The amount of Umpires in Victoria is at (I suspect) an all-time low, this view was shared to me by a senior umpire earlier in the season. 4 games this year we (Heathmont) have only had 1 umpire. There could be a range of reasons for this but I suggest us as players and supporters are the number one reason why numbers are so low. We as a collective need to do a better job in our treatment of umpires and provide them with the respect the position deserves. Players and coaches need to lead the way and even here on the forum we could contribute by eliminating the anonymous posts attacking umpires which has been common place. This doesn’t mean you can’t question a call or decision in a game, just do so in a respectful, professional manner. It is incumbent on us to address this situation immediately and in the interests of the game we love.

Come on John. You have been around the game a long time and while I tend to agree with some of your comments, I cannot and will not totally agree. There are some ( and its only a handful )that are there for themselves. They show no respect to the player, no respect to the coaches and therefor IMHO, they have no respect for the game.I am walking away from the game after 40 + years not because of this, but it has a something to do with my decision. I am sick and tired of being told how to conduct my self from certain people who have no respect for the game. Think they no better than everyone else yet continue to get fundamental decisions wrong and then get angry at you when they are questioned. Bring back the BB, the NA of this world and let them show todays umpires how they got the respect. I can guarantee you it wasn't from shouting and talking down to players..

We just have to try something to help get the umpire numbers to swell up, and maybe us all being a bit more civil might help.
The standard of umpiring probably has dropped in the past 10-15 years (but so has the playing level) and thats simply a result of the numbers. Less people umpiring means naturally less good umpires.

I have in the past and will probably in the future discuss umpires, but it is a two way street with RESPECT being the main highway. I have seen a lot of good umpires and I have seen some who should have taken up a different vocation, but as a whole, the umpiring fraternity have just about got it right, the only lesson that needs to be taught to the overbearing minority is how to handle players and that comes back to respect. There is probably only about three or four who really do lack respect for the players and firmly believe that the game revolves around them. Just a few thoughts, maybe the pay isn't sufficent to convince ex players to take up umpiring, and two, maybe the travel factor could be a reason. Just an example, in cricket you will find upto 80-85% of the umpires are ex players.

Maybe we just scrap that "Players Insurance" we have to pay, and add that to umpires payments (as an incentive to convince more to do it)...

It'll be interesting to see the attendance numbers at the 2 seminars this coming week.

Impressed with the two younger umpires I've seen this winter. One of them I know to be the son of a current ABL umpire and I don't know who the other one is but I'm impressed.

Great to see a U.S minor league umpire in the Melbourne rotation. Quality umpire to.
