Good to see all the money paid to recruit players to win a flag at Chelt hasn't caused any of these problems ....... well they mopped up most of the blood off the clubhouse floor and walls

Thats ok psych01 - i'm sure if we knew who you were then we wouldn't like you a great deal either. chardy you mentioned dingle wilson tierney etc but you never mentioned yourself. i think you are too busy inside the changerooms kissing the mirror not everyone has the time to devote to coaching kids unfortunately. Let me guess, that makes me a bad person doesn't it. Baseball doesnt pay my bills or cook my dinner so when i'm not at baseballl I have to work or spend time with my partner and kids. Once? I heard a rumour he keeps a mirror in his glove when he is on the mound... :-P Pretty sure that rumour started at Sunshine one day, I love this sort of thing - just makes me want to beat you more and more!!!

No, no, no - I don't hate Blackburn - just half the Blackburn frst grade side ;-) funny part is you sit here being a 7 foot 110 kg KEYBOARD WARRIOR. You know who I am, feel free to let us know who you are. I bet I know where all this hating has come from. Someone told you or your son once they should be in the 1's and you believed it when in actual fact you werent a 1's player and just want to HATE Blackburn because of this. Thats who you are - until you want to tell us different.

No panther - my point is about impact to the existing player base within a club. What message does it send to young 17 year old Freddy who is the starting up-and-coming centrefielder in second-grade when your club goes out and chases an established CF to fill a "hole"? What happens when the club poaches 2, 3, or 4 players from other clubs over the next couple of years? Either young Freddy has to suck it up "for the good of the club" as Chardy would argue, he looks for opportunities at another club (ala Cheesman, Hubbard, Passlow, Dicker, Johnstone, Mann, Irving, Bumstead? at BBC), or he packs up his bat and ball and goes home. What message to the kid hey? You're not good enough to play first grade at our club and never will be so we'll replace you with a player from another club? And by the way, we'll pay him, or waive his fees, and maybe give him a uniform. But you Freddy, who have played ten years of juniors here, you have to pay your own fees, buy a uniform, and sit in second grade for the next few years even though half the coaches in the league would give their left nut to have you in their first grade side... END RANT If Freddy doesnt like it, he needs to play better! Having someone better in your spot in the lineup should make you want to get better so you can push him out. that kind of accomplishment feels alot better than being in the 1st grade coz the only other guys are 16 and not yet good enough to make it. Having it on a platter isnt the answer either. I came up behind guys like Greg Brown, Matt Gourlay, Ben Paturzo, Anthony Smith. I wanted to pitch for the 1st's so i worked hard and eventually got a spot. It's no different for me now. There are guys pitching in the Major League clubs over here that i know, stuff wise, i'm better than. They are proven vets and the only way to take their job is to play alot better than them. Jamie Moyer is a perfect example... The guy is 46, has below average stuff (would probably get smashed in the VBA) but he's proven and he keeps his team in the game. Ive sat behing that stick for 4 years and i'm still trying to snag his job. Granted, i had a brutal year this year, but i still want it bad. He stands up in the clubhouse, day one of spring training and challenges every pitcher in the room to take his job! I think that having a solid 1sts team is imperative! Juniors show up to watch and idolize the players and it gives them role models to aspire to. Granted it can go too far, but i dont think its as big of a deal as your making it out to be. Baseball in Australia wont get any better if no one has to work hard to get there. As for paying players.... Again it can get a little overboard, but i aint opposed to it entirely. If you can make an extra buck here and there then why not? As for the 1sts not helping out after training, i dont know how it is at BBC but all youngsters get a little rookie treatment. It still happens over here at the ML and AAA levels. Its all about time at certain levels. Might be hard to grasp but it's good for the game. I know club ball isnt the same thing and its more about fun with your mates etc, but as someone who has gone trough it over here and back in my early years at chelt, it was a good thing. Sorry this went on, i was on a roll. So much to say, so little space! Just saying what alot of people would agree with! then again there will be those who dont, each to there own

As a man of many uniforms myself. i can only tell you why i left the muligrubs when i was a lad. it wasnt for the cash or the big head, it was because i wanted to no if i was good enough to play div 1. mulgrave was never going to give me that oppertunity. they let me go and i always stayed in contact and went to functions etc. this is the club i lernt the game and i owe everything to them and they let me go no hard feelings. i always told them i would return which i later did. i loved it at the donny dome but when u get a bit older and start working more hours it got harder to drive there 3 times a week. (springy rd peak hour) after 5 years it took its toll and i wanted to play with some mates at springy whch was around the corner this is the funny thing.. i went for my clearence and donny knocked me back. lets get this straight i love it there and would still be there if i didnt live so far. so it went to appeal. can you believe this i wasnt a jnr and i came from another but they knocked me back. so i go to the appeals and tell them that i loved it at donny but due to work it was harder to go to trainigs etc. The so called head hontchoes from the vba came back after ther secret meeting from closed doors and said "we are denying you of your clearence". i said " exucse me, i said why. he said we dont have to tell you why. then i lost it. i said "who the hell r u to tell me where i can play or not. i pay my fees and am not under any contract with nobody. he then said " do u no where you are" trying to scare me. what a clown. so i was a pissed that donny put me in this situation and rang the pres and said i wont be playing and would rather not play ball at all. thankfully we sat down and they understood why i was leaving and we sorted it out. heres the thing no has the right to tell u where you can play or not. if you pay your fees you can decide. i understand that potching jnrs is not cool at all but if the kid wants to go how can u stop him. as lond as you dont be bitter and close the door behind them they will always come back. why stop a player from playing with other mates they have because thats were you started as a jnr But if you take cash then thats a whole new ball game

nudrun....
Well spoken! A sincere and personal posting on why players play where they do, in this amateur sport of ours.
Expression isn't too flash (the forum police can work on that!), but the sentiments and the honesty are spot on.

Ok, Snacks pointed out on an earlier thread that Melbourne might have paid players to improve their top team and help develop Juniors . Others may think it went along the lines of, MCC :- "We are an elitest sporting body and we want you to be at the top statewide. So here's 15k , go buy a team and win the Div 1 flag" MCC Baseball Section :- "ok thanks" Either way wouldn't it be interesting if all clubs had that sort of disposable funds over and above the normal running costs involved in playing in the VBA. We've seen on this forum many pros and cons for hiring mercs to help your club and most claim to have a no pay policy. How would you spend it if your club had 15k available? You might pump it all into coaching and development. You might take it off all playing fees and make it dirt cheap to play for all members. You might bring in an import. You might go and get 7 clako players. It seems even if payments are being made here or there, the majority of the mercs are doing junior development work to help improve up and comers.
Just gotta feel for the low budget clubs that don't have 15k available when some do.

Anyone who takes money from a club purely to play is at best naive and ignorant. At worst a bottom feeder raping there club and the sport. The only thing worse is those doing the paying.
Justify taking money out of a teammates pocket and putting it in your own.

STMF - got all the respect in the world for you mate (although you can be a bit forgetful at times!)
Your work ethic, perserverance and commitment to your club is unusual in kids these days. Unfortunately we are bleeding juniors from our clubs ATM - dunno what it is, but the hunger doesn't seem to be there anymore as it was in our day so we need to 'look after' them more than we used to.
BTW - I still think the umpires deliberately squeezed you out in Oakland!

No-one could compete with that! ;D

.... Your work ethic, perserverance and commitment to your club is unusual in kids these days..... I have to disagree with you there psycho1. I think our recent pro signing kids and college kids have shown fantastic commitment to their clubs for the most part. Look at all these guys for example Geelong Ryan, Biddle, Edlich and co, Waverly Karlsen, Hendrix, Upwey Aryes, Huber Essendon Hipke, Lindsay, Davies Chelt Blackleys, Gourlay The list goes on and on (and I know ive missed a number of blokes) of guys who have achieved success away from the club and come back and given to the clubs that got them started. I think that part of our baseball culture is well.

Not angry, just tired of blokes trying to convince themselves that the mere fact of their presence deserves $$$. Cause after all they are so great for the the kiddies. ...Please I for one would like to see some ACTUAL PROOF for a change that ALL of these players are being paid. It seems that once a team wins - their players are being paid. Personally, I don't know any players that are paid at my club - I know I have been offered money to go and play at others and have stayed to play with my mates. I know when I played in Canberra that my club spent money every year to bring out 2 or 3 players from the US and Canada, it brought the young kids to the club to look up to these players and brought more kids to games with their parents to watch them play and ultimately make the club stronger than other clubs who chose not to bring in some imports. I think a lot of this anger comes from people who believe they should be in a 1st Grade team when really they arent a 1st grader just yet. Almost seems as if these kids want everything given to them rather than to work harder for their spot - some people forget that we were all 16 or 17 or 18 once before too and there were guys in front of us as well. anyways - I feel like i'm talking to a brick wall most of the time in here. The answer from a lot of people is that EVERY player should stay at their original clubs and never move. Here is a question, why don't most of you still work in the first job you ever had??

Here is a question, why don't most of you still work in the first job you ever had?? Answer - because when the position ahead of me became vacant, the company overpaid for an under-qualified import despite me having better credentials and having put in a number of years in the organisation. Result - the years of investment the company had put into my development left with me when I went to a rival company, and the import left 12 months later because he 'got a better offer'.
