Firstly, an apology for last week's lack of a report. I'd like to say I was holding out NFL and NBA style for better pay conditions, but the wife's birthday, the mother-in-law's birthday and a big work week largely worked against me.
Hopefully, all will be forgiven with a preview of the run home in all senior grades.
A1
24 – Dingley
21 – Cheltenham
19 – Berwick
16 – Frankston
15 – Dandenong
13 – Bonbeach
4 – Mornington
Remaining Games:
Dingley - @ Bonbeach, BYE, @ Berwick, v Cheltenham
Cheltenham – BYE, v Berwick, v Mornington, @ Dingley
Berwick – v Mornington, @ Cheltenham, v Dingley, @ Frankston
Frankston - @ Dandenong, v Bonbeach, BYE, v Berwick
Dandenong – v Frankston, @ Mornington, @ Bonbeach, BYE
Bonbeach – v Dingley, @ Frankston, v Dandenong, @ Mornington
Mornington - @ Berwick, v Dandenong, @ Cheltenham, v Bonbeach
I think the top three are safe, with the top two, for mine, secure as the teams that will earn the double chance. Just who gets to host the Second Semi Final will most likely be decided in the final round when the two teams go head-to-head in what should be a Second Semi preview. Will one go easy a week out from the finals? That’s still to be seen.
Berwick should do enough to hold onto third position, and a win over Mornington on Saturday should all but cement a home First Semi Final, however the race for forth position is still up for grabs, with three teams fighting over the position like seagulls over a hot chip.
Frankston has a tenuous one point hold on fourth over Dandenong, however we will know more as to who is the favourite to finish fourth come Saturday night after the two teams have done battle for the third time this season.
The Tomatoes have won both meetings so far this season, however the winner on Saturday is one that cannot be predicted with any confidence as both teams have been hot and cold throughout the season. I’m going to pass on a tip here as this one is a real 50/50 match.
Of the two, I think Dandenong has the better draw of the two – a home game with the team a point ahead of them and two away matches against the teams below them. What may come out handy in the long run is the last round bye. It can be hard to win in the final round in order to get into the finals. In 2011, Dandenong doesn’t even to have a player in uniform in the final round to put pressure on the Tomatoes, who will have to play Berwick in Round 18.
Bonbeach is still a chance at a finals berth, however they have four games remaining (no bye for them), and to have any chance, they’ll have to win their last three games, which does pose a bit of a problem for coach Mark Richards, whose side is yet to even win two matches in succession so far through 2011. They do take on Frankston, Dandenong and Mornington in those last three games, so the draw is as good as it can be, but it’s hard to see them running the table from here. If they did, they’d have to change the nickname from the Blue Jays to the Bradbury’s.
As far as this weekend’s games are concerned, I’ll pass on a tip for Frankston and Dandenong as you can’t pick either with any confidence, while Dingley should account for Bonbeach and Berwick do likewise against Mornington
A2
26 – Dandenong
22 – Dingley
17 – Berwick
16 – Cheltenham
14 – Frankston
The Couch Burners have a monopoly on the Minor Premiership and Dingley will have second place secure by the end of Round 15 after they dispose of Bonbeach.
Berwick should have no dramas remaining in the top four, leaving the fourth spot between Cheltenham and Frankston, however the % advantage Cheltenham has over the Tomatoes should ensure it is the Rustlers who see September action this season.
A3
21 – Berwick
18 – Bonbeach
18 – Cheltenham
14 – Dingley Gold
13 – Dandenong
12 – Dingley Blue
Ben Bartlett’s boys have a lock on pole position, while Bonbeach and Cheltenham will fight it out for second, though Brett Freshwater’s band of merry men to me should sneak second when it’s all said and done. Never fear Cheltenham fans, your boys will still make the four.
There is a three way battle for fourth, with Dandenong and the two Dingley’s all eyeing that final spot in the four.
Strange to say, but even against the two Dingley’s, I think the Angels may sneak fourth here. The Golds have to face stern opposition each week, while the Blue don’t have it easy and will have to sweep matches against the Gold and Dandenong to have any show.
It won’t be easy for Dandenong, but I feel that if they can beat the bottom two teams over the next fortnight, then fourth position will be theirs to lose.
A4
26 – Dandenong
20 – Frankston
19 – Berwick
17 – Cheltenham
Only the finishing order for second, third and fourth is of interest here as Cheltenham is six points and 5 ahead of Dingley for fourth position.
Berwick’s games against Cheltenham (Round 16) and Frankston (Round 18) will be the pivotal two fixtures for mine. I can’t see Cheltenham taking second, so that ROnd 18 game looks likely to be the determining fixture in regards who gets the double chance.
B1
24 – Moorabbin
23 – Pakenham
20 – Boneo
18 – Chelsea
16 – Carrum Downs
Remaining Games:
Moorabbin: @ Carrum Downs, v Dandenong, @ Chelsea, v Pakenham
Pakenham: @ Chelsea, v Boneo, v Oakleigh, @ Moorabbin
Boneo: v Ormond-Glenhuntly, @ Pakenham, v Cheltenham, @ Oakleigh
Chelsea: v Pakenham, @ Oakleigh, v Moorabbin, @ Dingley
Carrum Downs: v Moorabbin, @ Dingley, v Ormond-Glenhuntly, @ Cheltenham
Round 18’s clash between the top two looks set to determine the Minor Premiership, though both have to do battle with teams from the top five on two occasions before their final round show-down. How both fare at Chelsea will go a long way to determining who has the edge headed into Round 18.
Boneo face a tough trip to Pumaland, however should win the other three matches in their fixture, so they should hold down third and secure a home final.
Bizarrely, Chelsea face two easy away matches, however their two home fixtures will go a long way to showing if they are contenders or pretenders this season. If they win one of their home games, then fourth place should be theirs. Win both and they may even challenge Boneo for third.
Carrum Downs still won’t go away, however they face Moorabbin this week, which likely leaves them with a scenario of having to make up (at least) a game on the Dolphins with just three rounds remaining.
I still find it hard to see the top four changing, though Round 15 may make the whole situation clearer.
At the lower end of the table, Dandenong, sans Nathan Cook, should still have too much firepower for Oakleigh, while Cheltenham and Dingley is a real toss of the coin affair, though I think the coin will eventually rest in Dingley’s favour. Boneo should also account for Ormond-Glenhuntly down the way.
As previously mentioned, Chelsea’s game against Pakenham is a big game for both sides and is a fixture I just can’t see a winner too. I have been a big fan of Pakenham’s success in 2011, however the Dolphins at home are extremely hard to beat. The home advantage is all that gives the edge for the Dolphins for mine, but I won’t be surprised to hear of a Pakenham victory when the results are posted.
If Chelsea win, then Carrum Downs game with Moorabbin becomes a must-win affair, and I just can’t see the Cardinals overcoming the all-conquering Panthers at this point. No doubt that the Cardinals are on a tear, however I can’t go past Moorabbin on Saturday.
B2
25 – Chelsea
20 – Pakenham
18 – Dandenong
15 – Boneo
15 – Dingley
14 – Carrum Downs
The Dolphins have headed the league throughout the season and Drederick Tatum style ‘congenital heart defect’ could prevent Chelsea from taking the Minor Premiership.
Pakenham’s game and % advantage over Dandenong should see the Pumas take second and the Angels third, however three teams are still vying for fourth position.
Dingley and Boneo are on 15 points with Carrum Downs a further point behind, and I wonder whether the Cardinals can come from behind and sneak fourth position. They do have the easiest draw of the three, though they will have to beat Dingley in Round 16 to have a good shot at fourth position. If the Dingoes win that one, they could almost see the Cardinals off there and then. Boneo is currently holding fourth, but via a quirk in the draw have to play at Dandenong in Rounds 15 and 18 and also have Pakenham along the way. They’ll need to win two of those games to have any chance and that’s tough to envisage.
B3
26 – Bonbeach
22 – Chelsea
15 – Carrum Downs
13 – Dingley
12 – Dandenong
The top two are secure in their positions and Carrum Downs should make it, though Dingley’s % advantage means that Dingley could easily take third position from the Cardinals.
Much depends on the Dingley-Dandenong game in Round 16. Dingley win that and third position is an option for Jason Delange’s class of 2011. Lose and the whole shooting match for third and fourth is up for grabs.
WOMENS
21 – Berwick
21 – Melbourne University
15 – Footscray
10 – Monash University
5 – Sandringham
Just three weeks to go in the women’s division, and only top position is the one that is being contested over the last three weeks as Footscray, Monash and Sandringham all but certain to finish in their current positions.
Next week’s battle of the top two teams will decide the Minor Premiership, and I think Berwick will reign supreme come the end of the regular season, with Melbourne University having to settle for second after fifteen rounds.
For the weekend’s games, I’ll back Melbourne to win the battle of the Universities, and Berwick to be too strong for Footscray.
Good luck to all players, coaches and officials for the weekend.
Hopefully, all will be forgiven with a preview of the run home in all senior grades.
