Went over to Chelt this arvo and watched Chelt V Geelong in Div 1 Reserves which Geelong won and was told Chelt (finished top) is now out, I don't know what rock I have been living under but what happened to the Page finals system ? I was then informed that state junior finals are also knockout finals, I ask the question again WTF happened to the Page system ? We are still in February even under my rock.

Thanks KC, more and more things are passing me by these days.
Like the best of three system for Div 1 & 2 Firsts and I think the Page system for comps with final four is the fairest way as against straight knockout.

I strongly agree Fuzzy that it is a travesty that they do not use the page system. A team could go undefeated all season and be many games ahead of the competition but it counts for nothing. Yes they get to play the 4th team but in most competitions there is little difference between 1st and 4th. Anybody can have one bad day. They deserve the double chance for their efforts. I call on all clubs to force BV to change the current finals system.

I do remember Nathan's reasoning for bringing the 2 week system in. It allows the whole competition to play one extra round, on prelim final day only 2 teams play. If you take the argument that "anybody can have a bad day", then what happens if that undefeated team loses the Grand Final? Play another? That said, why are 3rd Div and Women playing a page system?

The finals travesty goes beyond the playing side of things. A crowd of 150 plus attended the Chelt vs Geelong Div.1 reserves game. After the 2 Div.4 games were finished at the complex, the attendance grew even more. The club did well with canteen and bar sales.....Thanks Fuzzy....but less finals action means clubs miss out on added revenue. Tell me any club that doesn't rely on these funds to support the bottom line. All valid points 're the decency of ladder position at the end of the home and away season , and any just rewards, but the social aspect with financial benefits have been given minimal consideration. On a slightly different topic....what happens if there's a draw in the masters finals? We drew with Berwick last night, and we're not sure what's to happen. There's nothing in the rules. Both teams were thinking the team higher on the ladder, or with the head to head, would go thru. But pep heard from someone that a masters final was replayed on a Thursday night....over one inning. Surely not?

Wyatt, the score in finals game 2 at Geelong last night was tied 6/6 after regular time. They played a sudden death inning with the last batter out starting on 2nd. Deakin won 7/6 over Guild.

Two cents worth again. The page system was faultless and it did allow a bad day if you finished top two. Once again BV/VSBL have managed to screw up another perfect system that was fool proof. To finish top two you have earnt the right to a double chance not a knockout chance. I think it time for the so called powers to be to readdress the situation and find a system that is fair and respectable and compliant to all concerned. We can harp on this until the cows come home, but it is up to the clubs to say something and then vote on it and not be a bunch of sheep and just follow a few self interested people. The bigger picture has got to be looked at and address in all fairness.

It was getting dangerously dark last night when the ump called time. He said going to that inning it would be the last as he was struggling to see it. So I have no idea what's to happen.

As the coach of the 2nds for Cheltenham, we knew the finals format going into the season. We were just beaten by a better team on the day. It was a great game and all credit to Geelong. But i would like to see the top 2 teams get a double chance week 1 of the finals from now on. I would also like for the finals games in the 2nds to be a 7 innings. Why do we go from a 2 hour game (usually 6 or 7 innings) all season to a 9 inning game in finals? To me that is a big jump. Good luck to Essendon and Geelong in the grand final.

Wyatt, Last season when Bonbeach and Cheltenham were tied in the bottom of 8th and light ran out, the teams returned to play the remaining innings to obtain a result on the Thursday of the same week. The Masters playing conditions put the decision in the hands of the competition coordinator as what happens next. The fairest thing to do is to play on and finish the game particularly if it was called due to bad light. obviously the time would have been recorded and you may well have 20 minutes of baseball to play before official time is up. Not sure when you finished though? If still a draw after official time, the rule clearly states to play on until you obtain an even innings result. It sounds like you all reached a gentleman's agreement last night with regard to who went to play in the Grand Final and I suspect that will be taken into consideration by Baseball Vic, but don't be surprised if you have all front up Thursday night to play again. We do after all play be their rules and we agree to those rules at the seasons start. As Matty says above, tough to be knocked out after finishing on top, but he knew it could happen. Good luck!
Tim Hanson.

Spoken to Jess in the office and she's uncertain as to what has to happen. But we weren't far off the time anyway....but only 5 innings played. What concerns me is the ability to come up, after 3 sleeps, then to play possibly 3 games in 5 days....tough on some old bodies. Wait and see I guess
