With just three rounds remaining in the DBA season, Dingley possesses a near insurmountable lead atop the A1 table, and if this week’s forum entries are anything to go by, at least one or two of their players are quite confident of their successful run through the regular season into the finals.
Cheltenham have been the gold standard in the league for the past few years following a few years of battling the Tomatoes for the pennant, however right now, it’s the Dingoes who are sitting at the summit. But will they be there when it’s all said and done?
Just below the lofty heights that Dingley currently enjoy sit Cheltenham and Berwick, who do battle at Farm Road, with both sides still having a bit to play for…as you’d expect when 2 plays 3 in Round 16.
For Berwick, they can keep their hopes of a top two finish alive with a win, and Cheltenham needs to keep their points column ticking over if they are to have any chance of sneaking the Minor Premiership off a very confident Dingley side.
I’ll go with the Full Time double of Cheltenham winning the game and the Berwick boys hanging around for a drink afterwards.
Down the freeway at Frankston, the Tomatoes, fresh off a season sweep of Dandenong last Saturday, can wrap-up their position in the top four this weekend, however they do have to do what they have yet to do in 2011 – beat the Bonbeach Blue Jays.
Mark Richards’ team sneaked a 2-1 victory in their first meeting at ‘The Patch’ this year before thrashing Frankston in their return meeting at Bicentennial Park. This time around, Frankston has everything to play for. Ladder wise, there’s not much for Bonbeach to argue the toss about, however they’d love nothing more than really putting a spanner in the works of the Tomatoes finals hopes.
Unfortunately for Richo’s men, with Frankston having it all to play for, I think they’ll run out winners here, provided they stay more patient in the batters box than they did the last time the two teams did battle.
Down at Mornington, the Pirates, who are still working hard despite the W’s simply not coming, will look to break their season duck against a Dandenong side that must put together wins in their next two matches and hope results continue to go their way in order to Bradbury their way into the top four.
The positive news for the Angels? Following their previous two losses to Frankston, they’ve bounced back with back-to-back victories against the Pirates and Blue Jays, so if they can keep such a form line going, then the pressure will somewhat be on Frankston to win on Saturday, or have to beat Berwick in the season finale in order to make the four.
Dandenong to triumph for mine, and come the end of the ninth innings, I’m sure the Angels boys will be on the grapevine trying to find out the result from ‘The Patch’.
There’s plenty to play for in B Grade this weekend, with the Dolphins potentially able to all but secure their top four place, while Carrum Downs are needing the stars to align to have any chance of overtaking the Edithvale Road lads.
The Dolphins venture to Oakleigh, where on paper the Dolphins should win and win well, however Oakleigh did knock-off Pakenham earlier in the year, so the while Chelsea will be looking for a big win to boost their percentage, they will first of all have to assure themselves of the ‘W’ before they start working out how much they can win by.
The Cardinals bubble may not have entirely burst, but it was certainly deflated somewhat in a big loss to Moorabbin last Saturday where the not only missed out on the two points but lost some valuable percentage in the process.
They would go in favourites over Dingley this weekend, but I have heard rumblings of a bit of unrest in the squad either during or following the game last week, so provided they’ve patched things up, they should be favourites. I’d have tipped Dingley to upset their applecart somewhat, however losses to Ormond-Glenhuntly and Cheltenham in recent weeks almost disqualify the Dingoes from favouritism, so the Cardinals for mine.
Down at Pakenham, the Pumas host Boneo as the hosts look to keep their Minor Premiership hopes alive, while the Braves can confirm third place, and keep their own double-chance hopes alive.
I’m well entrenched on the Pakenham bandwagon (until the finals at least), and having scalped the Braves 8-4 down Woop-Woop in their only meeting this far in 2011, I can’t see any reason why Pakenham would go in as anything other than favourites on Saturday.
Elsewhere, Cheltenham will look to wrap-up sixth when they host Ormond-Glenhuntly, who are desperate to avoid the wooden-spoon, while Moorabbin will have no excuses should they lose at home to Dandenong.
On Sunday, it’s again the women’s time to shine, and the early game at Monash between Berwick and Melbourne University should decide the Minor Premiership.
Uni hold the slight advantage, having taken over sole position of first following Berwick’s loss to Footscray last weekend, however a Berwick win here would all but assure them of the Minor Premiership, with their percentage being far superior.
Had they won last week I would have been tipping Berwick, however their loss does make this a fifty-fifty proposition. We’ll make this an interactive tip. Grab a coin and toss it in the air. Heads for Berwick, tails for Melbourne Uni.
Which way did it come down?
In the late game, Monash hosts Sandringham, and look for the students to finish their season in style with a victory over the Royals.
Good luck to all players, coaches and officials on the weekend.
