Just having a glance at the Division One and Two stats and I was interested by the relative numbers of home runs being hit.
According to the stats (which might be a couple of weeks old), eleven Divvy One bombs have been hit by Cheltenham, ten by Blackburn and eight by Melbourne.
Only one for the season by Doncaster and Waverley.
In Division Two, Moorabbin leads the way with nine, followed by St Kilda and Chelsea both on six. Interestingly enough, all are in the middle to lower group on the ladder at present.
While these numbers might tell us something about the relative hitting power of particular clubs, they do not tell us where the home runs were hit, or under what circumstances.
Do we have any hitter-friendly parks? If so, which ones? Is there any evidence for suggesting where balls are more likely to sail out (someone might like to go back over match details for the season to determine this)?

KC, what a great thread.
With one game to go out at the short porch at Waverley, there has been at total of one home run hit this year.
Schroeders from Upwey hit it back in the round 3 off Lee Hogan.
The Old Dog was never the same after that, so we moved him on to the Redcliffe Padres where he is getting his confidence back inn by inn.
Having played at Blackburn twice this year, from memory, I have seen three sail over the fences.
My guess the toughest yards to hit them out in Div. 1 would be Upwey and Preston
Cheers KC.

I seem to remember two home runs being hit that day titta. But even still, two home runs for the year should be a credit to your pitching staff.

Good point Greg. Dingers would put four plus out at any park a season so stats may be a little misleading re whether it was a home or away game. We all know what they say about statistics...
Methinks the hitters have more to say than the grounds. If they did a winter analysis Research would win hands down with personnel and ground!

What would be interesting would be differ between left handers and right handers in who has hit the yards. Looking at a lot of the grounds, right field seems to be the launching pad .

I went thru the old reports and you are right Greg, now if i was a betting man I would have to say it was the Cheese guy that hit the other one cause he hit the ball pretty sharp that day.
If you are an Upwey fan/player, how many hit there this year in Div 1?

He has hit 5 HRs, breaking them down, shows that 4 were hit at Cheltenham and I as home team at Altona.

I'm pretty sure we have 5 guys who have hit jacks this year, schroeders and Cheesman at waverley, Harman at altona, swanton at Blackburn, and Ayres at sunshine. We haven't hit any at home but we may have given up 1 or 2 at home. I remember an opposition player hitting one straight away centre, that takes a bit. Blackburn seems to be the highest amount of home runs per game but have a look at the guys swinging

Ask JohnE how far he hit one of my fastballs at Blackburn..... it short-hopped the house fence in rightfield (yes, opposite field).
A quick measure on Google Earth (awesome little tool to measure HR's) has it as 429 feet.
Did I mention it was opposite field?

Now don't be too down on yourself, Chardy. I seem to recall, after you withdrew from the contest (with sunburn on the roof of the mouth), that JohnE made it a hatrick for the arvo with another two bombs off Lee Hogan.

God that Lee Hogan can give up some bombs, that's 3 and this thread has only been going for a week!!!

I am sure you're right as a shot like that you wouldn't forget who it was off!!rossco didn't give up many either!
I remember and i am pretty sure it was my first yr at Malvern, someone from Waverly hit the side of the Monash! Comment was, "did I hit that ok." Coach said "if it was a rolled up pair of socks it would've gone out!"

Don't know about "friendly" but I seem to remember seeing Matt Gourlay blasting one over centre field at Cheltenham without a following breeze. Slightly off topic but I also saw him absolutly hose a home plate runner from fence line centre field with one of the best throws I've ever seen.

I found this in the archive. JohnE's first bomb (opposite field, off Chardy) mentioned in previous messages about that particular game at Billabong Park late in 2008. Check out the catcher and umpire following the missile in flight. Thanks to John Punshon for capturing the image.

WOW...classic
A couple of big hits at the old Preston ground stopped everyone in their tracks. Richard Tucker, huge ex MLB using tin, the old green big barrel easton, shot it though the middle of the big Oak tree about 30 feet behind CF and scatted all the birds out of it, one of many for the big man. Many loved the short RF fence and many balls landed in the Merri Creek, one of the biggest i saw down that RF fence was when Gerard Cooper launched one that actually hit one the power lines behind the club rooms and bounced back in to RF. they'd be about 100 feet high.
