VSBL Snr. Mens.
Interesting game coming up this weekend and it could be a cracker when the Blackburn Orioles flock on down to 'The Farm' to take on Cheltenham Rustlers 1st's side for the first time this season.
Both teams are sitting on a 2-2 win-loss account so far and are sitting 3rd. and 4th respectively on their conference ladder.
Interestingly Blackburn are up one place, partly due to what can only be described as a bizarro game in Round 3 when they defeated Springvale 23-21 in an error filled outing, thus netting both a heap of runs for but also a heap of runs against.
Cheltenham played Springvale in Round 2 and came away with a 5-0 win.
The Rustlers' other win so far this season came in last weeks Round 4 when they hosted Doncaster. Cheltenham kept the Dragons scoreless whilst plating 5.
The Orioles' other win so far this season came in their season opener at the Dragons Lair. Blackburn kept the
Dragons scoreless whilst plating 14.
Blackburns two losses have been delivered by Melbourne in Round 2 (3-5) and in Round 4 at the hands of Waverly (5-6).
Chelt' also went down to the Wildcats (4-2) in Round 3 and like the Orioles, incurred their other loss
to the Melbourne Demons (3-0) in their season opener.
Obviously it's a season still settling and barely cutting its baby teeth but who would be the favourites come game day?
Despite the Orioles blip on the radar when they had a 2 run win over the so far winless Springvale Lions, which I might add could possibly hint at a pitching deficiency, Blackburns batting stat's are impressive.
Bookluck, Rossell and Tierney are hitting well into the .400's with the likes of Barron, Berg, Dicker, Evans, Hunter, Mack and Rogers posting .300+ numbers. There the kind of numbers that are hard to ignore.
The pitching numbers are also hard to ignore.
The Rustlers have years of homegrown youth development on their side highlighted by a still developing star in George Callil
who has a .427 BA already this season.
They also field a strong and experienced list of players. The ever dangerous Paul Rutgers for one a clutch player and known game changer. New playing Manager of the 1st's squad for season 15/16 Adam Blackley. Blackly brings a wealth of experience to the Rustlers and it wouldn't surprise me to see him take the mound for a stint. Expect to see Kable Hogben on the mound along with import Brian Kloppe who possesses a wicked submarine pitch and a season ERA of 1.23.
And just to throw some added interest into the game.
In 2015 Daniel Mack, Nick Rossell and Matt Taylor will be returning to Cheltenham but this time as ex Rustlers that sees all three wearing the Orioles strip for an away game and the first away game at the Farm for Rossell since he was a 5 year old.
Depending on availability both teams have a shot and it wouldn't surprise me if it went to extra innings, then again it wouldn't surprise me if it was a draw or a blow out. So far the results of these two teams point toward an even match. Winning hiccup aside.
Good luck to both teams and remember "Every game counts"
My guess is Orioles by 3 for an away win and it will be a cracker to watch.
