Wednesday, November 7, 2012 – St Kilda Baseball Club (est. 1879), Australia's oldest baseball club, is pleased to announce the opening of the Saints Taco Kitchen. Operating for Saturday home games all summer, the Saints Taco Kitchen will offer slow cooked pulled pork and beef soft tacos in addition to rice and black beans (for vegetarians) across Saturday and Sunday afternoon home stands commencing this Saturday November 10.
After a successful Oktoberfest Festival day that included a Bratwurst sausage barbecue and imported German beers to celebrate the first Saturday home stand against Mulgrave, STKBC turns to its love of Mexican cuisine for the much anticipated local derby with rival Port Melbourne.
Situated in the glorious surrounds of Albert Park replete with cityscape backdrop and boat regattas on the nearby Albert Park Lake, STKBC offers the perfect environs to take in local baseball and relax on a summer afternoon.
Seven team strong, St Kilda is proud to have members from all parts of the globe and prides itself on being a diverse, cosmopolitan club attuned to the local community. Long considered one of Melbourne's best kept secrets for local residents, baseball fans and tourists looking for great food and sports action, St Kilda Baseball Club welcomes new members and anyone looking for delicious lunch alternative on weekends over summer.
“Mexican food is delicious and enjoying a boom around Melbourne at the moment. We're lucky enough to have several members from the United States who have brought their knowledge and passion of Mexican cuisine to hopefully make the Saints Taco Kitchen a word-of-mouth destination in the area,” said club secretary Sea Ansley. “There'll be music, exciting baseball and as usual a great warm atmosphere
Details Where: St Kilda Baseball Club, Tom O'Halloran Field, Hockey Drive, Albert Park When: Saturday, November 10 Time 1pm onwards

Well i can tell you the boys are looking forward to this. They are also looking forward to a couple of ICE COLD CARLTON DRAUGHTS as they both go hand in hand. This would go along way to washing away the memory of my last visit to albert park where neither food nor COLD froffies were on offer until very late afternoon...................................................................................

Down at Albert Park watching the Mariners take on the Saints, great to see things don't change much down here, at 1.50pm I asked for a Hotdog and they hadn't even plugged the hotdog cooker into the powerpoint they had apparently been sitting in cold water for an hour, for the players sake I hope the beers are cold after the game.

Don't argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. Well done to those involved in putting on the best food I've had at baseball in 20+ years, marginally knocking off Ringwood's roast beef and gravy rolls. Club made over 1,500 bucks today, outstanding result.

To Strawberry... I am sorry we didn't live up to your expectations...
As per the flyer and discussion we had with your club our focus was on running a taco kitchen today. I was personally in charge of the canteen and not afraid to admit it. As you stated the hot dogs were not started when you requested as they were not the priority today. I can assure you this: 1. These hot dogs were only started mere minutes before you came in and yes were not actually started cooking. this was because it tripped fuse and once you ordered we advised it would be 5-10 minutes till ready... 2. These were not sitting in water for any length of time as we steam our dogs.
As for cold beers and tacos... I will let everyone else judge for themselves our beers are sufficiently cold and as for tacos I am pretty sure you didn't have one as I didn't serve you one, but if someone did get one with a hair I am sorry and this does happen even in the best restaurants, we will continue to try to do our best.
As for no Killer Pythons... Sorry again we cannot cater for everything as we are a small market canteen, not a Coles
Lastly I hope all other clubs come down and experience this spread for themselves as this is a very short sighted post hoping to torpedo our intentions for offering a nutritious alternative within our canteen. I can assure you that people were coming back for seconds and even more and the feedback received face to face multiple people from this same club asking for my recipes you WONT be disappointed
Cheers!

To StK49, The post about your Taco's was made by another member of my club who got hold of my phone & made the post under my name (i apologies & have now deleted it), I make no apologies about my post re Hot Dogs, I don't eat Taco's and didnt get the flyer saying Hot Dogs would not be freely available, but from comments heard throughout the day from others apparently the Taco's were pretty good (a shame I don't eat them) I commend your Club on trying something new in a canteen that historically not been the best in baseball, also some of the boys had a few cold beers, so things are on the improve in the Saints canteen, good luck with rest of the season.

stk49,
I can't support your comments about this poor attempt at a canteen. I couldn't get a coffee unless it was microwaved, the very short hotdogs were actually saveloys (not hot dogs) and they had the audacity to charge $3.50 for those small snacks. Haven't they heard of 8 " hotdogs and decent sized hot dog rolls. Dim Sims were nowhere to be found. Unfortuantely I like to eat what I like to eat. I take umberance at being told what I have to eat. Yes I like Tacos, but (a) not when I go to the baseball and (b) not at $6 each for such a small feed. Absolutely nothing wrong with a decent hotdog or dim sims. It's not always about making decent money if you want visitors to come back for more. I've only been to St Kilda twice and both times I have been disappointed by a lack of choice or no food being available at different times.

As mentioned we cannot cater for everyone, but we actually sold 90+ tacos on Saturday, so we are doing something right. As for $6 for a taco and side of handmade tortilla chips being overpriced (We also offered 2 for $11 and even cheaper if you bought more) I challenge you to find a taco cheaper of the caliber we are producing. This is not Old ElPaso with mince meat and canned sauces... Giving people a choice of something fresh and healthy as opposed to a cheap reheated processed food is our goal. If people want something else there is plenty of places nearby due to our location.
I do not wish to make this a negative post or attack any club even if flares are thrown at us, but I can assure you our canteen on Saturday was holding its own against what I experienced on Sunday.

Must have some big eaters, because I heard there was bugger all supporters at the game! Somebody must have set some sort of taco eating record! As for the stkilda canteen, they have been a bit of a laughing stock for a few years. At a grand final last year, they weren't even open till after the game had started, and they nothing to eat. Facts are facts. It's probably the only place I take food, because we know there's no chance of a feed. No disrespect to the stkilda blokes, and the bar is fine, but not the canteen.

Well Wyatt what you must have heard was incorrect... There was a constant flow of people throughout the day, not everyone stays the whole day. We are a club built on a very transient player base with very few families, past players and then the players friends coming from within the club, so we will never have a huge supporting base like some other clubs unfortunately.
Since I was helping serving all day I can tell you there was no single taco eating champion. Your completely right about last year and years past, but those are facts of the past... We have hired someone to run the canteen this year in attempt to improve our offering and there will be small steps before we are running at efficiency of better clubs, but we will get there. I am not sure the side you play on within your club and when your next visit to Albert Park is, but I hope on your next return we lift our game from previous experiences. We are working hard to change things, but as you can appreciate these things do not happen overnight.

Puma I will personally ensure they are there... Feel free to tell the whole club to come down. If the response is good let me know. As the meats are slow cooked for 8 hours, so could use a heads up if so I can make a truckload.

I find this thread and interesting insight into the Forum more broadly at times.
StKilda are trying to do something good, and using the Forum to advise us all, and for some reason blokes want to dredge up the past ?
Sure some clubs dont/didnt provide the service that others do but geeez guys this is a great initiative so get over the past and who gives a stuff if they sold 60 or 90 on the weekend and be thankful for what the club is trying to do for those of us that visit in the future.
Hey BV can we get StKilda filling the Bye in Div4 Nth/West so I can get me some Tacos ?

Maybe Port Melbourne should worry less about the quality of the product in the canteen and more about the quality of the product on the field. 14 Ks for your 2s on Saturday. Less time with hotdogs and dim sims, and more time in the cage would be my suggestion. I was wondering how long it would take before a retort like this. You guys realize that you share a junior program right?

Then again, my past experiences at St Kilda aren't all that pleasant. Limited parking near the ground, no food at all and tepid beer. Doesn't make for fond memories, once you can get away with, but four times. Please lift your standards and atleast have cold bloody beer, I'm not to fussed about the food, but the beer must be cold.

Thanks for the kind words Authentic... We are trying
Agreed Larry and totally not what I was hoping would happen, but knew someone couldn't help themselves... Sorry for the lack of professionalism. I had post taken down...
Oldman River... We are now stocking the fridge on Thursday night, instead of someone getting to the ground and shopping on the game day, so beers should be nice and cold from now on and like you said much more important, food is a compliment to cold beer!!! Unfortunately nothing we can do about parking...

Big fella - 14 punch outs is a good day for the Mariner 2's in comparison with last year! Great to see things on the turn around from the last couple of years with the Dandy-Mariners. I told my 10 year old of the Taco Kitchen and he's now chomping at the bit for me to take him from Waverley to St.Kilda to 'get him some taco's'. Great initiative, great place for baseball. And i've never had a warm Sol down there.

49er, You are right about the parking, but I am glad you have the frothies under control. Best of luck with your Taco days, If I am passing through I will be happy to sample the chef's work along with a nice cold frothy if I can get a car park.

Totally agree Dazza.I can remember cricket games where the toilet was behind a tree and volunteers brought the "afternoon tea" As for cold beers..not unless you liked them with ice cubes! I know we have advanced from the last century, but canteen operatives and scorers have the two worst jobs in baseball, and I for one am loath to bag either group unless I was prepared to get in and do better. I hate Tacho's..but who cares?..I go to the baseball for the game and anything else is a bonus.

dazza33, I have had my day in the sun as a player and remember those days with fond memories. Unfortunately I am now a supporter of our great game and rely on clubs to have a decnt variety of food and drinks to keep me coming along and enjoying the games. I don't eat much and I don't drink much - but I do like to find canteens have food and drinks available on request and served with a smile. Granted the Tacos were a great iniative by St Kilda but please don't forget the avid supporters who ask no more than the standard hot dog or dim sims. Gotta have a hot dog when you go to the ball game. I woud never entertain the idea of buying a taco at $6 a pop as I do not have lots of money. A hot dog and a soft drink for $5 would be good value to me.

Did someone say tacos? I wish my club served tacos, I can actually eat those unlike that other crapola on offer (hotdogs, dimmies etc). It's good to have a healthy (ish) alternative for people like me who can't eat traditional canteen food. Will be good not to have to pack my own food for a change!
Oh hang on, my club doesn't play you guys... will have to wait til Port play you again so I have an excuse to come down, I'm sure if I don't watch one of his game's eventually sueridgepipe will kick me out of the family.
