Just got home from japan to find ringwood have no team and dv have very young team. Can LV be the underdog and win division 1 this year? Where are all the DV and Ringwood players? Bit disappointing to see!

Beware the Valley - could be the first team ever to win Div 2 then 1 in consecutive years. 6 for 8 trying to play down their chances - with Prior & Power to throw all weekend against weakened Div 1 teams they are a big shot.

Dandenong won two and lost one to lead Divvy One after Day One. Sunraysia is undefeated in Division Two. www.geelongbaseball.com.au

Latrobe Valley has won its first Division One winter championship (3 zip over Diamond Valley in final). Sunraysia over North-East 7-2 in Division Two final. Nice work, forum tipsters. www.geelongbaseball.com.au

Gee its sad to see the Winter Championships receive such little support.
The DV team was nothing more than a Watsonia Practice Match squad. Pretty sad reflection if that side finishes Runners up, taking nothing away from Latrobe Valley at least they showed a bit of support for the Championships took a decent squad and came home with the crown.

I went to Geelong one year to play in this tournament and can say it wasnt much fun playing in the freezing cold. The first game we played was on the Saturday morning, first pitch at 8:30am. I was playing right field and couldnt see the batter because of the fog.
I found the tournament was a distraction from the evenings "piss up". You might find why guys arent interested in going any longer because this is what it has turned into??

If you were still intoxicated during the first game you wouldn't of felt the cold at all... I heard that most refused to play as a silent tribute to last years banned DBA team

I heard that most refused to play as a silent tribute to last years banned DBA team I had an idea that was the case - but if that is true, I am sad. Whatever happened last year and whether it was handled appropriately should be irrelevant now. Instead of a protest to show 'support' to last year's team, the baseball community (ie. the players) should have taken positive action to fix the problem. I would like to know the point (aside from showing support) of not playing the game most of us love? We have a hard enough time promoting the bloody game without lowering the level of competition due to petty reasons. I would hate it, as a player, if LV finished last in next year's championship. But if it was because Ringwood, DV, GBA and DBA took their best 15-20 blokes away, I would accept it as a supporter of the game. It would be good for baseball. If positive action isn't taken, we will lose the winter championship because i doubt BV will want to host a grog trip for substandard teams. The last thing we need is less baseball and less socialising between players.

Been reading KC's proposal for a new long weekend championships, and don't necessarily agree. Given that this years Div 1 wasn't the best stanard ever, but I defy anyone to watch the likes of North East & Sunraysia and tell me they are not giving their all and having a good time as well. There can be nothing gained by stopping the country based teams playing in the championships as they are. Even Bendigo, with a lack of numbers to pick from, still rolls out Casey & JD to support the young guys in the team. Whilst DDD was in charge of DBA, they always played it hard and were in the final most years (or thereabouts). Only for the farce of last year, this would have continued. The only association that doesn't appear to take the weekend seriously is VWBL. The DV have sent strong (but understaffed) teams away up until this year, but Ringwood & City have all but disappeared. (which is a real pity for the few guys in those leagues that really want to play) If the city based teams want to give it up - then fine, make that decision. Leave it to the country teams to continue waht is a fantastic weekend of baseball and comraderie for them. PS: Reggie, sorry I missed you on the weekend.

Latrobe Valley, Sunraysia and North-East always approach the series with a positive attitude and still manage to have a great time. Last weekend was no exception and it really was not surprising that Latrobe Valley won Divvy One. They clearly deserved to.
I think it's fair to say that those leagues have a generally greater enthusiasm for the series because many/most of their guys don't play summer.
VWBL is one of the issues, gj. Correct. But when you consider that the VWBL has 40-45 % of all winter players in Victoria (guesstimate), we cannot pretend that a series without the VWBL involvement could constitute a "Victorian Winter Championship". It would become something like the old lightning premiership at Wangaratta - a fun weekend interrupted by some baseball. There's nothing wrong with that - if it's what the players want - as long as we do not claim that the series is anything else.
It would be great if the Carnival could somehow "remorph" as it was 30 or more years ago. But many things have changed and a miracle just won't happen in this case. My concern is that the Carnival is reinvented in such a way that it will be truly representative of winter baseball, that it will have credibility and that it will give winter players - in all leagues - something to aspire to. The "All-Star" idea is a potential way of achieving those goals.
It comes down, in the end, to what the players want and what pressure - if any - can be brought to bear by associations to have players make themselves available.
Although the "City" side dropped out a few years ago, there's been a disturbing lack of interest in some associations fielding their best side in the past few years - or even in playing. DBA did its best under the circumstances this time, DV had issues with player depth, GBA had a side mostly of kids, Bendigo has a smaller player pool, Ballarat had a group of its best players not available (either for all or part of the series) and there was no Ringwood or VIS.
And the series was in Geelong. Next year it may well be in Mildura. Lovely place to hold the series, with a progressive association that is really having a crack at developing the game. But under the current structure, it's hard to be optimistic about the quality and the number of the teams who will make the commitment.

first of all well done to everyone who played the weekend, i think if you look at teh results there were some very good games of baseball played and myself personally and the whole lvba team enjoyed the weekend tremendosly. It was a little bit dissapointing to see a couple of sides unable to put there best side in and i think gj is exactly right in what he is saying. We in the lv love going away on these weekends because for some it is the highest quality baseball they will be involved in and im sure its the same with other country teams, if it is taken away from us it will definatly hurt our league and im sure the other country leagues as well, but im also in favour of some sort of restructure to get the city teams keen again, im not quite sure how but im sure it can be done

So eloquently put as usual KC. I don't disagree with anything you say, but my question is why change a great weekend for the country guys just because the city associations can't get off their ass. Either get them involved or just call the weekend the Victoria Country Champs. And, I was just old enough to get to go to Wangaratta once before my team was asked to please consider another sport. I don't remember any baseball being played? ?

I think it's fair to say that those leagues have a generally greater enthusiasm for the series because many/most of their guys don't play summer. Just had a look at the LV team - only six of 15 didn't play summer last year, though three of them have done so in the past few years. I think we just like going because we have fun and get to play good baseball.
