Went and saw a game today between forest hill and ringwood. Quite possibly the worst display of umpiring I have ever seen.

We got up over Bundoora today 9 - 7. Gave up 6 (I think) in the last inning. B Reserves got up as well. Keeps finals chance alive for both teams. Not sure what happened in the A Grade.

3rds got up 9-7 over St Kilda. If the thirds can win the lat two and hope both Footscray and Northcote lose both they are still a mathematical chance of making finals. If they keep rattling off 14 hits a game who knows?
2nds got done 10-6 against Knox. It was a back-and-forth sort of game, with Knox pulling away at the end. I need to find out what 66 is eating, as that bloke can flat out fly.
1sts struggled to put a team on the park, and not sure how the result will go considering the website says they didn't score a run, and I did see Adam Lawson launch one into CF. Maybe it turned into a walkover? Was a pretty good game early on, but I think that was about it from a Rebels outfit that tried hard but was clearly outclassed by a very solid Knox outfit. Leon put one out over CF, was a massive shot. Ayersey also stuck one out, to RF, that bounced off some poor ladies car.

We need to be balanced here, the chief umpire did a pretty decent job, missed a few ball / strike calls but in the main was ok. It is the line umpire that this issue surrounds. At least 6 abosolute howlers made, but worse the mans attitude is confrontationalist in the extreme. I have severe concerns for any team having the misfortune to him being allocated a final -

Balls that bounce for strikes.... Cmon. No disrespect to players in the lower grades but surely in a grade/reserves that is unacceptable.

In any grade the calls made were absolutely unacceptable - and for those not at the game thinking this is sour grapes nothing is further from the truth. This was not a couple of bang bang calls going against a team - this was bad call after bad call after bad call. His attitude was best summed up after a blown call on first leg of DP at second - waved safe - players said nothing and straight away umpire is into second baseman verbally. When cheif umpire commends a team on how they handled themselves in "very trying circumstances" you know that a real problem exists. I think the guy in question did some summer games a few years ago and after tossing blokes out of games regularly over first few weeks (with most getting off at tribunal) disappeared off the scene. Wonder why? enforced "holiday" perhaps?

While doing the plate in the A-Res game the umpire in question called a hitter out for batting out of the box after he fouled one of his leg, he then retracted it and spent a further 10 mins discussing it with the line umpire. He constantly held up the game on several occasions and this was well before he let loose on the A grade line.
I for one think the umpires generally do a great job and handle themselves well, and of course you can’t satisfy everyone, but his display on Saturday was horrible and a waste of everyone’s time (we only get 2 hrs a week!).

Agree - umpires generally do a good job. However every now and then you get this kind of situation popping up.
Umpires make mistakes just like the players but at least players get feedback from their coaches. How do umpires get feedback?
Wonder if it's feasible to have an 'umpire performance' feedback form so that the 'powers that be' can get some idea of how an umpire performs week to week. Of course it would require coaches/managers to be objective in their praise and/or criticisms.

Hey openeye, I agree with your sentiments about a performance feedback but this was tried and in the end it became a witch hunt that led to too many umpires receiving bad reports and nearly causing them to stop. I was also at the game and was a very interested onlooker; yes the base umpire was woeful in A Grade and should not be in that grade for some time. Maybe he needs some time in a lower grade to get things right, or help from a smarter senior one than the person who was plating!! One very good example, I was sitting some 30 metres from the playing area and on a "did he swing call" the hitter was already walking and the base umpire signalled a no swing... There was no dispute from all around me that the hitter went. Outs at 1st base were poorly called because of his positioning. Outs at 2nd base were poorly called because of knowledge and positioning. The blown call at third, I think was a pure brain F@rt.
Please don’t leave the plate umpire out of this, because he would have received the 5 pages of what he did wrong from some of esteem leaders in the umpiring ranks.

FHBC club coach not required to attend tribunal after being thrown out of the A Grade game against Ringwood, (with no penalty).
I guess this is a true sign of no confidents in the umpires decision making on the day!
