After the midweek Round 6 games the Summer League ladder has a new look.
No longer the split conference ladders but a single cross board ladder and it reads like this.
1.Melbourne.----------------------------- 7.Cheltenham.
2. Essendon.------------------------------ 8.Preston.
3.Geelong.----------------------------- 9.Sandringham.
4.Blackburn.----------------------------- 10.Newport.
5.Waverly.----------------------------- 11.Springvale.
6.Sunshine.----------------------------- 12.Doncaster.
Round 7 will see 7th. placed CHELTENHAM host ESSENDON who are holding 2nd spot with a 5-1 win/loss record, the loss coming at the hands of the 3rd. placed Geelong in Round 4.
ESSENDON this weekend will be once again without the services of Gareth Formisano and Josh Davies who are in Adelaide with the Melbourne Aces.
Formisano is credited with 4 games but is yet to throw a ball in anger. Davies is batting .300 for the Dons but has only played two games this season and on closer inspection it shows that only five members of the squad have played all six games so far this season.
Of those five, Michael Formisano has an ERA of 2.25, Daniel Fornito has a BA of .222 and catcher Tristan McDonald a miserly .08, that's BA not ERA.
Only two 6 gamers posting .300+ numbers, 'Brothers McIntyre'. Dean-.346 and Scott-.353.
Formisano 'M' could be joined on the mound by 5 gamer Luke Abels, ERA .278.
CHELTENHAM have an ok record against the Don's in recent years so the task ahead wouldn't seem insurmountable.
But.
The experience of the .368 hitting Paul Rutgers, who is also on Aces duties, will be sorely missed.
Young gun catcher Mitch Holding is also on the road with the Aces but as are a few of the Rustlers, yet to fire in the batting department during the VSBL's early rounds.
Even with another young gun by the name of George Carlil showing the way with a BA of .412 and an on base average of 44% it will be a big ask for Chelt' to take this one but don't discount their bats waking up and their hurlers dulling Essendons attack.

6th. sitting PRESTON travel cross town for a cross conference match up with 4th. placed BLACKBURN.
PRESTON have two pitchers with healthy ERA's by way of Hayden Godbold at .198 after 4 games played and adopted favourite son Edward "Buzzy" Buzechero at 2.02 after 5 appearances.
Backing them up is 6 game pitcher Jordan Ley with an ERA of 4.5.
On the batting side of things Ley is topping the squad average coming into the weekend with a BA of .348 but only two other players come close to that with BA's of .286 in the forms of Leigh Bertrand and Ben Jackson but then it falls away.
BLACKBURN are another squad going into Round 7 without one of their top players due to a call up by the Melbourne Aces, Nick Rossell who is batting .429 after 6 games, 7 RBI's and an on base percentage of 54% which could be seen as a big loss from the Blackburn squad.
Not so, at least on the hitting side of things.
Another two 6 gamers are also in form with BA's of .421 and .471, Steve Bookluck and David Dicker.. After them?
Barron, Berg, Evans, Hunter, Mack and Rogers are all holding .316+ BA's, with all but one playing in all 6 games so far.
The pitching department doesn't seem as rosey for the Orioles.
ERA's of 9, 6.93, 7.27 and 8.11 leave room for improvement from the Blackburn mound and vulnerable to strong batting sides but even if you took away 20 of their runs from the 'stranger than fiction' game in round 3 against Springvale they would remain one of the two "strongest batting sides" in the League.
Preston have the 'Buzz' factor but I don't think it will be enough.
