a lot about the health of Women's baseball in Australia.

Kudos to the vic girls on a great tournament, and no offence meant to any of the girls that played in saying this, but it is a shame that we can't get the absolute best in the competition trialling/playing!

Hudson- curious to know what type of players you feel didn't trial/play at the recent nationals?

I guess just some of those senior players that have offered a lot in the past. I'm not sure on the particulars, some may have been injured or unavailable for whatever reason, but i just think there are some great players that could/would have made the team had they trialled. Even looking at the coaching staff for example (although, it is great to see some girls working their way into state coaching)

I wouldn't have thought that there would have been too many players that would have pushed for that team, and when you say past players, well with the fact that state players have had to come up with their own expenses each year now, its not that surprising to see some of them decide on other avenues rather than play in Nationals each year.
Over the previous handful of years the state team has also possibly, and i say possibly, not to offend any of the people involved, finished higher in the standings due to non nationals filling the void with japanese players previous, and this years canadian participants. Don't get me wrong, all very talented players in their own right, but it does give the sense of coating a problem or lack of depth in our top level especially on the hill.
How do we get past this, how do we bring new players in to the game, how do we develop our youth, do we have any youth? All questions that clubs with womens programs i'm sure are trying to figure out. Doncaster and Springvale have it more figured out than others, but thats just two clubs.
