No offence to the people in charge, but surely, there is a younger guy around who could do as good a job as what Justin Charles would. Not taking away the ability of Justin, but wouldnt it be better to look at the future of the team. I am sure some of the other clubs wouldnt be looking at a 40 year old as a roster player...energy, enthusiasm etc, takes you so far. If it happens though, i wish Justin the all the best.. could be the comebeck of the decade...

Fair suck of the sav Phil.
The other Phil has jumped on and provided us with a teaser as to the possible talent that may be on the Aces roster.
He said a few times it was out of his control and that nothing was finalised.
Who knows what JC's role will be - if any.
Maybe they just need a chaperon for that annoying little concrete dog?

Actually, I think he'd be a good addition to the roster.
How many other clubs would have guys on it who played in the old league? An excellent story and one the ABL would be crazy not to acknowledge should JC indeed get a gurnsey. I'll write it up if need be!
For the record, the stats show him as hitting .400 with 3bb and 0k in his recorded games. Certainly not a bad start!

Guys, dont get me wrong..I think with the way he is hitting at the moment ( as you have pointed out Stu ), he would be a welcome addition..my point is that aren't we trying to establish a new league, not re hash an old one and that he has got to be close to 40....If we were to look at stories etc, why not put Adam Silva on the roster...just signed with The Yankees and only 16ish......youth, speed and can cut it with the best of them.....IMHO

Every player will have a story phil, some of course more newsworthy than others.
Put it this way, if Phil (Dale) and Phil (Allen) agree JC is going to help the club win matches and is one of the best hitters they can put on a roster, then get the guy a uniform.

If you really wanted a story you'd have Charles and Silva on the roster.
I would think the roster is big enough to house a veteran or two nigh on retirement, as well as a crop of youngsters.
I would be expecting the Aces to be aiming to put together a roster to win the first season of the new ABL, not to just develop one to win in three or four seasons.

i really dont think that silva is close to the standard of abl yet. he is a young kid with potential but as of now or even next year the kid needs to improve. after watching him in the winter there is alot of work needed in the batters box. who says the kid cant play in the next 2 years but as for now there are alot of better blokes out there for the job. both young and old.

Age is irrelevant. The ABL needs the on-field product.
If a 40-yr old can improve it...get him on the team. The addition of the back story is an added bonus - but not a driver for his addition to the team.
My point - select the team on merit - to make the product, NOW, the best it can be.

Haven't posted for a while, but i'll agree that i wouldn't have thought that age is a detrmining factor in the ABL roster spots. There are plenty of 40+ guys running around in the bigs, so if its good for them, its certainly good for us.
A healthy JC can still swing the stick. The question will be on his mobility and his ability to get around. Maybe Skinny can come back and throw to him, that way we'll know that JC will hit 3 jacks out of 4 at bats!

Great debate guys.....I'm glad it got the discussion fired up..... hope you've all got memberships, they're going fast.......No one is claiming to have a crystal ball when it comes to selection..... did I mention that Early Bird Memberships close on the 26th......players that perform will be given an opportunity to showcase their talents...... did I mention that we're chasing Sydney & the other teams for membership bragging rights.....the strongest team combination will be put on the field each game...... one last mention of memberships......players from the local leagues will be given consideration if they are showing that they could compliment the ACES......so if you would love to see those players on the roster keep us alerted to their progress...... Also I saw roly down the field yesterday and he was practicing his "Macedonian back heel spinning kick to the temple" so get your memberships if you don't want to see him angry!!

I actually think that JC could be a good addition. We need this thing to survive. Forget the future, if this ABL doesn't work, we may lose it. Why risk putting in an untried kid in the first year? I think that the names listed are good and am looking forward to the first game. Hey Phil, what is capacity at the showgrounds? I heard the guys on SEN talking about it today. Lets get them on board and habve them as the number 1 ticket holders or something? they could then promote it as part of their deal???

Forget about Mary McKillop. JC can perform REAL miracles. On shown outings during the winter and thus far this summer, his on-field form has been impressive and his off-field role could be crucial. I’ve no doubt that the Aces have selected the best available squad on form, team balance and winning potential. If it happens that JC is a part of that squad, then expect him also to be a valuable promotional and inspirational tool for the ABL/Aces publicity machine. No player will be selected on sentiment alone, we can be sure of that. Aces playing management are hard-nosed baseball lifers who know what they are about (I seem to recall, last year, that they copped some flak over selection early on, but the Victorian side still went on to win the Claxton Shield). Many MLB and other professional guys play well into their forties or thereabouts. Justin is forty, is playing decent baseball at Summer League level and has as strong a case as plenty of other players for selection. More than that – in a sport that embraces emotion and nostalgia in a context of achievement – his story of dealing with serious physical issues and coming back with such enthusiasm and commitment is an inspiration to us all. I hope he gets a gig (partly - but not just - because he is always so giving of his time in talking about baseball and life). If he does, and if he is not quite up to it, then I’m sure he will be the first to acknowledge that fact - in the interest of the club and of the game and of the friendships that he holds so dear. If he plays, and he achieves at the level required, then it will be a win/win for all concerned. And in particular for Aussie baseball.

I believe the seating capacity will be just a touch over four thousand.....As for SEN, great idea and I'm sure our front office are covering as much territory as they can. If they are getable, then I'm sure Windsor & his team will get 'em. Keep talking it up guys, get on board...... The good lady wife made me buy her a membership today, if you know how much I hate spending money, especially my own, you will have to agree that it's got to be a penny well spent. Couple of weeks to the league opening day and 3 weeks for the Aces Hope to see a sea of fans when we do get to the Showgrounds for our home opener.

Not yet for me. I haven't got any receipt or e-mail confirming my season membership that I purchased over the phone directly with Aces staff. I'll be calling them Monday.
