For those with some passing interest in Summer League baseball: Upwey edged ahead of a dogged Werribee in extra innings, Cheltenham struggled before getting past Preston, Essendon set up a match-winning early lead over the Lions and Waverley blanked Malvern, while Melbourne was too strong for a paddling Blackburn and Geelong pinched a one-run win over the visiting Dragons as Summer League played a full schedule of Saturday games.....Aside from Division One, it was a huge day for club baseball, with all senior games on the same day. With the Aces' fate to be decided tomorrow (Sunday), it will be interesting to see what sort of crowd is in attendance. www.vicsummerleague.baseball.com.au/default.asp?Page=82605

Nearly saw one of the more bizzare plays ever today on the Preston Outer. The 'rubber' on the mound is a solid block and sits a bit too high at the moment, particularly when the pitchers dig out the loose stuff in front of it.
Anyway, runner on third, ball over the plate hit hard back up the middle, runner breaks home and the ball hit the 'rubber' and comes straight back to the catcher who swipes at the runner and nearly gets him at home !
Fielders Choice 10 perhaps ?

Sandringham 12 Chelsea 0. Pretty drab affair with the Dolphins never threatening the home side. Jeon 6 and Ryan Campbell a scoreless 7th in his firsts debut. Everyone seemed to hit with Tony Cevec getting four to lead the way while Declan Ferguson was again clutch off the bench.
Well umpired game too. Line umpire called a play on a Sandringham runner 'safe' from the middle when the runner was short of the base. Plate umpire immediately gave the right call of out. Good to see some sensible officiating even if it is against your team. Zone was solid all game as well. Must confess to not knowing who the 'blue' was but he may have an ABL career ahead of him. Having watched a substandard zone on Friday at The Show there will most likely be an opening next season.

I believe that your commennts show lack of knowledge of umpiring process and protocols. Comparing Senior umpire to an up and coming umpire...Realy?? Comparing Aces game vs Div 2 officiating that to me show lack of knowledge of game But than again I am not surprised. If you like to get more educated on umpiring, there is seminar every year which run for 3 days and perhaps you can discuss your issue with him. There is also a monthly meeting which the umpires do there training. Oh by the way your comments actually got this umpire into uncomfortable situation but I guess you know better... I suggest knowing before writing....

Rebels had a dirty day! O-4 across the board, with a few unfaltering scorelines. Ones the only really competitive game. Shame we were missing a couple of crucial players from the lineup. Might have been the difference in a one run game.

Maybe that is why they have 3 days for the seminar, one day for each level of strike zones????I agree with Stuart that the umps did a great job at Sandy on Saturday. Regards Colin

hey Wyatt 33. Not only were uour seniors losers so was your pathetic canteen. Ranout of rolls when your firsts started, selling them on bread and eventually on plates. Ran out of dimsims Ran out of some drinks. considering you had an opportunity to make a good profit on the weekend with 4 games Mulgrave shot themselves in the foot. On top of all that, Mulgrave couldn't even ring in their scores for the firsts and seconds for the weekend. What is going on down there? From Chocolates to boiled lollies.

Spot on with the food... but a lot of clubs don't have half the amount of selection of drinks that Mulgrave does...

True big plums, but at least you don't need a drinks station between the clubrooms and the grounds. But no it was not good, maybe some on the committe had a few other things on there mind, in fact the guy that normally does that stuff, was at the showgrounds coaching the under 12's in the pre game match. So was the prez, but still it wasn't good. As for the scores being phoned thru, maybe you should throw a blanket over the entire league. Plenty of clubs fail to phone thru results. It's not the end of the world, so maybe wait and see before you guys write the rebels off, for the season. I mean you guys won byva run in the ones, and I reckon the freckles started to tighten a little when winton went yard in that last dig. Still winners are grommets and the rest can please themselves.

Pirates got up 13-4 over the Lions on what was a lovely night at the ballpark.
Bubbie started for us and Jamie for them, Bubbie going 6 for none, Jamie got through about 4 with a few errors and walks interspersed with some very good hitting saw most of the damage done early. Darcy Mills came on for a couple and Errol Winnen in the last to close it out, Preston led 13-0 into the 7th. Aaron Petri came in to close it out for the Pirates but struggled a little for control, only getting a single out but Marco came in for what I believe was his first pitching performance of the year and closed it out.
With all the tribunal talk in the other thread they might have a player or two to see after what was a low point for the game. Umpire that did the plate didn't do a bad job IMO, missed a few here or there but that had very little to do with the result.

What happened Chilli? D'arcole Mills throwing - good effort there from a top bloke.
Melb d Ess 6-2. Liam Divine was very impressive followed by Al Hondo. Ess threw four guys but a solid win by the D's . Dons had a veeeery long post-game huddle.

Few of the Fitzroy boys and some crowd members were letting the umpire know they didn't like the way he called balls and strikes. I think it was Pawley that eventually got tossed, not sure if anyone got sent from the dugout or not. They really did have plenty of warning and should have pulled their heads in... One punter let him know he had no friends, no one liked him, and that is why his wife left him. I didn't put that in quotes as I can't remember the exact words, but that's close enough. Millsey drilled Huber, at least he will have something to tell any potential grandchildren one day!
