The time has come again for another crack at match predictions for the DBA Berwick v Mornington After the heartbreaker last week Berwick head back home. This could be an interesting game, Mornington will be pesky but Berwick have to much to play for. Berwick by 4 runs Bonbeach V Frankston An interesting game this one, the young Bluejays put up a good effort against Chelt last week and if keep the intensity up should run the Tomatoes in a tight game. This could come down to who bats best. A toss of the coin and Frankston by 1 run, but look for an upset. Cheltenham V Dandenong. Chelt is travelling nicely and just fine tuning their game. If Dandy is to seriously challenge for th pennant seasonason, this could be their defining game. If you have nothing to do on saturday, head down and watch this game as it will be an absolute corker. Chelt by 2 or 3 runs in a tight one.
B. Grade Boneo v OGH. OGH had a rare win last week, but travelling to Boneo is always a bit of a long haul. Boneo should win this one by 7 to 10 runs comfortably. Dandy v Chelsea. Dandy with experience and youth are travelling with a smile on the dial and should hold too many guns for Chelsea who are struggling with consistency at the batting box. Dandy by 6 runs. Dingley v Oakleigh This should be a close game with not much between the two sides. It will be a case of youth versus age. In this case i feel youth will prevail. Dingley by 3 runs. Pakenham v Moorabbin The game of the round in B grade this week. Both teams hit well, but I feel that pitching from both sides is a bit light on. Having said that, the Pumas at home are a tough gig and should get over the Panthers. This should be a claw biting game with the Pumas by 1 or 2 runs.
Have a good weekend and may the predicted rain stay away . Good hunting and may you all be winners.

Four weeks to go, still a number of teams fighting for a place in the finals.
A Grade There is now a small gap between the top 3 teams and the rest, and three sides in the hunt for the fourth spot. Not saying that the top three are certainties to stay in those positions, but I would much rather be them than sitting in fourth atm. After this weekend I will give a prediction of the top four and the relegation zone.
Croydon vs GMBC - Monty to continue their good from and after this game should find themselves in the top four. I think they are dangerous, but maintain that I don't 'fear' them as much as I used to and I think other sides don't either. Croydon have a game and a half buffer from bottom place, they will need it too as they have tough games to come.
Knox vs Research - MATCH OF THE ROUND - Has to be MOTR, this has by far the most riding on it. If Knox lose, they will not be in fourth place. Research are good enough to get to whichever pitcher Knox throw at them and also have a handy roster themselves. Knox have not quite fired and will likely just miss the finals which will be a shock to them and many who predicted they could be a chance of winning the whole thing this year. Another game where the long ball may come into play and if either pitcher has a day out, they other should win in a canter. Look for a very close game though with Research coming through with the goods.
Melbourne University vs Heathmont - Heathmont are also moving nicely atm with good wins against Monty and Greens in the last three weeks. A loss last week to the ladder leaders will have them hungry for this game. Melb Uni need to win two more games to avoid relegation, I don't think this is one of them.
Ringwood vs North Balwyn - This is a danger game for Ring as they seem to find NB tough. NB are also in the situation that they need to win another game at least (next week prob). Ring simply must win this game to show the league that they are a chance for the premiership. I would think that Ring will win and virtually cement their spot in the finals.
Watsonia vs Greensborough - Watsonia have given up the least runs this season which is a little bit of a surprise to me at this stage of the season. Greens sitting in 7th position is also a surprise. I have to think that Greens will get this game, they have the hitting to pick off Watsonia. A loss for Watsonia will put an end to their finals chances a win will keep their slim chance alive.
B Grade After the results from last round, there has been a change to fourth place on the ladder and funnily enough the two teams which changed positions play each other this week in a winner takes all game.
Bundoora vs Waverley - After their win last week against Ring last week, virtually ensuring their finals place and maybe knocking out a team from the finals race, Waverley should win comfortably. Bundoora are sitting second last, they would have expected to win more games this season, especially win the inclusion of to to perceived weaker sides. This is a game that Waverley should win, but it is also a game that Bundoora could shock and win. If Waverley win, they could take 2nd spot, although Rebels should also win.
Essendon vs La Trobe University - Essendon struggle. They leak runs and find it hard to score. La Trobe though have not set the world on fire and I wonder how much drive they have after having points taken away from them. They are languishing in 7th place and are unlikely to get any higher. Essendon may have more to play for. A win could get them a spot in next year's B Grade comp, while a loss could make the league think twice before allowing it.
Forest Hill vs Ringwood - MATCH OF THE ROUND - Has to be MOTR because the loser here will find it very difficult to win their way back into the top four and will have to rely on the other team losing a game to get close. FH have the advantage with a superior percentage, so Ring must win this game. Looking at the teams from each website, John named to start against Meldrum, this could be a pitchers duel. FH with the likes of Hayes, Bertrand and O'Malley look like they may have the edge, but Ring have a couple of interesting 'ins' in Barrett and Oxworth and may have the fire power to get to John early. I think that if John can stay on the hill, FH win, if Ring knock him off early, Ring win. great game at this stage of the season.
Monash University vs Westgarth - Garth to continue on their 'Merry Park' way this week. Monash are going to finish around the same mark as last year. They can't make the finals and can't finish much lower. Garth, however, are looking like they belong in a higher grade, I hope that if they get up they are able to compete in A Grade and stay up for a few years at least.
North Coburg Rebels vs St. Kilda - Rebels to get back at a St Kilda side which knocked them off in their first meeting. If St Kilda win, Rebels will be in third place and may not get the double chance. With games against Garth, Wave and Ring to come after this week, they could potentially not win another game for the season, although they should win a couple if they are a serious threat to the flag.
A couple of very big games this week and we should know the make up of the top four in both leagues very soon.
Good luck

I've never been to Melb' Uni's ground at Parkville before, can anyone tell me how it will cope with morning showers/possible rain in the morning? BoM says clearing toward afternoon.

From all reports I would expect it would come up fine.
Speaking with someone that plays with Uni early in the season. They mentioned that since the upgrade works at the ground that the drainage is close to the best in the league.

We beat Forest Hill in a nail biter, 6 - 5 I think the end score was. A bit of controversy in last 10 minutes, we may hear more about this later although I think the protest was put in after the game had finished not when the play happened. Great game for the first hour and 50 minutes though. Our reserves got done.

A couple of crucial match-ups in the GBA this week, with league-leading Lara getting home 3-1 over Ballarat in a ripper. The Brewers cling to fourth, though, as Guild smashed Saints. The Lions move back to second ahead of Deakin (with the bye), while Saints stay in fifth - not yet out of contention if they can win their last two and the Brewers lose to Guild in a fortnight. Bellarine posted its third win of the season with a 13-1 result over winless Bacchus Marsh. Both of those clubs can put Brewers or Saints out of the post-season. www.geelongassociation.baseball.com.au

Berwick swept the Pirates in all A grade games and the B3 beat Bonbeach. Good to have seen a couple of lads from the Aces Hangar make their pitching debuts in the B3 team over the past couple of games. Both threw a scoreless innings each.
On the positive, someone in our team got through half an innings on their return from a hamstring injury. Just a pity they didn't get thru the other half of the innings.
Back to the DL...

TJ, Whats your predictions for the final 5 in A grade. Looks to me that if the Boros beat Ringwood they will get in at Knox's expense (unless Knox can surprise Heathmont) Ringwood may lose all 3 and just hang in there Top 2 won't change, Monty could finish 3rd

Dandy and Chelt fought out draws in both A1 and A2 on Sat, tight games throughout.
A1 game had a 45 min delay after a hard play at home plate. It was a fair play but JJ got full force of runner on left shoulder. He wasnt moving anywhere, so the ambos had to be waited for.
Anybody got an update on his condition?

Mondays Wrap. What a corker the Dandy/Chelt game was. Nothing in it all day. What came out if was Dandy's ability to match anything that going around in the league. A good sign with the finals coming up. Chelt still needs a bit of fine tuning. Watch out everybody. Berwick still in the hunt, but a lot of work to be done over the next three weeks. And Frankston still hanging there in fourth spot.
In B grade. The upset of all upsets, the Travelling Wilburies getting over Boneo at Boneo is huge, keep that form up and a few more upsets could be in the wind. Dandy for is the real smokey for the flag, easily accounting for Chelsea who will be looking forward to putting this season behind them. A nice draw down Pakky way jeeps the ladder still of interest. Moorabbin must keep winning to keep the young guns of Dingley at bay who if they keep winning could just sneak in if the Panthers slip up in way.
All in all, a pretty good round of Baseball. The fours for both A & B grades are still open. Bring on the best rounds of Baseball in the last three weeks.

Heard a funny story from Bendigo game yesterday. Runner called out at second for a force out. Runner complained, umpire said 'the ball beat you there', runner agreed but said 'I was the hitter'. For the record Falcons beat East 6 zip to keep top spot. Sheldon Christie threw 4 hitter for Falcons (3 of to said runner) Should be a cracking finals series.

If the same play I'm thinking of the situation was a little different. He was called out on a tag play and appealed saying "Im in there", with the umpire replying "you tag beat you'. Either way it was an interesting game, with some great defense played by both teams. In the other game Dodgers were finally able to overcome Scots, with the score being 4-1. Scots have been a great improver over the secnd half of the year and will no doubt look to finish the season on a high against East next week.

The only thing probably missing was a tag. But let's not let details get in the way of a good story. Waiting to see if Janet can work it out. Have the finals venues been announced yet bushman.

The tag was pretty obvious, I should know hahaha, but anyways. From what I have been told, A & B grade finals on Scots diamond, C grade on Falcons, not sure about C grade grand final tho, if it is to be played on Scots diamond before the B grade.

Excellent call by OldManRiver for the B1 Dingley v Oakleigh game. 3 runs was the margin in the end. A very good, tight game that see-sawed all the way through.
2 things that did come out of the game that wasn't in the spirit of the game did come out of it though.
The first one, and this is my pet hate and would love to see it outlawed, was the old hide the ball at 1st while the pitcher walks around the mound trick. I hate that play, especially when used to try to deceive under 17's. I know that there is no rule against this, and people may shout me down for saying it, but I just don't think it is in the spirit of the game.
The second was a balk that wasn't called. The plate umpire was a club umpire, not an official, and it was missed in the heat of the battle. I am not one for being able to pick up balks at the best of times, and I know that even official umpires miss them or get them wrong. There was jumping up and down about it, which I also don't mind, but then it was continued with during the shaking of hands, which I thought was uncalled for, and resulted in the umpire not being paid - for 1 missed call (and a balk of all things). Things were said at the time which I am sure all parties would like to do over, but I found this to be very disappointing. Jump up and down about it at the time, even discuss it over a drink afterwards, but don't continue it while saying well done and thanks for the game with the opposition. I found this to be in very poor form and those involved have been around long enough to know better.
Just my opinion. Happy for people to disagree with me, but I just don't like it.

Being the kind spirited person that I am without a mean bone in my ageing body, I think, but could be wrong, but I think the hidden ball trick was outlawed some years ago or was deemed not to be in the spirit of the game. It might be one for Goodo to answer. As for non payment, just refer that matter to the Secretary of the DBA who should follow that up for you. I wish the best of luck to your young charges JC for the rest of the season.

OMRiver I also thought the "hidden ball" play had been outlawed, but found out last season that it is still legal..no rule or playing condition has been changed. Two other points:If I was the club umpire I would have given the out and then told the offensive (in both senses of the word) manager what I thought of it. A solo umpire has enough to do without looking out for ( at some distance) that sort of stuff. 2. What was the base coach doing? It really is his responsibility to protect his runner. I was out to this play many years ago, and never ever left a base again without knowing where the ball was. A harsh lesson, but one never forgotten.

Well eck, it should really comeback to never taking your eye off the ball. Always know where the ball is. And probably should sack the base coach for being asleep and give a brohaha to Oakleigh for trying to pull such a low stunt.

Great game for the first hour and 50 minutes though. Our reserves got done. A protest was lodged, but our coach neglected to say to the umpire that he had done so. This might be due to the umpire being completely unapproachable at the time. The umpire did not follow match day procedure and refused to explain what he saw and the rule he applied. Apparently what was written in the scorebook did not comply either. The league has agreed that our protest has merit & would have been upheld, but these small technicalities mean they will not hear it. The penant committee has discretionary powers, but they believe it is better for our coach to learn how to lodge a protest than uphold the laws that have impacted on the result of a game. I believe this is a poor result all around.

A few weeks ago I fielded a throw from the outfield and took it back to the pitcher and was walking back to first base. The runner was chatting to his first base coach and then frantically got back to the base as he thought I had the ball. Fair to say the thought of trying the hidden ball trick had never entered my mind.
Last and only time I have ever seen it tried was in my first ever baseball game just over a decade ago and I was on the receiving end following my first ever base hit. After it I took a lead and the first baseman went to tag me but the umpire (their club umpire mind you) called time before the tag and told the first baseman to pull his head in.

What part of the spirit of the game is the hidden ball trick not in? A baseball game contains many acts of deception, the pitcher deceiving the hitter, the hitter deceiving the fielders, the pitcher deceiving the runners, the runners deceiving the pitcher, the fielders deceiving the runners, etc. Why is it worse for the first baseman to mime the returning of the ball to the pitcher than for a runner to steal on an inattentive pitcher who temporarily forgets about his runners, for example? Both plays involve a player behaving as if the ball was not live when it was live or failing to notice the state of play at any given moment and being vulnerable because of this inattention.

I don't get the problem with it either. Ormond pulled it on us last year but the guy was on the rubber, baulk called. See it all the time in collage games.
And here's why an umpire shouldn't guess....

.....After it I took a lead and the first baseman went to tag me but the umpire (their club umpire mind you) called time before the tag and told the first baseman to pull his head in. Can you image what a joke this game would become if this became an acceptable tactic (and even rehea***d at training) - it would slow the game down and turn it into a magic show - mulitple pick off attempts are annoying enough - lets not encourage this practice please.
