shame Coach Phil didn't get to the Waverley game today - maybe his mind was already on North Balwyn business ??

Hi brewdeb2 welcome to the forum, get some facts straight, speaking to Mrs Nth Balwyn Coach today and Coach Phil is away at present with his real job and that is as a scout for the Atlanta Braves. The Nation was left in the capable hands while he was away.

Thanks for the welcome. No facts to get straight. Coach Phil was not at the game. The same as with many games during the season due to conflicting commitments. Just putting it out there that maybe it is not a good idea to have a head coach, no matter how esteemed, if that coach has multiple irons in the same fire. A forum discussion on the matter would be interesting.

brewdeb2 - I think that this would be a great thread as I totally agree with you. Several clubs and including mine had the same problem with our coach and assistant coach (both are paid to do these roles) were missing due to ACES commitments. Yes it cost good money and never discounted from the payment.

Brewdeb2, are you a junior parent and disappointed your son did not get as much game time in the 1's at Waverley as you think they should so now you chose to come on here to have a pot shot at Phil?
Maybe this is a more interesting conversation you could have with your club board or With Phil if you wish to be proactive with your concerns. Judging by the response so far, doesn't appear that the forum members are as excited as you about this subject.
Whilst I may agree that someone receiving payment for coaching should be there the majority of time, I think you could of raised the issue in a more suitable manner.

I do wish to disappoint you. No I am not a parent and have no connection genetically with the Waverley 1's. I have no involvement with the Waverley Board, however I am a very interested participant in Victorian baseball. In fact I am just an interested bystander who enjoys watching the Waverley 1's. As you rightly point out a coach who receives payment for services should be involved the majority of the time - pre season - during the season and post season for analysis. The dedication of any coach should see their involvement 100 percent to the end of the season. As the forum is here for discussion on all issues of interest to the baseball community - where better to discuss these issues. At the moment, we are discussing specifically a situation with Waverley - we could in fact be discussing the same situation with any other Victorian club. As much as it is a subject that may not sit well with the establishment, it is a subject that we are well within our rights to discuss on this forum. Please do not get too excited about my motives - I am using the forum to put forth my observations. If there is no interest then I will obviously disappear. However I would welcome constructive discussion on the subject.

mmmmm I think he had the same commitments last year, did ok you think. As for $$ committees make the call and would know the commitments agreed to. Phil brings a lot more to the table than on day coaching and Clarko and the rest of the coaching panel are as good as any in the league, so nobody disadvantaged.

Here goes....I think phil dale is an ornament to the game of baseball here, Borg in Victoria, and Australia wide. But maybe this idea thrown up isn't that far off the mark. Clearly his main source of income would be as a member of the braves organization. Hea also involved in both the national teams and aces organization. And to top it off he's the coach of the biggest ball club in the country. I think some are being a not hasty in condemning someone for ideas that are a little different to some on this forum, but maybe this one has a few legs. How far can one person spread themselves, and possible give thesame amount? Would he be better suited to let, say clarko, actually take the reins at waverley, so he can put more effort into the other baskets. As has been mentioned, I'm absolutely positive clarko would do a sensational job. Sure I'll be vilified....again...for this stance, but let's be honest, they missed the finals. Probably with the list they have, they should make it. Who's fault is it? Don't know, but from the outside, it could be construed that maybe he's not able to give his full participation, therefore, the side might suffer for it. I'm not saying that is what happened, but it may have be a contributing factor. Well see what happens. Does anyone know if he's been appointed for next year, at waverley?

Just on that list and you saying with the guys they had they should have made finals. They lost a few veterans from the year before including Karlsen, Hodges and Reinke. They only had Wearney for bout 7 games, Pugga towards the end of the year and Donnie and Rusty only threw minimal inngs. They had a number of guys, young guys, playing up and a relatively inexperienced pitching staff that got a lot of innings to grow this year including the two Pap boys, jarrod Turner and Jon Kennedy. I;m sure a number of people would have been surprised if you said two years ago that Jarrod and Luke Pap would have been doing a lot of throwing in the 1's. But they stepped up and did well. With the other 4 teams in the finals, 5th was probably about right. A game or two go a different way they are 4th, maybe 3rd.

You know I'm not really over who does what where at waverley. But they are well resourced, have a great history, and an unending line of quality kids coming thru. I reckon missing finals would have been disappointing for them. That's irrelevant now. Can you answer whether he's coaching there next season?

.And to top it off he's the coach of the biggest ball club in the country. I believe he also added the Presidency of that very same club to his resume this year.

Has anyone actually considered that it might not have mattered as to whether Phil was at the game on the weekend. Considering he left it in the more than capable hands of Clarko of Hoges.
If you consider who was playing and who has played for the 1s this summer many were in their first FULL season in first division with a couple having only thrown or played an inning or two in the over the past couple of seasons. I believe that this seasons results could be put down to a lack of experience as a result of loosing some veteran players and others due to Aces commitments and injury.
Therefore my argument is would it have changed the outcome of last weeks game or the season if Phil had attended every game?
Possibly but i doubt it. Waverley still managed to win games without him there.
To top it off when not with the Aces he was always down at training for waverley, giving always valuable insight into the game of baseball, if anything the players of North Balwyn will benefit tremendously from that and are in more than capable hands with Phil coaching.

The North Balwyn Pres is a smart guy as are the rest of his leadership crew. I'm very confident they have banked on having a great Lieutenant or two for when Phil is away scouting let alone at the Gold Coast. Didn't Rob Hondo coach them last year - I'm sure he would learn a heap from Phil - as may old man Hondo perhaps ;-) I reckon they will bank on Phil for 50% of the season or so and if so, still a good investment by the club.
Phil wouldn't be doing it for the coin...
As for Waverley - whilst disappointed in not making finals considering how they came from 4th to win last year (from memory), I agree with Larry - they should be relatively happy with the young guys performing as they did. As I mentioned earlier, perhaps having Chipper's Winter D League team has been a great investment in the club.

Would have thought after a couple of flags though, and a young team just missing finals action that he would be a front runner if he wanted the job again though. I reckon thats why Wav are one of the best clubs going around, because of the expectation of being there every year. So to a person you would think there would be disappointment over missing. All i tried to clarify was that they were stacking a group of young kids mostly against other teams who carried a bit more experience and game ready at that level. Thats my take 9right or wrong) from being someone who got to see them play about 8 games this year i reckon.

Does it really matter? Waverley has arguably the best person possible in both roles - after all (correct me if I'm wrong), but Phil makes his living out of baseball.
So they've got somebody in charge who is effectively devoting 40+ to baseball alone. Imagine what that could do for your program. I'm sure most clubs would be jealous of having somebody who is spending that much time thinking about the game, and what he can do for a club.

Phil is a fantastic coach and baseball person. I would welcome him at my club anytime, wouldn't matter what other committments he had. Just knowing that he would be around the place during the season and that he was linked to the club would be enough.
I don't know who in their right mind would suggest he wouldn't be great for their club - even with limited time to give due to other committments.

There is an old saying, "If you want a job done, give it to a busy person".
While I continue to be astounded by the volume of work that Phil takes on, he is a committed baseball person who has time and again proven that that he can handle the workload AND produce oustanding results.
He will make a huge contribution to player development and club culture at the Stingers, even though he won't be there for some of the games.
