Just a quick wrap up of the DBA A Grade. The Competition had a mixed round with two games getting a result and two games getting washed away. The first game to get a result Mornington 11 getting over Dingley 6 in blustery conditions. The second game to get a result was Boneo 9 getting the better of Bonbeach 6. The other games, Chelsea in the first foray into A grade for twenty years got a a start against Cheltenham but finished up washed out midway through the first innings and down at the Patch, the Umpires made sure there was no start by calling off the game between Frankston and Dandenong at 1.30pm. Berwick had the bye for this round.

Round Two in DBA land hits off this week hopefully with a full round. First up is Bonbeach travelling to Berwick who had the bye first up. Berwick looks to stabilised their side from last year while Bonbeach will be missing John Halse who is off to the Military. Bonbeach will be competitive early but Berwick should be too strong in the end and run out comfortable winners. Dandenong enjoyed the Frankston hospitality last week and will be itching to play where they travel to Boneo. Not always an easy trip. Boneo will suprise a few people this year, but not this weekend, Dandy will look to jump start their season in style with a win. Mornington travel to Cheltenham this week looking for a second win to start the season while Cheltenham will be looking for win to get their season under away after a washout last week. I am looking at Cheltenham with their very young side to actually suprise Mornington and take the chocolates. In the last game the newbies Chelsea travel to the Patch in what is ineffect the first games of the season for these two side after both having a washout. Frankston with their new look line up will be eager to open their account while Chelsea will be looking to keep testing the waters with their return to A Grade. Frankston with their younger looking side will be too strong for the Chelsea outfit and will get out hit that will be the difference. Frankston to win. Dingley has the bye this week. Good hunting. Waverley beat my Penguins 4 to 2 today. Turner and Evans pitched great for the Black Cats. A 2 run homerun in the 7th from their 3rd baseman proved to be the difference. Matty Wilson was awesome on the hill for the Penguins only giving up the 1 run. Ben Leslie was the best hitter today hitting the ball hard all day including a homerun over centerfield.

A new A Grade entry this season, Newport posted its fourth win from four in Geelong Baseball Association with a thumping 14-4 result over Deakin. Reigning premier Guild downed Bellarine 7-1, while Saints rode one big innings to beat Lara 11-9 and Colac had its first win - 9-6 over Mounties. www.geelongbaseballassociation.com.au/

Heavy scoring in the GBA this week, with 53 runs scored for in A Grade - yet only ONE against over all four games.Guild and Newport remain unbeaten after five with wins over Colac and Lara respectively, while Bellarine blanked Saints and Deakin did the same against Mounties. All of that aside, there is much excitement and a definite sense of anticipation down Sleepy Hollow way with the news that Geelong is a serious contender to host the likely Korean team to be playing in the ABL from the start of next season. www.geelongbaseballassociation.com.au/

Heathmont went down 12 to 4 against Nth Balwyn today. Sam Gibbons was great on the hill going 5 2/3 innings for 2 runs. We conceded 10 runs getting the last 4 outs. Mitch Kennedy and Matt Zeblan did a great job on the hill for the Stingers. We controlled the game for the 1st hour and a half but couldn’t finish it off. Home runs to Ross Hunter, Cooper Goodman and Mitch Edwards. And a home run to Darryl George.
A Res won by Heathmont 19 to 1.

Sorry about not putting a preview for the third round. Went on a Canberra joint with the GLW and friends(not mine). What a round of baseball was had in the DBA for round three. First up we had Dandenong playing Bonbeach, what was thought to be a close contest early blew out pretty quick for an Angels win of 16 to nil. Next up we had Dingley taking on Berwick and in a high scoring affair, Dingley out batted the Dodgers to win 14 to 10. Boneo next took on Chelsea who were looking for a much improved performance ran Boneo all the way in a nip and tuck game. Boneo finally prevailed by scoring three runs in the 10th to take the game 7 to 4. And finally in the match of the round for the Jordan Penpraze Memorial Shield Frankston ventured down the highway to take on Mornington. In a game that had everything that you would want to see in a baseball game Frankston prevailed in the end to win 6 to 5. The top four at this stage is as follows Boneo 6 Frankston 5 Cheltenham 5 Dingley 4.
Have a good week.

Round four in DBA land begins this Saturday with Boneo at present ruling the roost on top of the ladder. First up we have Cheltenham travelling to Berwick for what should be an interesting tussle. Berwick play their home turf quite well and should get by Cheltenham in a close one. Dandenong nip off down to Chelsea in what could be an ugly game of something close. Dandenong last week flexed their collective muscle and handed Bonbeach a whooping and will be looking to give Chelsea something of the same. Chelsea showed major improvement last week against Boneo and will have to keep improving. Dandy to win and win comfortably. Bonbeach head down to Mornington looking for a big improvement on last week, but unfortunately run into a smarting Mornington side that narrowly went down to Frankston. Mornington to come out full of running to get the result that is desired. Finally we have Frankston taking a drive down Springy Rd to Dingley. Frankston are up and about at the moment and have had only moderate success against Dingley the last few years. Dindley will once again trot out a youthful side that will account for anybody that gets in their way. In a tight one, Frankston to get up. Boneo this week has the bye. Good luck to everyone this weekend. Boofa

Newport had the better of a top-two clash in Geelong Baseball Association with its 11-4 result over Guild, while third-placed Bellarine amassed six home runs in smashing Colac 20-8. Mounties YC won its first game of the season - a 7-6 result over Lara - and Deakin scored freely in downing Saints 13-2. www.geelongbaseballassociation.com.au/round-four-2018

Round four completed on Saturday saw some expected results, one upset, one cracking game and a result not known at the time of typing. First up Dandenong visited Chelsea where Chelsea put up a spirited effort and pushed Dandenong. The Angels in the end finished up convincing winners 11 to 2. The upset of the round was between BonBeach and Mornington where in a tight tussel all day saw the Bluejays sneak past the Pirates 6 to 5. Well done to the Bluejays for their first win of the season, especially after the drubbing they copped last week. Frankston ventured down Springvale Road to take on the youthful Dingley side lead by Jack Larner. Frankston jumped out early to score 5 in the first two and where then shut down by the young Dingley pitching staff for the rest of the game. Mitch Bowen went six giving up two runs then in the seventh Dingley came back with two runs to make the score 5 to 4. Dingley kept pressing but just couldn't get the tying run across the plate before the game was called for light. The last game will have to come in the stop press as the only score that I heard was part way through game with Berwick 10 and Cheltenham 7(don't quote on this this.) This still leaves Boneo on top of the heap with Frankston second and third and fourth to be determined by the Berwick/Cheltenham result. Till next week, be safe.

My Penguins lost a tough one yesterday when Billy Findlay hit a walk off grand slam to win the game for Ringwood 6 to 4. Sammy Gibbons was outstanding going the complete game on the mound for us. Paps and Andy Jones pitched great for Ringwood. The last 2 weeks we have played great baseball but haven’t been able to close out the game. The A Res was won by the Penguins.

Round Five this week in the DBA land of dreams. Dandenong travel to Berwick this week hoping to keep the winning ball rolling. After two impressive wins in the last two weeks they will be looking for a threepeat. Berwick will need to be very good if they are to have a chance as they have been leaking runs. For me, Dandy to win. Next is the PINK ROUND at BonBeach who take on the visiting Chelsea. Bonbeach proved to be the giant killers with their emphatic win over Mornington while Chelsea are learning every week in the Top grade. This should be an intriguing contest, toss of a coin and Bonbeach get the nod. Get down and support the Pink Round with all funds raised going to Breast Cancer. Mornington head off down the freeway to Boneo in what is shaping up as a season defining game for the Pirates. Losing two close games on the trot will have the Pirates in a mean mood and ready for some Bucanneering. Meanwhile, Boneo has got off to the best start of the A Grade career and will be sorely tested by the Pirates. I will go out on a limb and lean towards the Pirates to sneak in, but the Braves will compete and compete hard. Finally we have the local DERBY between Dingley and Cheltenham. Dingley have been very competitive and hav e been unlucky to drop games, Cheltenham on the other hand isn't showing any real form to guage how they are travelling. I reckon I might lean towards the young guns from Dingley for a result. Frankston this week has the bye. DBA tarining for the Seniors and 23's and 18's start this weekend at Bonbeach at 1.00pm. Let's make it the year of DBAers. Till Monday. Good hitting, Good Pitching and may te Umpires eyes be true.

Just an update for the stop press of the old Sporting Globe. Berwick did defeat Cheltenham 10 to 7. On a lighter note, I would like to thank the Wangaratta Baseball Club for their hospitality last night(Thursday) for the magnificent meal and bevvies. It was good to catch up with Cam (I will leave the motor running) Scott and get the rundown on what is happening in with Baseball in the North East and to see the fantastic facilities that Wang has. It is a credit to all involved with this fine Baseball Club and I can only wish them all the very best for the future and hope that all their plans come to fruition. Once again, thankyou for a splendid night. The food was better than the motel I was staying in at Albury.

Round Five produced a couple of thrilling - albeit chilling - contests in Geelong Baseball Association A Grade competition, where Guild hung on 14-13 over Lara Wildcats and Newport edged out Bellarine 7-6 to remain undefeated. Not so close at Prince of Wales, though, where Saints went on an 18-0 scoring spree over Mounties, while Deakin - at home - was pushed all the way before registering a 7-1 result against Colac Braves. www.geelongbaseballassociation.com.au/round-five-2018

At the completion of Round 5 nothing is becoming any clearer as to who's where in the bear cave. Starting with Dandenong visiting Berwick, the Angels have been flexing their batting muscle and nothing change against Berwick who where convincing out bashed to the tune of 14 to 2 sending out ominous signs that the Angel machine is up and rolling again. Next we have Chelsea nipping down to BonBeach for the Pink Round. An event that was well put on and supported by both Clubs and my very hearty well done to both for making it a magnificent day. Anyway, Chelsea jumped out to a four run lead midway through the game, when the Jays started mounting a comeback with two runs. In the next innings with bases loaded, the old stager Brenny Robinson strolled to the mound and killed the comeback with the three outs. Thats where the scored stayed with Chelseas getting their first win in A grade ball for twenty years, Well done. Final score Chelsea 4 Bonbeach 2. Mext up we have Mornington driving down to Rosebud to take on Boneo. The Pirates vented all their frustrations out on Boneo and outplayed the Brave to the tune of 12 to 2, bring Boneo back to earth in a thud. Finally in what looks to be the game of the day Dingley young guns took on the Cheltenham young guns and in a very close game that went down to the wire, Dingley prevailed 2 to Cheltenham 0. Frankston had the bye this round. This leaves the top four looking like this Frankston 9 Boneo 8 Danedenong 7 Dingley 6 Berwick 6 Cheltenham 5 Mornington 4 Chelsea 3 Bonbeach 2 Well done the winners for this round.

Round 6 in the DBA hopefully will answer some outstanding questions or will the waters just stay muddied for another week. Pack your brollies and gumboots as the weather ain't looking that flash, better pack that jacket as well. First up we have Dingley taking the hike down to Boneo in what should be an intriguing game. Boneo came back to earth with a thud last week with a thrashing from the hands of Mornington. Dingley are an impressive bunch young players that will definately test the mettle of all sides. In a tight game, I might just lean towards Dingley, but I wouldn't be suprised if Boneo saluted. Next up we have Berwick trotting off to Chelsea. The Dolphins picked up their first win last week at the expense of a disappointing Bonbeach, but should find stiffer opposition in the form of Berwick who just keeps rolling along. Chelsea are learning the A Grade ropes quickly but might just struggle against a quality side in Berwick. Berwick to take the choccies. Mornington take on Dandenong at the Angeldome. This will be an exciting game with both sides coming off resounding wins. Both sides should be equal in the hitting department, so it will come down to the defense that will win the game. With that in mind, I might just lean towards the Angels to pick up the win. The last game of round 6 is Frankston trekking off to the Cheltenham area for what will be a close tussle. Over the last few years, these games have been nip and tuck with very little separating the sides. Nothing will change this weekend. The Tomatoes have been playing very consistent baseball all round while the Rustlers form has been a bit patchy and purely on that basis, I tip Frankston to win again in a close one. BonBeach have the bye this round. SWC for the Seniors isn't far away. Let's get behind all the Associations to make this Carnival what it is, the showpiece of Winter Baseball and not the waste of time that BV thinks it is. Let's stick it up them and show that Winter Ball is alive and well and strongly kicking. Have a good weekend of Baseball. Boofa
