Spearheaded by a terrific game from Josh Lee, East Belmont Saints posted its first win of the Geelong Baseball Association A Grade season – an 8-4 result over Bellarine - while Werribee held off a fast-finishing Lara Wildcats 7-4 and Deakin christened its magnificent new field (below) in the most fitting manner with a 4-1 win over Guild Lions, who have slipped to third. Mounties had the A Grade bye. www.geelongassociation.baseball.com.au/

Heathmont walked of winners against Essendon 4 to 3. Ben Leslie knocked in Nick Rossell for the game winner. Daniel Mack was the standout hitter of the game with a couple of hits including a home run. Matty Wilson (Heathmont) and Daniel Chircop (Essendon) both pitched great and went deep into the game.

It gives me an interest and keeps me interested in Victorian baseball on a broader scale and reminds me of the larger family that exists away from my usual City-centric bias. Geelong winter comp' is a regular contributor and I'd guess that your sponsors, players, volunteers, councils, would appreciate your efforts to promote your league. An interest that is easily forgotten if not seen from time to time, if not regularly. Please keep us tragics posted. Thanx for the effort. perfeckt.

Indeed, perfeckto. NEBA is something of a diamond in the rough, a league that often goes unheralded by others despite its long-term commitment to winter carnivals and more recently to Masters baseball. And how about this terrific blog by one of its clubs? talesoflinedrive.wordpress.com/

Meanwhile.........Winter baseball-Week 7.
Nearing the 1/2 way mark of the MWBL season there are some ominous signs appearing. Ladder leaders Heathmont, are yet to lose a game whilst cellar dwellers Knox are yet to win one.
Summer legend club Essendon has had a so-so start to the season with only 3 wins so far, 2 of those on home soil and sit 3 and a1/2 games adrift of the Penguins who sit on top after 7 games.
Forest Hill are faring a little better than Knox with 2 wins up their sleeve but the stat's tell a tale of difference only by degrees. The 'Hill Boys' have 9 runs more than Knox but they are nearly equal in runs against. However, there is still 4 points of separation.
Defending league champions Research are having a premiership hangover but only 2 and a 1/2 games away from the top rung. So far they have been beaten by Nth. Balwyn by one run and then Heathmont in their opening 2 rounds of the season and then by Essendon in round 4 also but by only one run.
The top 4 are within just two wins of each other. Watsonia, Nth. Balwyn and Ringwood snapping at the Heathmont heels and Research only 1/2 a game off the pace. Keep in mind that the only tied game of winter so far was between Heatmont and Research in the opening stanza.
Essendon and Greensborugh are another game behind that pack with 7th. placed Greensborugh boasting 54 runs batted in compared to Essendon's 31 but on paper the Don's have nearly 1/2 the runs scored against and that keeps them ahead on percentage in 6th.
Mental note : Percentage doesn't count when there is a win/loss account in your favour.
So Heathmont are looking the goods so far. 4th in the amount of runs scored at 52 and tied with 2 other clubs with runs scored against at 27 with all 3 following Nth. Balwyn at 26 against. More importantly Heathmont have the points, the confidence and momentum.
Round 8 should and I mean should see Heathmont and Research comfortable winners over Forest Hill and Knox respectively. The battle between Essendon and GMBC will be up for grabs with Essendon having the better pitching but GMBC having more hitting power...so far. Essendon for the win. Nth. Balwyn are at a distinct batting disadvantage against Greensborough, particularly at home but they have a definite advantage in the pitching stakes. I'll pick Nth. Balwyn. Ringwood v. Watsonia will be the game of the round for me and although the money-ball stat's might point to a different result, I'm tipping an upset for a Ringwood win......but not by much.....walk-off maybe?!?!?

What will be interesting to watch is whether the MWBL admin enforce the junior policy for A Grade and A-Reserve Finals If the rumour-mill is true, Greensborough, Watsonia and GMBC apparently fail to meet the MWBL junior criteria and their respective A/A-Res teams will not play finals if they finish top 4. Can anyone confirm?

In the DBA this last weekend in A Grade, The Dandy Angels defeated Pakenham Pumas 15 to 5. The Frankston Tomatoes bounced back with a hard fought win over the Berwick Dodgers 4 to 3. Mornington Pirates caused the upset of the round with a 4 to 1 victory over Dingley. Cheltenham Rustlers had the Bye. In B Grade the Cheltenham Rustlers defeated Chelsea Dolphins 11 to 9. The Dandenong Angels had a fine duel with Bonbeach St Chads winning 5 to 1 and Boneo Braves out hit the Frankston Tomatoes 15 to 7. Dingley had the bye.

I don't have anything on this subject but it is a concerning trend where Baseball Admin are happy to try and stop people from playing baseball, put up road blocks for individuals and teams to play. Not sure as a sport we are in such a terrific position where we can be doing that but there will always be people who disagree on this subject

Good point Larry. Surely the "baseball admin" should be assisting clubs (and the game) grow the junior ranks.... Bit harsh to just say "you don't have juniors - you don't plant finals" without actually trying to actively help in getting those junior players/numbers up. That's what I think anyway.....

When are people going to get it, it is a Winter Competition and should be treated as such. Yes enforce the playing conditions of the day but to prevent sides playing finals is just plain ludicrous. Promote the sport not to hinder it should be the mantra.

I think you'll find that GB, GMBC and Wats have either actually got the numbers or applied for consideration. This is not the point of course, and I agree the investment in building junior numbers is more the point. The clubs need to influence RDJBA and DVJBA, who need to influence the MWBL who need to influence BV who need to influence BA.
Get involved people!
Larry it is an interesting one isn't it. Whilst you and I probably know a lot about the situation, we aren't privy to everything and an appeal may be in situ for what it's worth. League has hit them pretty hard to make a point of respecting the laws regardless of the reasoning on the day. Harsh lesson.

I heard a whisper that it is not what happened on the day but the altering of the match card after it was signed off that has caused the penalty. Harsh lesson? Imagine if you tried that on a bank cheque??

What's the difference with stopping teams playing finals and not allowing teams to he promoted? Personally it's crap that they hit these teams with a penalty during the season, but allowed them to start the season without the criteria....oh wait...these are a grade teams! Wait that doesn't happen! Maybe this will change some peoples opinions about how hard it is to get juniors up, and that maybe that shouldn't affect your seniors! Because if teams like gmbc are under the pump then any team can be!

Wyatt GMBC and Watsonia are 'above the line' re junior qualifying criteria but I don't believe Greensborough are. They can and may have already for an exception and I hope they are OK as they are a great club with a wonderful history and proud people like most local sporting clubs. I understand Junior numbers aren't officially counted until the league receives registrations and a match card or two with that person is received and married up to the rego. This usually takes a few weeks and junior drift in early in the season.
Baseless that is the core of the problem, but it's not that simple and a lot of machinations are involved in both sides of the charge and the discussion and the tribunal/board/committee or who ever makes the decision. Bit of overkill IMHO but I wasn't privy to the internal discussions or tribunal (I'm not a part of NBBC). If you have the time and the inclination, grab a beer and ask someone involved at North Balwyn, and if they like you you might get the long version.
Foul made, no blood, move on, play ball,

Imagine if you tried that on a bank cheque?? It's not a bank cheque. You could compare it to a million things that it isn't just to try to make a point. This wasn't some sort of fraud and from what I understand, the violation had no actual impact on the game. It would be more like writing a bad cheque and then burning it before anyone saw it. That would be a closer comparison. If a match card was altered, it sounds like Phil put his initials next to the corrections as not to try and hide the fact. Sort of like "Look, I've done this. Please decide if it's ok." What would they have done if it was seen that he was trying to hide it? Geez, if he got 5 weeks for what he did I imagine it would be firing squad for trying to be sneaky. As far as the president getting the penalty as well. Pfft.... Never should have happened. This feels personal to me. Both my clubs summer and winter have gotten fines and suspensions over the years. That's life, decisions are made. Usually I go "meh" nuts happens but this was something dished out like some "F U" to the club president.

My point is that if they go into the season with out the criteria, it's really not fair to punish them half way thru. If they don't have the criteria at the start, they shouldn't be in a grade. It's good enough for the other clubs battling to get into a grade. Same as gmbc and Watsonia! If you haven't got the numbers at the beginning of the season, sorry your gone! It happens in summer, why the difference? Oh the tail wags the dog....

Being in Canberra, I'm out of the loop with the North Balwyn drama. Can anyone fill us in on what happened and who was involved? By suspending the Pres plus one, the issue was obviously seen as serious by someone.

Being in Canberra, I'm out of the loop with the North Balwyn drama. Can anyone fill us in on what happened and who was involved? By suspending the Pres plus one, the issue was obviously seen as serious by someone. I'm also yet to hear any official versions of either the incident or the penalties imposed. I'm under the impression it was alleged that more players than officially allowed actually took to the field (I believe in Div 1 a max of 15 players can take to the field). Scuttlebutt says the match report sheet may have been altered sometime after it was signed off by both coaches and the umpires and prior it being forwarded to MWBL Admin. In Winter it is the clubs and not the umpires who must forward the match report sheet to the MWBL Admin. Which I find totally bewildering. As I said, I'm just guessing here and would be happy for someone to correct me.

Wyatt my point is that MWBL have to balance what they are told are numbers by clubs at the start of the season, what is registered on the wonderful IMG system, and what appears on a couple of match cards before they can then tick the box of criteria met or not. They then issue a note if a club has not met the criteria. There are quite a few combined teams in the DV this season so David wasn't clearly told which kids were at which clubs, and Rookie Ball/Tee ball numbers weren;t in when letters issued. All sorted now.
Greensborough is another story and I'm not saying should get consideration because they are good blokes and a good club, I just think there are a heap of good blokes at a good club and I wish them all the best.
The discussion is about eligibility to play A and A Reserve finals, not to play A Grade. Hit the criteria a few games in is OK - many clubs have numbers that alter over the first five or six weeks which is why David has headaches and sends out new fixtures early in the season.
Goblin/Russell - ask North Balwyn for their official version or ask MWBL for their official version and you may have two different conversations. Only 15 players took to the field but there was 16 originally noted on the sheet. It then gets 'blurry' re what NBBC did and this is where the ambiguity of blending common sense and officialdom kicks in and I leave it to you to ask people. NBBC weren't trying to win a game by deceit - they were up 8-2 or the like with an innings left and made a heap of changes to give some kids an A Grade run.
Whatever happened, lessons learnt by all re the sanctimonious respect needed to be applied to handling match cards.

What I'm saying muz is that if they've given them the go ahead at seasons start, then they can't punish them mid season. The punishment comes the next season when they get relegated because they fail the criteria. Same as first and second divs in summer. Can't move goal posts once the season has started.

I see what you mean Damo after checking the regulations.
- A minimum of THREE junior teams, competing within the winter season are required per club for the club to be able to participate in the A Grade and A Reserves final series games as well as for consideration for promotion/relegation to the A Grade competition.
There has been a paper/email forwarded by Michael Deeble around this criteria being reconsidered for next season. I understand the MWBL have received this and it will be discussed at the appropriate board/pennant/exec level. It is hard to confirm junior numbers say two weeks out from the start of the senior season when the fixtures and senior team confirmations need to be submitted to the league. I'm sure Ricey would have loved an email from Monty, Watsonia or Greensborough a day or two before the season saying 'sorry, we thought we had three junior teams but it is now 2.5 so can you put us in B Grade please' ;-)
