As has been the case since demise of the Victorian Provincial Baseball League, the Winter Championship (or Carnival, as it was fondly known for decades) does not rate a mention in BV online communications until the last minute - or until it is time for a weekend away on the gravy train.
So what do we know about the Winter Championship 2016?
It will be played at Geelong Baseball Centre, yes.
The GBA will have a team. Dandenong will have at least one team. Dandenong Under 23? Melbourne Metro (or City) is rumoured to have put together a strong squad. North-East will again be with us, while Sunraysia, Bendigo and Latrobe Valley are regular starters who can be pretty much relied upon again.
Diamond Valley? Ringwood? Academy? Mount Gambier?

Have just wandered around the BV site and there is already a draw (below) that involves City teams in Geelong, Aces Academy, Dandenong, City and Ringwood. The Country Teams comprise Bendigo, Dandenong Under 23, Latrobe, NEBA, Sunraysia and Mount Gambier. My apologies for being uncharitable in the opening post, although I remain concerned that the Winter Carnival does not command the prominence, the attention and the coverage that it should warrant. Best wishes to all teams for another terrific series. www.baseballvictoria.com.au/Tournaments/2016-State-Winter-Champs/Seniors

Great to read your coverage KC.
Some very exciting games in the metro division with 3 of the games seeing lead changes in the last inning.
City - Geelong game was a cracker with geelong actually taking the lead in the last inning on the back of a hard hit ball by oliver box. The game was ultimately decided by the clock after the last play of the game could have won it for either side(10 minutes after the scheduled finish time the game stoped dead)
City boys wrapt to be 2-0, excellent outings from michael and gareth Formisano making the difference on day one.
looking forward to a couple of big games tomorrow.

Congratulation to City, a dominant Metro Group winner at the Senior Winter Championship played at Geelong Baseball Centre over the long weekend. City beat Geelong 12-0 in the final. Congratulations also to Dandenong Under 23, which snared the Country Group title 5-4 over Mount Gambier. Well done to all squads and all participating winter associations for their continuing support of this event. And a special thank you to the local clubs, the GBA, to officials and to the very many volunteers who assisted in the delivery of another terrific event. Grounds, facilities and catering, as always, were first class.www.geelongassociation.baseball.com.au/index.cfm?fuseaction=Display_Page&PageID=13298&OrgID=19464

How disappointing can it be that a State Championship coverage by the so called governing body gets just lip service, just the scores and incorrect ladders, no stats no nothing. Give it to people who care about such tournaments, well done to the GBA and Clubs and the competing Associations for another fantastic effort in supplying good coverage and facilities. BV should hang their heads in shame for the lack of effort put in by them in the organization of such tournaments but are willing to accept kudos for a successful tournament. Shame, Shame, Shame. Congratulations to the CITY and DBA U/23 sides for the winning ways. Bring on next year.

Shame Diamond Valley couldn't get their act together. Noting the handful of Watsonia guys in the City squad surely we can find three seniors each from Research, Greensborough, GMBC, even Bundoora, Diamond Creek, Panton Hill whatever to get a team together. Years ago DV played off in the GF with a team made up of seconds and thirds players and a good coach. Surely there is a Camov amongst the DV that can make a few calls early in the season to rustle up some troops...

It has now been a week since the SWC was held in Geelong and being a person in stats, I note that there is still no stats to be found. Maybe it is too hard to publish the stats even though all the paperwork is handed in after the game. For my liking, it must be a nuisance for BV to dedicate time to this fine carnival. Maybe it is time to reinstate the old VPBL and get people who care back running the show instead of the mightily understaff and under knowledge BV staff trying to seem interested in this institutionalised weekend of Baseball. Someone said to me that it was all on twitter, if that is the best they can do by supplying someone to type a few titbits we are in a world of strife. If you don't have twitter, or in some cases facebook, information could be very limiting. I have now had my Sunday rant and will investigate what twitter is. LOL.

Hey Boof You will find that there are no Stats anymore. The only stat related information is the 3-2-1 votes that the opposition coaches give for each team on the weekend. No Pitching or Batting stats are recorded anymore Buddha

Well Buddha
That is pretty bl##dy poor effort and just gives creedance to the lip service BV gives this tournament. Obviously stats are more important in the Summer Div 1 & 2 over a longer period rather than a weekend effort. I still say, Shame, Shame Shame.

I agree doubleplay. Checking the Champ' site I found various functions to click on for info and stat's were one of them. Why have that if it doesn't contain stat's? Likewise the photo gallery. No photographs? At all? If a journalist or a punter looked at that it would just look slack and that BV just don't care by not providing for those fields. It also sends a signal to the volunteers, host club, players and umpires that this competition doesn't rate.

It's not seniors but looking at the BV website but apparently we have the Dandenong Angels playing the Ringwood baseball club, Geelong Baycats Baseball Club and a bunch of Juniors from Sunraysia. It seems that this weekends U/18 Winter Championships is a Club event and not an Association v Association Event. That just goes to show how much effort BV puts into these Championships. Once again, SHAME, SHAME, SHAME. Bring back the VPBL and give it to people who care.

Have i missed something is it a split round in the under 18s winter champs. 4 teams, whats going on, is that right. Once a hilghlit it seems the junior program is slipping away accross the state along with clubs struggling to fill junior criteria.

Maybe Pirate, it could be the location it is being held at for the last several years might just be a bit of a long haul for some Associations. The last time I travelled to Mildura, there was Geelong, DBA, D/Valley, Ringwood, Sunraysia and I think one other team and that was 4 years ago. Maybe time to bring it closer to Melbourne.
