Actually KC, time doesn't fly when you've gotta sit out in the MWBL lower grades on a beautiful day like last Sat because of the silly bye for school holidays. The other comps that play don't have mass forfeits ... why is the MWBL different??? And it's still school holidays this weekend ... why doesn't the MWBL take this Saturday off as well? 7 grades out of 11 not playing because 20% of players might be out of town ... ridiculous.

FWIW genghis Ive never liked this either, and so close to the long weekend break as well albeit that we were lucky and played last weekend. If lots of clubs had trouble fielding teams then fair enough but is this the case MWBLPres ? If a few clubs might have had a player or two missing in the lower grades due to the Junior Champs perhaps there could be an understanding on this weekend that opposition teams in the lower grades agree to not count the a blank (or two) as an out if the absence if Junior Champs related ?

It does amaze me that senior any sport would have time off for the school holidays. I do know that the DBA schedule junior games off when there is a carnival on that paticular weekend, but having games called off for school holidays just doesn't cut it in senior baseball. Looking forward to the drive down the highway this weekend. Not sure whether to bring the snow skis or the water skis. Only time will tell.

While it is not good form for any league to be critical of another for the decisions it takes, I must say that the reasoning for the week off escapes me - especially the lower grades in my old MWBL, the flagship of Australian winter baseball.
School holidays alone could surely not have been the only reason for calling seniors off, so I'm guessing that the Under 12 and Under 18 Carnivals were considerations. But apart from maybe a couple of coaches, Under 12 squads would not have been involved in seniors anyhow. In Under 18s, yes, one two, even three or four players might have been missing from any particular club. If those players were good enough to get into the Carnival team, it's fair to suppose that they would normally have been firsts or seconds players - not players from the lower grades, the ones that were given the week off.
In an already short winter season, I have my doubts even about cancelling junior games for mid-winter holidays (except maybe where they coincide with an under-aged championship).
For seniors, no. Geelong, for example, went ahead with its normal senior scheduling without any forfeits or other apparent issues.

So, if it's 1's and 2's players missing, where do u replace them from? Aside from that, its an unfair assumption that rep players are all from the higher grades.
And if you have kids away playing, isn't it possible to have parents (who maybe play) want to watch?
Then parents and kids going away for the middle weekend... etc
It maybe not the ideal situation, but in a league with such a reliance and indeed desire to involve juniors, it is the fairest.
Maybe the next question should be whether the senior league should have juniors playing in it?

Some pretty ordinary conditions coming up. With how close the ladders are dare I say but a washout for some teams may be enough for them this week.
A Grade 8 Teams are within 2 games of the top 4, melb uni is 2 and a half games out of the top 4. It is close! Some very important games over the next few weeks, this week is no exception.
GMBC vs Heathmont - MATCH OF THE ROUND - Monty are coming. They giving up the least runs per game in the comp (yes it is close) and are scoring runs again. A loss to Research last week will hurt them, so look for the 'big' boys to come out firing. Heathmont with a close game last week, but doing enough to stay on top of most teams. They have a line up that can hit, if they can keep Monty to 2 or less runs, they may run over the top here.
Greensborough vs Research - Greens got done by a boosted Melb Uni last week, a loss here will hurt their finals chances. How do we pick against Research though, they have only lost 2 games to the other top three teams in Heathmont and Ringwood, so I think Greens may be up against it this week. Research have simply got too many guns IMO and are still a huge chance to take out the whole thing.
Melbourne University vs Croydon - This is almost MOTR as the winner gives themselves a bit of a break from the dreaded 'relegation zone'. Croydon need another solid outing by Berka (if he is pitching) and Uni will be hoping that their good hitting form continues. A win for Croydon would keep their slim finals chances alive. I pick Croydon based on how they have been traveling for most of the season, unlucky to lose where as Melb uni are relying on the returning players a bit too much I think. We will have to keep a close eye on the 'relegation zone' over the next few weeks. Uni play the top three teams in the next three weeks, while Croydon's draw is not quite as tough (but still hard).
North Balwyn vs Knox - Smart money on Knox, but they are not playing he best ball ATM. NB should not be a game clear on the bottom, but have not been able to deliver on promise. If I were them I would wheel out A Mann (not any man, but Andy), tell him to go at Knox and hope the hitters are able to score a few runs. If Andy has a day out, 1 or 2 runs would win the game. Hussey got shaken up last week, do the start Taylor(?) he is named on the bench. I still predict Knox by 6, but hopefully NB can get their collective 'game' together over the next few weeks. If NB win this, they have a chance to win 2 out of their next 3 and move themselves further up the ladder.
Ringwood vs Watsonia - Ringwood have been playing pretty good ball recently with wins against the two of the top four and a draw against the other team in the four. Their hitting lineup is looking good. Watsonia are sitting in a dangerous position, not quite clear enough of the relegation zone, but still a chance of pinching a finals spot. I don't think that they will take a finals spot, but they should win enough over the remaining games to keep 'safe'. Watsonia look to be outgunned tomorrow.
B Grade 1 thing is for sure, this season finals spots will be close. With La Trobe losing match points for their first 2 games, the top 5 are now extremely close and it would be difficult for any other side to seriously challenge for the finals. Some very important games this week with four of the top five teams playing each other. The top four will change this week IMO. Essendon vs Monash University - Not sure that the whole Essendon thing is working, but what would happen if........ McIntyre throws, Monash take the game lightly etc. I pick Monash because they 'should' win, but I think that this is a danger game for Monash. If Monash lose this game, they can kiss finals goodbye. If Essendon win, they look likely to finish above two, maybe three other B Grade sides which would be an achievement. A few boys back for Uni, should keep them in the 'Hunt'.
Forest Hill vs North Coburg Rebels - Can I pick a washout? FH's ground does not cope with water, a draw would help them somewhat. Last time these two sides played they fought out a tough 1 - 1 draw. So how do you separate these teams who have the exact same records? The have both scored virtually the same amount of runs, however, Rebels have given up a lot less. So I pick Masa to get the start and keep Rebels in the top four. For FH to make finals, the need to win this game and show their intent on making it back to A Grade.
La Trobe University vs Bundoora - La Trobe Uni should win this one, with Freeth or Jones on the hill. A big mistake has been dearly paid for, their finals chances are all but gone, they do not deserve to be sitting down the bottom of the ladder though. Bundoora started the season fairly well with two early wins, these wins were against the two bottom sides though in St Kilda and Essendon. They are capable of taking on any team on their day, and have a good chance tomorrow. St. Kilda vs Ringwood - Ringwood are starting to show some form and seem to have a strong side in. St Kilda are still a bit of an unknown, only 1 win, but that was against Rebels. Ringwood seem to have the lucky draw this week and should find themselves in the top four after tomorrow. A big win could see them sit 2nd but it would have to be BIG.
Westgarth vs Waverley - MATCH OF THE ROUND - May not pick against Garth for the rest of the season, they are going well. Waverley are dangerous and if they make the finals, they could come up with a few good games to challenge for the A Grade promotion. I think they are lacking a couple of top line players though. Garth could be interesting next season should they make A Grade. Their kids will be better than Waverley's kids tomorrow.
Some potentially excellent games of ball tomorrow, don't forget to rug up. Good luck to the scorers again, tough day for them.

The way I read the weather report it seems rain coming in from the west mid arvo at this stage so maybe Eastern suburbs games are more likely to get a result TJ ?

Source - www.bom.gov.au/vic/forecasts/melbourne.shtmlMelbourne area Partly cloudy. Isolated showers during the morning. Showers increasing during the afternoon and evening. The chance of thunderstorms during the afternoon with possible hail. Winds north to northwesterly up to 30 km/h becoming northwesterly up to 40 km/h during the morning then shifting west to southwesterly at night Doesn't look too good, would want to be in front at 65 mins I think.

We got over St Kilda 5 - 1 in a 9 inning game. 1 nil down for the first 5 or 6 innings. Tough conditions to hit in with the sun in your eyes. So much for the hail. Our reserves got up as well

NC Rebels 12-8 Vs F/Hill in B Grade today. Both sides were undermanned missing key players and then both sides lost key players mid game but the Rebels covered the gaps left in the line-up better I guess and were too good on the day. NC Rebels also got up 5-3 in the Ressies.
I left at 12-3 with the bottom of the last to go so F/Hill must have rallied and put 5 across late.

Bloody cold for the only A Grade game in the GBA today - surprisingly enough in Ballarat, where Deakin came from a deficit to pinch the game 6-5 from Brewers. Massive game at Lara on Sunday, when the Wildcats host Saints, while Bellarine is at home to Guild. Bacchus Marsh has the A Grade bye. www.geelongassociation.baseball.com.au

Heathmont 12- GMBC 6 and Research also scored 12 runs to defeat Greensborough 3. Heathmont and Research starting to pull away from the rest of the field whilst only being separated by 1/2 a game.

Just wondering if anyone knows how the North Coburg Catcher pulled up after he fell awkwardly on his ankle/leg in the first inning of B Grade game against FHBC.
I think the Ambulance came from Bendigo because it took well over 1.5 Hours!

Sunday games in the GBA resulted in Lara winning 7-1 over Saints and Guild doing just enough to hold off Bellarine 4-2. At this stage, Lara appears odds-on to finish on top and Guild will be favoured for the double-chance. There is real interest in a three-way go between Deakin, Brewers and Saints for the other two play-off berths. www.geelongassociation.baseball.com.au

That could be the retirement call for Cam. Been a very good player for a long time. I believe Falcons got beaten in Bendigo for the second week in a row - whats happened Bushman? Ranga back for first game after sillyball injury.

Unlike you Authentic, I limit my 'running' around to masters tournies. I think if I had an injury like that I would just about call time.

What a strange weather weekend, sunshine, wind and rain and not a minute lost. My congratulations to the Pakky Committee for a wonderful day of baseball and hospitality. Suppose to have a bus ride that turned into a car pool. Well done to the Pakky crew on the main diamond. It looks magnificent.

Thanks Marshy :-)
Just one last comment re the NC Rebels / F/Hill B grade game on Saturday.
In a game that meant a lot to both sides it was great to see the spirit in which it was played albeit a bit of a blow out early.
The F/Hill crowd applauded Cam off the ground, and later Dave helped Ewan from the ground after he injured himself (how is he by the way?). Then there was the F/H guy that rang the ambo's and waited (and waited !!!!) for them to arrive for Cam. Even the lady in the Canteen who was keen to shell out the frozen peas (with or without gravy) to a few of us during the day as well.
I know our club very much appreciates all you did on Saturday over there guys, it just shows that teams can be fiercely competitive on the diamond but still have respect for the game and their competitors along the way.

Sorry for the late reply regarding the week off, better late than never I suppose. This does come up every year when we do the fixture as to whether we should play through. The overwhelming response we receive from our clubs (delegates) is to keep the bye. Does it effect clubs - I can only tell you from my own clubs experience that, yes it does as far as playing numbers are concerned. As well, we have 2 junior champs on that weekend, and it is in the middle of school holidays at a time when people taking off for a holiday tend to be away. I suppose it is a little bit chicken and egg. Because we run the bye, does that instill the mindset for players to take the week off, or are many players actually unavailable at this time. One other positive that I see is that for A grade and B grade clubs, it allows players who may not get the opportunity to watch their 1sts and 2nds during the year play. So, my suggestion for players not happy with missing the weekend is to let your clubs know that you want the weekends games restored in lower grades and we will fixture them back in. If the vast majority of clubs agree to have the games scheduled, then it will be done.
