Baseball in Victoria is at a stage, where it must utilise all channels of technology to grow the sport, through interest and participation, wherever and whenever people wish to do so. An automated scoring system for all Summer League Division 1 games, would enable the broader baseball community members (and others), to keep up with every game at every location, from anywhere in the world - much the same we do when the National Championships are on. A nominal fee of perhaps $20 per annum to utilise the service, would go towards costs/management, with a percentage to BV - I know of many from all baseball clubs who would sign up for such a service. The first of this season's games at Altona last night had very little on the BV website and nothing on their FB page. How are we to grow the sport if we cannot even communicate what is going on, on game day at our headquarters. If we are really serious about getting behind Jon and the Aces this year and start growing crowd numbers, we need to do the work at club level first to generate the interest......an automated scoring system is just the thing to push things along.

BTD, no-one would argue with your assertion that all available technology should be utilised to help provide timely and sensible coverage and promotion, though I have a sense that some or even many would have issue with your insistence that we should "do work at club level first".
Yes, clubs could and should look at ways in which their membership can deliver more, including automated scoring options - some of which are good, others not so good. However, not all clubs have the available personnel, or the time, or maybe not even the skills. Some clubs do outstanding communications work, while some clubs are "scuffling" (to use the term of one baseball lifer). With the great range of tasks required to run a successful, viable club, many volunteers are already "doing the work at club level".
Some people are paid to work in our baseball organisations. Not paid especially well, mind you, though we should expect them to do what is reasonably required or expected by their employer (the baseball community). While it is absolutely proper to expect that employees and volunteers should respect and assist each other in achieving mutual goals, the buck has to stop at organisational level. Not with often already stretched volunteers.
With the 24-hour online news cycle, there is increasingly more and more pressure being placed on media and communications employees everywhere. There is so much happening in Victorian baseball during summer that it will be difficult to keep everyone happy at all times.
However, having said that, governing bodies need to set the bar. They can do so in the first instance by ensuring that they focus on producing their own material whenever possible - not simply linking to other sources, which is too often what we are seeing at present. Leader Newspapers have been a great supporter of Victorian baseball for many years, but we should not expect them (or anyone other organisation) to be regularly filling a void. Community media should be coming to us for baseball news, not the other way around.
Automated scoring could be one way in which clubs can support grassroots baseball and the Aces while seeking to help grow crowd numbers, though there are other strategies - such as pumping up the ABL within clubs, offering package deals and family outings to games at Altona and pushing for games at other lit fields (Geelong, Preston and Ballarat).
A worthwhile discussion for sure, BTD. This season is absolutely vital to the future of the Aces and the ABL. There are plenty of creative people in the baseball community. Any workable ideas for generating interest in the ABL and the sport more generally should be explored.

The league refuse to discuss the idea of automated scoring! It seems that there excuse was what happens if the battery goes flat blah blah blah....I said it's better than not having a scorer at all! Crickets! But they feel we still need paper score books....wel you could get a print out at the end of the game I'm sure....Crickets. This is what we're dealing with
