best hitter I have ever seen bar none, and I mean none was Darren Smith. Im talkin even better than the myles 'bumpy' barnden (sorry bumpster, but I have to tell it how i see it)and adam burton. he would have been the best hitter in the whole ABL when it was goin but he told them to jam it as he had work comittments. the guy would hit at least .450 every season with about 15 yahtzees.... when those redline Z cores were still in effect he could hit the ball out of site and I mean you couldnt see the ball anymore it went that far. I think I have pi$$ed in this guys pocket enough but here is one more for ya. I remember a day at bonbeach and benny donald was throwin (a quality pitcher in his own right when fit) and he bounced a curveball at about 50 feet, smitty got down onto one knee and played a sweep shot, it went about 500 feet. that my friends is what I call clutch...

Clutch... you'd have to go with Bumpy. Hasn't been since much since the Lions have been in div 3 but in his day, as good as any.

Agree with Darren Smith, he could hit a wet pair of socks 400ft. Luckily never had to throw at the generation before that.

Darren Snelson by far, anyone who has ever played with or against him should agree.
Still just as good as he was 20 years ago.

best I have ever played with. Like I said, he can still swing it nowadays too. Longevity isn't as common in baseball as we would like to imagine.

I find it difficult to rate a hitter swinging a tin bat... pointless almost.

discussing guys from yesteryear who havent played in the last 6 or 7 years - all would have swung a tin bat.

pretty sure Snelson still tears it up in your league and he is 20 years your senior.

discussing guys from yesteryear who havent played in the last 6 or 7 years - all would have swung a tin bat. It is always difficult discussing athletes from different eras but thats what makes it fun. Ali v Tyson Chamberlin V Jordan Palmer V Woods Pele V Ronaldo and so on and so on. I think the best athletes of their time would do well in any other time. And Snelson still plays for Watsonia.

Snelson freak and cant practice alot and has a family to look after which makes it even better. I bet you would love to take yourself DEEP chins. How would hardy be able to pitch to chins with chins hanging off his nuts. I will let you guys think about that one for a moment.

Saw a lot of Darren Smith too Wombat. If he pumped up is own tyres as much as some on here he would have played 5-10 years of national league. He could flat out crush it. He could fight good too.

Chinmusic......message to you my conceited little urchin If you had pitched to some of the hitters you dismiss as not worthy of consideration on this thread due to the era they played in and the construction of the bats they used. Well you my stupid, arrogant, ill informed young man, whoever you are, would have been well advised to pitch in full catchers gear...and behind an L screen. SELF PRAISE IS NO RECOMMENDATION. Please stop patting yourself on the back before you dislocate something.

Ill informed? Young man? How is it ill informed when you consider a guy like Gary White from Sydney who won countless batting titles in the ABL swinging a tin bat only to go 0 fer for 3 Claxton Shields in a row when swinging wood. Sure, some of the guys mentioned are great hitters - I pitched against guys like Myles Barden, Gary White and Adam Burton in the ABL days, they could all swing it, not denying that at all but swinging timber is a completely different ball game. So whoever you are Lucadello - personally I don't care when you start calling people stupid and ill informed. PS - I didnt wear catchers gear either

Ah, luca......you, like me, must be of the vintage when we used wood bats (until early seventies, but we still used to smack the ball OK), then went to aluminium for those halcyon years and have now seen the wheel turn back to the hickory.
There have been great hitters in all eras, under all conditions, and with whatever weapons at their disposal. I don't know if Chins is conceited or not, but he may well be misguided. There have been many fearsome hitters who would have done the job equally well with wood or aluminium, in all eras.

Hey Luca,
I love you mate and I think you are in the best two hitting coaches I have ever been lucky enough to receive instructions from. (along with the Duck) and I have no doubt that you would still be racking up the hits on and off the field if you were in your mid 20s....
And someone needs to give Chins a heads up on your identity before he gets himself hurt

I have no issues with comparing guys from different era's but you cannot compare a wooden bat to a tin bat - period.
I am also trying to understand how someone gets 'hurt' by giving their opinion on a forum - if the only thing you guys have to say back to me about my opinion is by calling me names while you hide behind your nicknames - then you are all sad little individuals.
Feel free to continue you calling me names, if thats the best you have. I'll use it on the field...
Barb - I suggest you check your PM's.

Come on Chins/Chardy, lighten up. You are entitled to your opinion, regardless off how inane, childish and totally ill informed it is!
Take note of what the others are saying. It is difficult to compare guys from different eras, but doing so makes for great discussions. To totally dismiss a whole era because they didn't hit with wood is just ludicrous. Listen to Luca and Duke, the great hitters would have been able to hit with anything in their hands.
And in regards to Gary White, it may have been the fact he is about 45 that stopped him from hitting, not actually using wood. I'm sure when he played pro baseball he hit with wood. You need to show some respect to the history and what others have achieved. It will do you good.
And to you Luca, you need to start listening to Chins/Chardy because he PLAYED IN THE ABL.................

All I am saying is that you cannot compare someone stats when they are swinging a 34 inch 29 ounce aluminium bat with a 2 and 3/4 barrell - twice the area of hitting space as a wooden bat. I'm sure all of these guys could swing wood as good as tin but tin will turn a .300 hitter into a .400 ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. I'm suprised you can even spell ABL.
