Just two rounds to go now in the DBA’s regular season, and there’s plenty on the line for five teams in both A1 and B1 grades. While Round 17 looks as if it may sort out a few potential options, it does appear as if many questions will be answered in Round 18 when all the chips are pushed into the middle of the table.
At the top of the A1 ladder, Dingley enjoys a three point lead, however have matches against the top two teams over the final two rounds. Cheltenham, the only team that can wrest the Minor Premiership off the Dingoes, has on paper an easy assignment this week against Mornington before the finale against Dingley.
Berwick has Dingley and Frankston and now must gain a point to be assured of a finals berth as should they lose to Dingley on Saturday and Frankston in Round 18 AND Dandenong beat Bonbeach comfortably this weekend, then the Dodgers, ladder leaders as recent as Round Nine, could miss out on the top four.
Dandenong must beat Bonbeach on the weekend to have any chance of finals action. If they beat Bonbeach, then they will require Berwick beating Frankston in Round 18, OR hope Dingley and Frankston both beat the Dodgers by enough runs in order for the Angels to sneak in front of the Dodgers on percentage.
That make it clearer for you?
Didn’t think so. I had to spend a while working it out myself.
As for Bonbeach and Mornington, only a hostile takeover of the DBA offices at gunpoint can save them. Unless coaches Richards and Warren can lay their hands on semi-automatic weapons inside a week, their respective clubs A1 chances are well and truly gone.
Looking at Saturday’s matches, I’m going to go for Berwick to beat Dingley in their clash. I’m not 100% certain Berwick will actually win, but I’m one for a little dram going into the final round, and a Round 18 match between the top two sides with the Minor Premiership on the line somewhat appeals to me. Of course, this means I’m tipping Cheltenham to beat Mornington too. I probably would have tipped that one anyway.
In the third game, Bonbeach take on Dandenong with the Angels season fairly and squarely on the line. Having won their previous two meetings, the Angels to me get the edge when it comes to favouritism, and a win by the Couch Burners would set up another finals scenario or two for me to go through next week.
The intrigue in B1 is for fourth position, where the incumbents now appear to be on shaky ground.
Chelsea are the current holders of fourth position, however Carrum Downs have come at a rush over the stretch run, and with an easier draw (on paper anyway), must now be favourites to join Moorabbin, Pakenham and Boneo in the top four.
The Cardinals have Ormond-Glenhuntly (who forfeited last week) and Cheltenham, while the Dolphins have the near unstoppable force that is Moorabbin and Dingley, and will need to win both should the Cardinals pick up two W’s over the next two Saturdays.
The Hunters should hold few problems for the Cardinals, while elsewhere, Pakenham should get their revenge on Oakleigh for the Oaks upset win earlier in the season. Boneo should see off Cheltenham, Moorabbin should leave Edithvale Road with the points from their battle with Chelsea, while Dandenong and Dingley go head to head in the thrilling battle for seventh position on the table.
In the women’s draw, Berwick can sew-up the Minor Premiership with a victory over cellar-dwellers Sandringham, who are destined to pick-up their second DBA wooden-spoon, while Melbourne University and Footscray will go head-to-head in a match that the students should win at their home at Ross Straw Field. First pitch in the double header is at 11am.
Good luck to all players, coaches and officials for the weekend.
