Well done to Baseball Victoria on its management of a difficult situation created by weather this weekend!
While BV gets its whack - often justifiably - for shortcomings in other areas, it showed solid, commonsense judgment in this instance by not canning the entire Summer League round as a knee-jerk early reaction to the armageddon predicted by some.
Grounds and weather conditions can vary massively across the league, so it is absolutely proper to allow until as late as practicable to determine if games should go ahead or not. While Sunday morning junior games clearly became not viable by late Saturday, some - perhaps many - Sunday senior fixtures may still go ahead should grounds be playable.
In the end we are there to play baseball, if that is at all viable given the conditions, safety and the need to consider the situation of teams needing to travel.
Whether or not any senior games are played, in the end, full marks to BV for getting this one right.

G'day pirates.
Aside from the direct junior notification (that seems to have been broadly received, and accepted), I was referring to the notice posted on the BV website late on Friday (see below). While "incumbent" weather is a strange application of the language, the message appears to be clear that case by case (IE ground by ground) decisions should be made in a timely manner on Sunday rather than blanket cancellation of the whole round. Seems to me that is absolutely sensible.
"While we're hoping for the best, we can't control the weather and with the forecasts looking ominous we wanted to provide the community with an update on the process for cancelling games if it should come to that.
Competition By-Laws state that: 24) Extreme Weather
If there is an adverse weather forecast (lightning, wet weather or extreme heat) for the scheduled playing day:
i) In advance, the Baseball Victoria Competition Manager may consider a full or partial cancellation (i.e. Competition Manager may choose to cancel some or all divisions) in advance and where applicable will seek necessary guidance from the Victorian Director of Umpiring, Bureau of Meteorology and/or selected medical and legal practitioners. Should this occur, all clubs will be notified via email and/or text message to Club Secretaries and via the competition website.
ii) On Game Day, if the Competition Manager has not made a decision in advance or advised for players to attend for play, decisions regarding play shall be in the hands of the home Club Secretary (or his/her nominee - as per Rule of Baseball 3.10 (a). iii) During a Game, once the game has commenced, decisions will then be made by the umpires.
We are reluctant to make blanket decisions that impact the entire state as the competing clubs of Baseball Victoria competitions are wide-spread geographically and so in accordance with the above mentioned rules, a decision on today’s (Friday 1 December) games (Juniors) has not yet been made by Baseball Victoria and will be left up to Club Secretaries until Game time.
In accordance with the above By Law if any club secretary decides on the day that your ground is unplayable please notify your opposition as early as possible as they will need time to advise their team members.
We hope that if the predicted weather does arrive, that all of the baseball community take the necessary precautions to keep themselves and families safe. We'll endeavour to keep everyone as up to date as possible and cross our fingers that baseball is not impacted too severely this weekend."

Under the circumstances, that is an absolutely fair call for La Trobe to make. Why would they, or should they compromise playing surfaces, which could lead to great expense and hassles down the track? There could be many other grounds in a similar position. Where that is the case, games should certainly not go ahead. However, there is some history here that has fortunately not been repeated - in this instance, anyhow. Hence my uncharacteristically kind comments about BV. I can recall occasions over many previous years when whole senior rounds or night fixtures on particular days have been cancelled in response to concern about possible inclement weather that has either not arrived at all or has affected just some areas. Summer League competition stretches across a large area, from Geelong and Ballarat across the entire Melbourne metropolitan area. Weather and ground conditions can fluctuate dramatically, making it very difficult for the governing body to apply any blanket judgment - one that can inevitably lead to BV being d**ned if it does, and d**ned if it doesn't. It is a tough call. This time BV got it about right.

Couldn't agree more KC. We managed to get our Womens game played at Sandy today and our 1's and 2's played legal games at Geelong also. While we would be a chance of playing juniors in the morning the way it's chucking it down I can understand BV's call. With rain easing tomorrow I think our 3's and 4's will play.
