As a dedicated listener of ESPN's Baseball Today, one popular topic of discussion recently is various teams Mt Rushmore's. The four guys face's your club would carve into a mountain. Some are pretty obvious, others not so. As an example the Yankees Mt Rushmore is commonly accepted as Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio and Mantle. It would be interesting, I think, if forum members would like to chip in with their opinions.
Since the powerhouse's always provide more food for thought, what do people think of Waverley's Mt Rushmore consisting of Dale, Clarkson, M Sheldon-Collins and Russell. Special mention to Richard Sisson.
What's yours?

Moorabbin's would be a choice between kernick, Simpson, Douglas, breen, porter and dewar I would reckon. No kettle? Seem to be some selective memories out there. Are we talking on field or total contribution in which case clarkson snr might get a face before Titta - just to use as an example. Be interesting to see how many players know the history of their own club and the value they put on the contributions made. I'd like to think the Mt Rushmore heads would be the spiritual figureheads who represent what each baseball club stands for. Funny how the perpetual trophies at most clubs might get overlooked for what they represent, not to mention life member boards.

As a life member, and a 30 year veteran of a 32 year old club, your right about spiritual figurehead probably having sway. But when most of these guys, in mulgraves case, havent been down the club for quite some time, the legend tends to fade. It's easy to pass judgment on who should or shouldn't be put on a pedestal, but common trends suggest that too much is put on past successes. Mulgrave has won one 1st flag, back in 79-80, the first year, and it was a 4th div flag, with 11 guys only. Some great players among them, a couple who are probably up in the pantheon of the waverley baseball club( Trevor Williamson and Doug Grey), and were major influences on the developement of the club. But does their effort carry the same weight as someone like Nick Lane and Ryan Bergs efforts in taking us from an honest 3rd div club to a club that was one dbl away from being in first div? It's a shame you can only fit 4 heads on the mt, because I'd suggest most clubs would struggle to stop at 4. In saying that, I'm reappraising my first suggestion. It should be Larry,Larry, Larry, Larry, and Larry! There...that's five!

I'm definitely in the one mountain camp Klattsy, although in this case, I think the beholder is free to apply their own parameters. I think this works better based on on-field contributions as cultural influenence is a bit more subjective and far more difficult to measure. Nevertheless, I would also be interested to see peoples thoughts on their clubs spiritual champions.

Fortunately Malvern historian Norm Winfield put together book on "The history of Malvern Baseball Club" (available to buy through the Malvern website = shameless plug). The book has teams of each decade, but the big 4 might almost need to be a generational thing.
Apart from Mal Stuart, I'd have to consult Jack and Norm to find out who else he'd allow on Mt Wadsworth, don't want to upset Jack, he still has a nasty streak.
